Friends accident & mini break

Margo2023 · 01/07/2024 23:20

Me and my friend have a 3 night mini break away in a couple of weeks, not far, just a couple of hours each way by public transport. Both already booked our own transport. She picked, booked and paid up front for the hotel at 250 each. Fast forward to today, she has sprained her wrist after a night out and now is unsure if she will be able to travel. I would normally claim on travel insurance, if we can't move it which I don't think we can due to the hotel availability (being Summer). She says she doesn't bother with travel insurance. I am now wondering if I am obliged to lay her my share of the hotel? I can't find anyone else to come along

Is she concerned she can’t manage her luggage as you’re travelling by public transport, but doesn’t want to ask you for help? Have you asked her? If this isn’t an issue, I wouldn’t be subsidising her choice not to go or her not believing in travel insurance. She should pay.

I went to Jamaica with a fractured wrist.

A sprained wrist is usually done and dusted in a couple of days... Or you just wear a stretchy bandage for a week. Even if I'd broken my wrist I'd be coming on holiday with you!

rookiemere · 04/07/2024 11:15

@Margo2023 any update?
Hopefully she was just in shock with the initial pain and plans are back on track.

She's sprained her wrist and can't go on a mini break in a couple of weeks time??? She needs to get a grip.

She can't..... she's sprained her wrist 😂😂😂

T1Dmama · 04/07/2024 13:17

Blimey kids at my DD’s swim club just strap up their wrist and still swim with sprained wrists!
I’d go on your own… and no I wouldn’t reimburse her for her half as it’s her fault she didn’t take out insurance!

This is going to be one of those threads where the OP never comes back, isn't it?

I broke my wrist the day before driving two hundred miles to attend my father's funeral. It was in a cast and a sling, but I took it out of the sling and got there any way. I wore a big jumper to hide the cast. Probably all illegal, but I wasn't missing his funeral.

DecoratingDiva · 05/07/2024 12:51

She’s “sprained her wrist” so won’t be able to travel in 2 weeks time. Really?

Why doesn’t she want to go on holiday? What’s her real reason for trying to back out?

And do, you absolutely do not have to cover her financial losses if she cancels.

Myblindsaredown · 05/07/2024 12:56

Who doesn’t travel cue to a strained wrist 😂

Skybluepinky · 06/07/2024 18:51

Sounds like she doesn’t want to go with u, y would a sprained wrist stop anyone going on holiday.

Tartantotty · 06/07/2024 18:55

Oh dear, what a feeble excuse. When I broke my arm I managed to get to work every day. She must pay her share unless you can get someone else to go in her place.

Hello and thanks for such a massive response! I admit I am terrible this time at posting a reply. Update: we are going. I think there was a bit of initial panic / uncertainty. Thanks for the advice, my plan was to go ahead solo regardless and make the most of it. But I am pleased my buddy is coming along. Looking forward to our holiday!

Easily to lie with a 'sprained wrist', put a bandage on...'it hurts'. Excuse of the year for me, laughable.

RampantIvy · 07/07/2024 08:21

Great update @Margo2023
Have a lovely time.

GoogleWhacked · 07/07/2024 08:55

That's a good update @Margo2023, glad you both get to go - enjoy your holiday!

It sounds like she panicked, but realised quite quickly that it wasn't a blocker.

I broke my foot on a Friday night two weeks ago and went to work on the Monday, she's either being ridiculous or lying about why she doesn't want to go

I broke my leg and dislocated my ankle over a year ago (granted I tore ligaments and had soft tissue damage too, due to the dislocation[ and it's still far from back to normal. How did you manage to go back to work? Aren't you in plaster?

Caroparo52 · 07/07/2024 19:29

Either she goes or she looses her share of the deposit. Not your responsibility to refund her. Hope you enjoy the trip with or without your pathetic friend

I broke my right arm 5 days before a planned holiday to Rhodes with a friend, it was touch and go as to whether or not I could fly, was given the all clear and had a really lovely, relaxing holiday. Obviously I couldn't do everything that we had planned, had to have help with bags, suitcases, opening doors etc and I was very protective of my arm.
Sounds as if she's having second thoughts or has something else planned, think you need to have a conversation with her.
It's not your problem is she doesn't have travel insurance.
