I find text speak more difficult - people who use it are morons

i am clearly too old.
if someone types in text speak it takes me ages to decipher it (even longer that it takes to read Cod's posts)

I judge them.

I read the post and think that they are clearly a 14 year old on the half term.
or worse, i imagine them to have greasy hair, missing teeth and living in a caravan.

I know it is irrational. i know i am miss judgy of judgyness but i can't help it.

margosbeenplayingwithmynoonoo · 10/04/2008 12:06

So there

SquonkTheBeerGuru · 10/04/2008 12:06

YANBU

(unless that counts as text speak, in which case YABU)

doggiesayswoof · 10/04/2008 12:07

This may get unpleasant

But I agree mamazon. Also as zippi says there are no paragraphs - v hard to read longer posts.

(Is it because they are posting from their phone I wonder?)

2GIRLS · 10/04/2008 12:08

I h8 txt spk 2, but sumtmes it so mch kwiker tho its a nitemare 2 try 2 read.

bergentulip · 10/04/2008 12:11

But is it quicker? Really?

2GIRLS · 10/04/2008 12:12

If someone uses text speak in everyday life, it is very very annoying. But if you're texting on your phone it makes more sense to shorten the words because it will cost less to send less pages of texts.

I think that the 'yoof of today' don't actually know how to spell properly and don't know how to use correct grammer, and texting is a cause of this.

bergentulip · 10/04/2008 12:13

) GrammAr

doggiesayswoof · 10/04/2008 12:13

I find it quicker to use predictive text and normal words. And I don't send long texts anyway.

2GIRLS · 10/04/2008 12:15

I generally don't use the really annoying young persons txt speak when I text, because I'm a bit old and my friends will think I'm loony.
When my nieces text me I can hardly understand it.

But I do use predictive text which is the quickest and it spells the whole word out.

No1ErmaBombeckfan · 10/04/2008 12:15

I think textspeak is fine when you are being charged by character or limited to a certain amount of characters..

MN gives us the lattitude to hang explain ourselves....

flubdub · 10/04/2008 12:15

I hate text speak.

2GIRLS · 10/04/2008 12:16

Alright, thank you bergentulip I pretend to be so academic but you'll never see me post in the Pedants threads!!

bergentulip · 10/04/2008 12:16

Irritating spelling corrections aside, I do agree if you are using a phone to text someone, and have to get an inordinate amount of information into one text, then it can help- ie,
cu2nite,luking4wd2it,meet u by choclit factry, 4warn u k8 will b ther,so get it if u no cum 2....
(sorry! I am CRAP at txt speak, never do it. Can you tell?????!!!!)

and the like(!) However, that just took me twice the amount of time to work out and type, then to have done it longhand in the first place. So, the argument, it's quicker does not fly with me!

YouCantTeuchThis · 10/04/2008 12:17

I was reading something yesterday that said that 'text-speak' was affecting baby names...many people registered babies with shortened names and bad spelling.

It takes me ages to even try text language!

My sister, however, refuses to even use contractions in texts and emails!

themoon66 · 10/04/2008 12:17

I think it's a shame when someone posts a great long OP seeking help, but they type the whole thing with no paragraphs and in text-speak. I give up half way through the post and I guess others do to. They must then wonder why nobody appears to want to help them.

Pinkchampagne · 10/04/2008 12:19

I don't like text talk either. I find it really hard to read.

No1ErmaBombeckfan · 10/04/2008 12:20

I think predictive text is even worse....

I dread to think what will be said about 2000 AD people when our remains are finally dug out from under the debris ...

Lost ability to communicate, had to use smaller electromagnetically charged devices to run their lives, entertainment come from a small box in the corner....

(I meant me being irritating by the way 2girls, not your spelling!!)

ranting · 10/04/2008 12:22

Text speak is for phones, not a forum, so no YANBU.

MrsMattie · 10/04/2008 12:23

dnt b sch a msrbl btch

Mamazon · 10/04/2008 12:26

Oh the no paragraphs thing does irritate me too.

I dont find text speak easier either. it takes me twice as long to work out how to shorten the word.

i think it must be an age thing. you know that buzz thing that is meant to prevent teenagers hanging around shops but older people can't hear it? i think text speak is like that.

if your past a certain age you just can't understand it, your brain doesn't read it
