What a brave lady.

Whilst I am not an ardent Labour supporter, I completely support you and how you have stood up to the bullying, racism, violence and hatred sent your way.

Sad that your family could not be there to see your victory but under the circumstances you made the right choice.

That this country is allowing this type of intimidation and behaviour - we should be ashamed of ourselves.

Yes good on her, that was awful behaviour from those men, and hearing about what her female campaigners had been through too was shocking.

Labor reaping what they sewed.

EndlessSummer · 05/07/2024 15:05

Yes she is very brave. I wouldn’t want her job.

CrepuscularCritter · 05/07/2024 15:08

She and her team are very strong.

Labor reaping what they sewed.

I think you mean Labour reaping what they sowed. #spellcheckaracist

AllesAusLiebe · 05/07/2024 15:14

Not a Labour supporter, but I'd much rather she was parachuted in as a replacement for the awful Angela Rayner.

mrshoho · 05/07/2024 15:17

She did well and I admire her bravery. I worry for the future.

Why is Angela Rayner 'awful'?

MauveCrow · 05/07/2024 15:22

I have zero sympathy. This is direct consequence of policies she and her party support.

The more that politicians of all stripes have to come face to face with the fallout of their decisions the better for us a nation.

One thing clear from this election is that certain radical Islamic groups feel they no longer need the apparatus of the labour party to get into parliament, as Jonathon Ashworth found out.

Note the American spelling of Labour.

I dozed off during the election coverage (with TV on) and woke up in the middle of her acceptance speech, to her saying 'this is the worst election I've ever been in.' Relieved to discover that she'd won her seat.

Ok, who ordered the racist ?

Pantah630 · 05/07/2024 15:26

Ah that explains why she sounded so shell shocked on R4 very early this morning.

AssortedLabels · 05/07/2024 15:26

She’s great. Disgusting conduct by the men.

Edited

I can’t make out what they are saying? Either way unacceptable and rude to be so disruptive when she won - yes not by very much but she still won.

PTSDBarbiegirl · 05/07/2024 15:35

Not a huge fan but was moved this morning as she gave her acceptance speech, the sounds of shouting mens voices trying to intimidate. She said Jo Cox's family had planned to be there but she cancelled as the level of violent verbal abuse, shouting and gang like behaviour had been awful. She didn't want her children there either. This can not be acceptable in this democracy. Protest and express free speech but abusing, threatening and intimidating women must be a crime?

listsandbudgets · 05/07/2024 15:36

Pantah630 · 05/07/2024 15:26

Ah that explains why she sounded so shell shocked on R4 very early this morning.

No that is not the reason.

The reason she sounded so shocked is because her share of the vote went down by 26.9% and she only won by 693 votes. Last time her majority was about 10600.

She nearly lost the election. Her colleague Khalid Mahmood in Perry Barr lost his seat to an independent. Prior to that he had a majority of over 15000.

Certainly the heckling and dirty politics were completely unacceptable and she had every right to be upset by them. However, she came uncomfortably close to losing her seat and regardless of anything else being hit in the ballot box like that must have been a huge shock.
