Friends accident & mini break

Margo2023 · 01/07/2024 23:20

Me and my friend have a 3 night mini break away in a couple of weeks, not far, just a couple of hours each way by public transport. Both already booked our own transport. She picked, booked and paid up front for the hotel at 250 each. Fast forward to today, she has sprained her wrist after a night out and now is unsure if she will be able to travel. I would normally claim on travel insurance, if we can't move it which I don't think we can due to the hotel availability (being Summer). She says she doesn't bother with travel insurance. I am now wondering if I am obliged to lay her my share of the hotel? I can't find anyone else to come along

There is literally no reason for someone not to travel because of a sprained wrist.

MissScarletInTheBallroom · 02/07/2024 00:03

That's the worst excuse I've ever heard.

Unless it was an extremely horrendous sprain she'll fine by a couple of weeks. Is she planning on staying in bed until its healed or will she be going about daily life in the meantime?

KTSl1964 · 02/07/2024 00:09

lots of hotels allow you to cancel getting a full refund - you need to check this out with her and get proof of the booking - yes she could go if she wanted.

brassbells · 02/07/2024 00:09

IMHO if someone wants to do something they manage do it even if it is painful or uncomfortable

But if someone doesn't want to do something they use a small thing and make it huge

So imho I think there is another reason she doesn't want to go cos this is a very feeble excuse

MariaLuna · 02/07/2024 00:10

Go by yourself OP. It will be the making of you.

Never need to rely on others again.

Honestly, not scary, take a book, mobile and phone charger. Take a walk after checking in, have dinner, chill out. Your future self will thank you.

and for fucks sake don't fall for a creep at the bar claiming he's single/divorced with a wife and kids at home

Ginkypig · 02/07/2024 00:12

My 70+ year old friend had a fall the night before I had a break with her and while she didn’t break anything she could barely move and was a mess of bruises. I think a couple of strains too. I was worried about her So I told her I was obviously disappointed but told her she should maybe stay home and rest to which she replied no bloody way! I’m coming as long as I can get into the lodge il be quite happy to sit and watch everyone else enjoy themselves. Lol

my point is your friend is being ridiculous in comparison about this whole thing both why she can’t come and for not getting insurance!

ForGreyKoala · 02/07/2024 00:16

She's sprained her wrist and can't go on a mini break in a couple of weeks time??? She needs to get a grip.

JanglingJack · 02/07/2024 00:16

Ask her if her feet still work.

Terrible excuse, she needs to reimburse you.

ThatAgileGoldMoose · 02/07/2024 00:17

It's a pity it's not insured, I would pay good money to hear that conversation with the insurance claims department!

MariaLuna · 02/07/2024 00:17

@Ginkypig

I like your friend!

My mum had great friends at that age.

Lived their life, hard times, but enjoying "old" age.

You never know when it's finished. Every day is a gift!

Treelichen · 02/07/2024 00:20

Ffs, I went on holiday with a broken leg and just cracked on.

pandasorous · 02/07/2024 00:21

emilyelf · 01/07/2024 23:28

I went to a champions league final in crutches!

yes, but were you playing?

JurassicClark · 02/07/2024 00:22

Agree with everyone else, there's no reason a sprained wrist means a mini break is no longer doable.

(Unless of course there's a dripfeed that it's a sketching mini break and she can't move her drawing hand)

AGoingConcern · 02/07/2024 00:31

I can't see a reason for a sprained wrist to stop her traveling unless the trip is focused on some specific activity she won't be able to do.

But I wouldn't follow any of PP's advice to tell her to buck up or whatnot just yet unless what you're wanting is for her to really not want to go on mini-break with you. Your friend just injured herself and she's likely feeling a little low and blowing things out of proportion. Be sympathetic about the injury and suggest she focus on feeling better this week then see how she's feeling about the trip this coming weekend.

summeroccupation · 02/07/2024 00:39

I managed on the train to Cornwall last year with a broken ankle!!

Shes changed her mind for some reason and is using the wrist as an excuse.

BobbyBiscuits · 02/07/2024 00:40

A person with a sprained wrist can fairly easily travel to beunos Aires two minutes after they've injured it? Obviously they'll want painkillers. But it's hardly life threatening?
So I think she'll manage to travel two hours in two weeks time.
I broke my hip and could move enough to do that trip a week after surgery!

HMW1906 · 02/07/2024 00:59

There is absolutely no reason she would not be able to travel in a few weeks time with a sprained wrist. If this is what she is telling you then I think she’s probably just making excuses because she no longer wants to go on the trip!

Margo2023 · 02/07/2024 01:07

Thanks all, did not expect so many responses! I am wondering if there is form here for wriggling out. She seems keen to go but equally can be really flakey. I can be a bit soft and let things like this slide. But money is tight and so I am trying to be a bit more assertive generally and here specially. Will see what tomorrow brings

She won’t be able to travel in a couple of weeks because of a sprained wrist? Give over. Tell her to put her big girl pants on and get on with it.

This

Waffle78 · 02/07/2024 01:15

My DD sprained her ankle the day before a planned day out by coach. As she often does during a seizure. I put some ibuleve gel on it and a support stocking gave her pain relief. She was limping but rested it as much as possible. The next day she was back to normal pretty much. A sprained wrist really doesn't take long to heal.🤣🤣🤣 It's not like she has to put weight on it.

user1492757084 · 02/07/2024 01:19

She willbe fine and still paying her fair share anyway.

saraclara · 02/07/2024 01:27

Even if she had travel insurance, there's no way they'd cover cancellation for a sprained wrist! They'd (want to) laugh in her face.

saraclara · 02/07/2024 01:28

And if she doesn't go, she absolutely does still have to pay her share. She can't expect you to cover her costs.

saraclara · 02/07/2024 01:32

Ah, maybe I misunderstood. You don't want to go if she doesn't?

Has she made a non-cancellable booking? If so, that's on her. These days there's almost always the option of paying a little extra to make a booking cancelable. And booking directly with the hotel is usually cancelable anyway.
