I find text speak more difficult - people who use it are morons

i am clearly too old.
if someone types in text speak it takes me ages to decipher it (even longer that it takes to read Cod's posts)

I judge them.

I read the post and think that they are clearly a 14 year old on the half term.
or worse, i imagine them to have greasy hair, missing teeth and living in a caravan.

I know it is irrational. i know i am miss judgy of judgyness but i can't help it.

Surely tho only point of text speak is in order to keep a text message on a mobile phone to one message (with a max number of characters). Therefore there is no point in using text speak on a forum such as this where the number of characters you can use is unlimited.

There , I have spoken.

3andnomore · 10/04/2008 12:29

must admit, I hardly ever notice any text speak on this site until someone stupidly bravely opens a thread about it, saying how much it annoys them, lol....

Nbg · 10/04/2008 12:29

Have you got Sky Mamazon?

If so put on channel 361, read and enjoy

Mamazon · 10/04/2008 12:40

I've got virgin tv but i am guessing you mean one of those music chanels thathas the messages underneath?

yes they arwe a triumph of the British education system aren't they.

worse still is BEBO. i had a look at my sister's page, and then at some of her friends
i don't think there was a single word that was correct

I too loathe text speak although i can understand the need for it in certain situations.

Bad grammer and spellin however are just ignerant.

PS Mamazon UR2 COOL!!

Blandmum · 10/04/2008 13:09

Lack of spaces gets to me.

People who write masses of stuff with no paragraphs, I'm sorry but I just give up. I realise that they might have very important things to post, but I just can't pay attention.

Text Speak is just awful.

Janos · 10/04/2008 13:12

I had good grammar and spelling drummed into me by my Gran, who was an English teacher!

I too hate the 'no space' thing. It's so hard to read.

Young people these days etc etc...

onlyjoking9329 · 10/04/2008 13:16

i can't really get worked up about it. really thou i must admit i give up trying to understand text speak.
i am saying nothing about spelling and paragraphs

loopylou6 · 10/04/2008 13:17

I think a certain amount of text talk is ok.
If i am writing out a text message i will shorten things to save going into another text message.
When i'm on mumsnet i am guilty however of sometimes saying 'coz' instead of because and 'dya' instead of do you and 'gonna' instead of going to and 'wanna' instead of want to, oh god, im a text talker arnt i?

TotalChaos · 10/04/2008 13:17

on the subject of no paras - a very intelligent well written crime blog I sometimes read has NO PARAS. It's a moral dilemma - should I send him a gentle e-mail suggesting that a small stylistic improvement would make his blog lots more readabile?

OverMyDeadBody · 10/04/2008 13:19

Text speak is for text messages only! When you're young and proficient in it it is quicker and saves on space and the cost.

But it shouldn't be used on forums or in emails!

I don't bother reading posts that are huge blocks of text with no spaces, lots of text speak, and bad grammar as well.

YANBU. I judge too.

OverMyDeadBody · 10/04/2008 13:20

loopy I'd classify those as abbreviations and slang rather than text speak myself.

loopylou6 · 10/04/2008 13:20

See now i know why no body ever replys to my posts much, its because i have shocking spelling and grammar

loopylou6 · 10/04/2008 13:21

Ahhh well thats better then, i'm off the hook

Lazycow · 10/04/2008 13:21

Well I tried predictive text and it seemed impossible to use to me but them I am a technophobe - well more of one as I get older.

I aviod sending texts because it usually takes me so long to type out what I want to say on a phone that I die of bordeom while I am doing it and often think f**ck this I'm going to phone instead and leave a message if they are not there.

I am aware that people don't like this though and sometimes much prefer a text as it is less intrusive. I thus do use text speak a bit just to shorten the message but only when texting, not when typing or on emails etc

OverMyDeadBody · 10/04/2008 13:23

where those mistakes deliberate loupy?

OverMyDeadBody · 10/04/2008 13:25

lazycow predictive text gets easier the more you use it as you can programme words in and also it stores words you use and so gets to know your own vocabulary and will predict more accurately the more you use it like this.

VictorianSqualor · 10/04/2008 13:28

Text speak does annoy me to an extent, and I try to read it anyway because I think the person may need help with their OP and don't want to be put off but it is hard to read.

'Ur' and '2' don't bother me too much, because I can understand what they mean but sometimes the whole thing makes absolutely no sense.

Libra1975 · 10/04/2008 13:29

I hate text speak, however my mother (who is 62) does use it for her text messsages which I find odd (especially as she can get to grips with txt spk but apparently not how to use predictive text!).

I also like paragraphs and sentences being started with a capital letter. I can't say anything about grammar or spelling as mine is so terrible!

Nbg · 10/04/2008 13:31

Yes its the music channel.

In fact I think only a few weeks ago it had some teenage girl texting in her pregnancy dilema via text speak.

Wonderful

loopylou6 · 10/04/2008 13:33

Omg NBG, i know the music channel you mean, is it the one where people text in things like 748 U IZ WEL FIT TXT BAK

loopylou6 · 10/04/2008 13:34

Or IZ DA NE FIT BOYZ WANNA CHAT WIT ME

Lazycow · 10/04/2008 13:34

OMDB - Well I have been repeatedly told this by my younger work colleagues but my one experinece with predicitive text (someone switched it on for me 'to be helpful') left me traumatised and completely unable to send any messages that made any sense.

I couldn't work out how to switch it off for ages and was to embarrased to ask for help so couldn't text for about a month until I worked out how to turn it off.

Actually I didn't miss it much, I just replied to all texts by phone or ignored those that required no reply.

Libra - it seems your mother and I have a lot in common

fiodyl · 10/04/2008 13:34

I am not 14 years old
I am not uneducated
I am not lazy
I dont live in a caravan or have missing teeth
I have psoriatic arthritis
I use acronyms, abbreviations, shorten words and use 'txt spk' because it its easier 4 me

I am fairly new to this forum and i assumed taht all of the above were accepted and understood here
I was wrong and apologise 4 any offense or annoyance caused
