What a brave lady.

Whilst I am not an ardent Labour supporter, I completely support you and how you have stood up to the bullying, racism, violence and hatred sent your way.

Sad that your family could not be there to see your victory but under the circumstances you made the right choice.

That this country is allowing this type of intimidation and behaviour - we should be ashamed of ourselves.

The American spelling of the word Labour is irrelevant as it’s the name of a British political party!

And the spelling of the party is Labour.

Jk987 · 05/07/2024 16:19

What happened with her family that they couldn't be there?

Pandadunks · 05/07/2024 16:19

She’s a smart, strong woman in a position of authority- some men are absolutely fucking terrified of that. Oh, and she’s funny. Another thing they can’t stand.

What happened with her family that they couldn't be there?

She knew that she would be abused by this mob, and she didn’t want them to experience that as they are children.

YANBU!! But I accidently selected the wrong option and ruined the 100% poll. I don't think there's a way to change it. Sorry!!

Just tap the one you want and it will change.

Shocking to see people defending a woman being harassed and verbally abused by - she deserved it.

Jk987 · 05/07/2024 16:21

@MidnightPatrol wow shocking

yep I really worry about this

It feels like on every issue- unless you say the exact right combination of words or are completely perfect, everyone leaps to the other extreme

Pichee · 05/07/2024 16:22

some people on this thread trying to justify misogyny and rude behaviour is disturbing

just because she does not subscribe to your views does not mean civility should be chucked out the window

Why the hate for Angela Rayner?

I really like her. However, she does not conform to any expectation of a Deputy Prime Minister- that's why she is hated. She's a woman, not public school educated, didn't go to Cambridge, has a broad Manchester accent, was a single mother, left school at 16 with no qualifications, was a care worker and a union organizer, has a 'lively' dress sense and can look a bit 'ungroomed and unsleek' at times.
It's snobbery and misogyny.

Or that it's a-okay because the abuse is coming from one particular ideology. To claim otherwise is racist.

Oh, wait. It isn't. It's coming from another specific ideology too. The one where, if you say that sometimes sex matters, you're a bigot and/or a transphobe.

In other words, there's an effective mechanism for anyone who doesn't shut up and put up on all counts. As to the rights of women to go about our lives unencumbered and unintimidated? Why, that's bigotry too.

I fear for women in 2024. I truly do.

Being half Indian would make you not Islamophobic how??

Criticising these men does not make you islamophobic.

Their views are very public - look up Ahmed Yakoob or Jody McIntyre, who were the independents competing in Birmingham who seem to be the ringleaders.

And - Shabana Mahmood was also on the receiving end of this treatment and… she is also a Muslim.

No, it isn't. I admire her success in every one of the terms you've just stated.

It's her determination to throw other women under the bus that I object to.

crochetmonkey74 · 05/07/2024 16:24

Jody McIntyre seemed like a right twat. He just kept laughing at the abuse of her and refused to shake her hand at the end

Hummingbird75 · 05/07/2024 16:24

Can anyone confirm if there have been arrests?

This is simply unacceptable.

so again, nuanced. You like a lot of what she has done/ will do but think she could have done better in some areas.

All of those reasons are precisely why I like her.

ExtraOnions · 05/07/2024 16:27

They are a bunch of misogynist Muslim men, who want to harass and intimidate thier way into power. They use the excuse of Gaza, as a way of spreading hate and prejudice.

You will also see lots of other Muslims voted into parliament who would be horrified by these radical groups.

We know these people exist, the horrifying thing is the number of people who vote for them. Insular communities.

That might be yours- it is not the reason the Tories dislike her and many male voters and male politicians dislike her, and female voters and politicians. Many people never get past her background.

TheChosenTwo · 05/07/2024 16:28

With the amount of security and staffing at these events I’m gobsmacked they weren’t thrown out and that she had to actively ask for them to be removed. Utterly vile.

Hummingbird75 · 05/07/2024 16:24

They didn’t even throw them out when she requested it, let alone phone them police.

I think it slightly disturbing to hear that there are actively misogynistic campaigns pressuring voters to not elect women for religious reasons.

That’s an extremely worrying development.

If this really is the case, it's more than just slightly disturbing. It does rather confirm what I've started to suspect and seems to be following along the increasingly polarised (and misogynistic) attitudes women are having to contend with in this climate.

Ive Googled this and Phillips's name came up along with that of Shabana Mahmood. A PP upthread has pointed out that she's Muslim: in this particular context that is irrelevant.

She's a woman. That's what is sticking in their craw.

Absolutely this. He did nothing to try to stem the shouting - encouraged it, in fact - and refused to shake her hand at the end. Despicable.

I saw her interview this morning before I saw the full clip and thought “come on Jess. Calm down. Stop moaning about the campaign and celebrate the victory”

Then I saw the clip of the results, the heckling, Jody’s reaction and thought “wow. You were really quite reserved.”

She voted 'No' to a ceasefire so think I'll save my 'brave' comments to the women and children of Gaza having their limbs blown apart in a genocide. 'Brave' would be appropriately used for the children and people of Gaza having operations including c-sections without anaesthesia.
You can pick and choose when to support women but it comes across as racist and the people of Gaza are a million miles braver than an MP who didn't have it in her to call for a ceasefire. What kind of a human being doesn't call for a ceasefire?

I think she is a disgrace and cares not a jot for the females of Gaza. Weaponsing 'womanhood' is hypocritical when she said no to a ceasefire which would have saved a lot of female lives in Gaza not to mention lessened the physical and psychological horror they are experiencing.

There is 500 billion worth of gas off the coast of Gaza. Is that of more interest to her?!

You sound like you agree with the bullying men that were abusive to her? Intimating she deserved the threats and abuse. Well this is the UK where we respect the democratic vote. If we don't agree we have the right to peaceful protest that does not include abuse and threats.
