I find text speak more difficult - people who use it are morons

i am clearly too old.
if someone types in text speak it takes me ages to decipher it (even longer that it takes to read Cod's posts)

I judge them.

I read the post and think that they are clearly a 14 year old on the half term.
or worse, i imagine them to have greasy hair, missing teeth and living in a caravan.

I know it is irrational. i know i am miss judgy of judgyness but i can't help it.

Ha, there are about ten of those daft channels aren't there?
I sometimes watch them just to laugh at

Then people put up their pictures too.
It's ridiculously expensive as well, I mean about a pound per message and they spend all day asking 'wot u up2 342 u got a pic'

I actually saw one girl saying 'I iz pregnant n singl any1 wan2 b a daddy' or something.

VictorianSqualor · 10/04/2008 13:37

Hang on, was this thread aimed at Fiodyl?
If it was it's pretty fucking nasty.
(Though I wouldn't have thought that of Mamazon)

No1ErmaBombeckfan · 10/04/2008 13:38

I use Skype to text when I am at home - it is cheaper (than my rates) and i have a keyboard and no silly, fiddly buttons...

Wuxiapian · 10/04/2008 13:39

I hate predictive text, too! Just don't have the patience for it!

Txt spk mch beta - minimal effrt, tme n cost.

Dnt mean im stoopid tho!

Libra1975 · 10/04/2008 13:39

Lazycow - do you phone 30 minutes after sending a text to make sure the recipient has got it?
If so what time are you planning to come round tomorrow?

Libra1975 · 10/04/2008 13:41

When you use txt spk surely you have to turn off predictive text which means the words that you need to actually text in full rather than abbreviate would take much longer???

stoopid has more letters than the original word.

Lazycow · 10/04/2008 13:51

Libra - If you don't use predictive text, texting is incredibly laborious and time consuming and frankly I have better things to do with my time.

Ideally I should get to grips with predictive text but I can't be a*d so I avoid texting whenever possible.

When I have to text I keep the message VERY short and I use text speak for some of the words. I never use text speak if the word is longer than the proper word. 'c u at 8pm' is quicker to type on a phone than 'see you at 8pm'. The first is 6 characters, the second is 11 characters and believe me when you are as slow as I am at texting every character saved counts

Even with all these measures, it nonetheless takes me ages to send an even simple text.

OverMyDeadBody · 10/04/2008 14:00

you can use predictive text and txt speak simultaniously actually, coz if ur fone get's used to words u commonly use (4 me it's tonite, u, ur, coz etc.) it will predict these for you. You only have to save a spelling into the phone once and it will remember it. Txt speak is fine for text messages, but not for posts on here.

I'm sure this thread isn't aimed at anyone in particular either.

fiodyl · 10/04/2008 14:03

no im sure its not its just a coinsidence it started minutes after i was slagged off on another thread for using it

using predictive text is so easy.

But to be able to use predictive text, you have to be able to spell in the first instance.

I wonder if there is a generational and educational divide between people who use predictive text (older, spellers) and younger people who use text speak (younger, non-spellers).

CatIsSleepy · 10/04/2008 14:18

i love predictive texting
but know a lot of people who don't get it. think they make the mistake of looking at the word when it's half way through and looks like gobbledigook

Lazycow · 10/04/2008 14:20

fiodyl

I really would ignore this. When you have been here a while (and I hope you stay) you will get to understand that threads on certain things get started every now and again and usually

This topic (textspeak) has been done before as has (among others):

-Stay at home mothers (SAHM) vs working of the home mothers (WOTHM)
-mother and baby parking
-breastfeeding vs bottle feeding
-grammer and punctuation
-grape eating in supermarkets
-jars of baby food (haven't had one on this for a while actually)
-Fruit shoots and cheese strings etc .

I wouldn't take it personally and I would keep using text speak if it makes typing easier for you. Just try and make the posts understandable and use some paragraphs (which I am sure you do) so that people don't have to work too hard to read it.

Lazycow · 10/04/2008 14:24

Blueshoes I'm 43 and though my typing and use of predictive text isn't good I can spell.

CatisSleepy is right, when I tried using it I just couldn't work out how to make it write what I wanted it to.

It did look like gobbledigook and I felt like I was in some sort of Kafkaesque world where I didn't know the rules, although it seems like everyone else seems to know them so maybe I should try again with a bit more patience this time.

CatIsSleepy · 10/04/2008 14:27

yes i don't think not being able to use predictive text and spelling are connected actually

lazy, just type the whole word
when you get to the end either the word will be right or you'll be offered various options to choose from or you'll have to spell it out for your phone's dictionary

actually that makes it sound like hard work

it's not, honest! but i have had to teach my phone lots of words over the years
obv i can now never get a new phone because I'd have to start all over again

Lazycow · 10/04/2008 14:34

Ahhh - CatIs sleepy thank you. Do you know that is the first time I've realised how predictive text works? MN is very useful sometimes.

Now I may go off and try and use it again - maybe.

CatIsSleepy · 10/04/2008 14:35

LOL Lazy don't thank me til you've tried it!

blueshoes · 10/04/2008 14:40

lazycow, make sure you actually have predictive text switched on. Otherwise, it will Still be goobledigook when you get to the end of the word.

hercules1 · 10/04/2008 14:43

Hate it too.

Lazycow · 10/04/2008 14:44

Oh OK thanks !

CatIsSleepy · 10/04/2008 15:00
