General Election Polling - completely off

Rusty101 · 03/07/2024 02:45

Just been looking at the polling for mine and 2 neighbouring seats and I really do think it is way off the mark. I know the demographic pretty well and the prediction of Labour wiping out these conservative seats doesn’t really seem likely. It’s the shy Tory syndrome where people don’t want to admit that they will be voting for them. Anyone else feel the same when looking at the polling in their area?

He’s definitely not cloistered but a very bright and analytical young man who has yet to find a party that his views and opinions align with. I would like to think that he will vote according to his own politics rather than those of his parents.
After 14 years of Tory government and not having experienced Labour government he doesn’t feel that he can make a definitive choice. He is not about to vote for a party that may not be in his best interests.

He has been critical of my views re the trans issue but it is finally dawning on him that it is not about gender but is about the whole equality issue. We have had numerous discussions about the misogyny and discrimination I have faced in my profession. Being a woman in any male dominated profession in the mid 80s was not easy. He has grown up with a mum who is the primary earner, something that many of his friends haven’t.
I hope that he becomes an intelligent voter, and not a champagne socialist who votes for Labour out of some bizarre reasoning that he is somehow benefiting the great unwashed by doing so.
In his own words “ none of them seem to be offering anything different, the country is almost bankrupt so it’s going to be grim for the next few years whoever is in power” he doesn’t believe in miracles or that we are going to wake up next Monday and everything will be fixed.

So he’s not going to vote anything other than Tory because he hasn’t experienced another party in power? When it’s easy to find manifestos and to look at the history of different parties in power? Doesn’t sound that analytical to me. And I don’t like the sound of only voting in his own interest either. He should be thinking what’s right for the country, not just his narrow interests.

ArseInTheCoOpWindow · 04/07/2024 21:16

that he is somehow benefiting the great unwashed by doing so

WTF?

If people are unwashed it’s because they can’t afford bloody energy bills.

Jesus, I’ve seen it all now🤮

’The great unwashed’ what a hideous snobby comment.

Same here.

Interest rates are still low, just not as low as they have been. They are currently pretty average based on the last 40yrs. And no I’m not worried about paying more tax, but it’s the tax raid on pensioners who are on very low incomes that concerns me. We are perilously close to the state pension being taxed, if the economy tanks again and inflation returns to higher levels again most pensioners on the basic pension will lose some of it to tax.

The biggest winner in this election would be 'none of the above' if it were on the ballot.

I don’t think it would. The biggest winner would be Anyone but the Tories.

Sorry but that is basically a very long flowery post describing a cop out re somebody who couldn’t be arsed to inform himself and vote. Let everybody else do the important job of deciding who the next government will be. It isn’t all about your own best interests. 🙄He doesn’t get to moan about the next few years then.

What tax raid on low income pensioners are you talking about? Pensions have always been taxable, just in the last the state pension fell below oersonal allowance. Because Tories have refused to move that, taxing lots of people who usually wouldn’t have been taxed, state pension may get over the threshold. It’s not a tax raid on pensions, and it’s entirely the fault if the Tories (though I hope Labour raise the tax threshold at some point as it seems low currently).

I can’t get my head round someone not using their first vote. I was beyond excited the first election I was eligible to vote and I’d have crawled to the polling station.

ArseInTheCoOpWindow · 04/07/2024 21:21

l worked in a misogynistic environment in the 80’s. So did all my girl friends.

Thats why we’re are voting Labour to eradicate this shit once and for all.

It was the 80’s. It doesn’t make you special.

My eldest was 16 when voting for the first time in the Scottish referendum - I was impressed at how much thought he and his friends put into their decision. My youngest has just voted for the first time today.

Using your vote is an important message - even if you just scrawl through the list and write ‘none of the above’.

The same as I thought before, that labour will win but not by as much as many originally thought I.e. tories getting less than 100 seats

When people moan about the reactions they get when they say they vote Tory… it’s this. It’s because you say things like this.
This is exactly why they are known as the nasty party.

Diorchristian · 04/07/2024 22:10

I'm flummoxed that anyone of all things feel labour is a supporter of women's rights!
Aside from this tiresome trans issue it's the pink bus etc

Fair. Lots on here we’re saying it would be a huge shock and nobody was voting Labour.

Yep, with a categoric denial that their seat would be taken. Well a lot of them must have been …

There’s a thing on the sky website that shows exit polls by constituency.

I said a few days ago I doubted the electoral calculus prediction for my seat which was an 80% chance of labour gain, the sky exit poll is currently showing a 90% chance of CON hold so looks like I’ll be right.
