Friends accident & mini break

Margo2023 · 01/07/2024 23:20

Me and my friend have a 3 night mini break away in a couple of weeks, not far, just a couple of hours each way by public transport. Both already booked our own transport. She picked, booked and paid up front for the hotel at 250 each. Fast forward to today, she has sprained her wrist after a night out and now is unsure if she will be able to travel. I would normally claim on travel insurance, if we can't move it which I don't think we can due to the hotel availability (being Summer). She says she doesn't bother with travel insurance. I am now wondering if I am obliged to lay her my share of the hotel? I can't find anyone else to come along

She's trying to flake out on you. Sprained wrist?! Come on.

LadyWhistled0wn · 02/07/2024 09:20

It's a sprained wrist, tell her to stop being a drama Queen.

amusedbush · 02/07/2024 09:34

A sprained wrist wouldn't stop her from travelling - not now, and certainly not two weeks from now.

She's laying the groundwork for cancelling your trip. It's the friendship equivalent of groaning and sniffling at work when planning to pull a sickie the next day.

MabelMaybe · 02/07/2024 09:51

I'd be more concerned that she doesn't bother with travel insurance. Would you get landed with getting her to hospital if she falls ill or gets injured abroad?

WetBandits · 02/07/2024 09:52

A sprained wrist?! 😂

shearwater2 · 02/07/2024 10:10

If she flakes out I'd go on my own and leave her to claim on her travel insurance and pay her my half of the hotel room cost.

BlokeHereInPeace · 02/07/2024 10:23

Plug deffo getting pulled here, good luck.

The trip is in the OP's home country. And travel insurance would not pay out in this case anyway given the injury is relatively minor.

Jetstream · 02/07/2024 10:24

I’d a criend like your one OP. We are no longer friends. She was terrible for dropping out of planned activities at the last minute. The list of excuses were anything and every possible one.

She thought only of herself and expected her friends (including me) to think only of her.

OP says the friend doesn't have travel insurance so unless she (the friend) unknowingly has it through her bank account or similar, she's shit out of luck 😬

fleabites · 02/07/2024 10:32

There's no reason why she can't travel in two weeks time with a sprained wrist. She's trying to wriggle out of it. You should not offer to pay her share - she either comes along anyway with the sprained wrist or she doesn't but that does not mean you should have to pay for her share.

TreadSoftlyOnMyDreams · 02/07/2024 10:32

No chance your holiday insurance will pay out for this. You don't say that you've transferred the funds to her or if you are sharing a room and so can't do it on a solo basis?

That's a shame X, sorry to hear you are in pain. Hopefully all will be better by the time we leave. I've checked and my holiday insurance won't cover cancellation for such a minor injury. I'm happy to go solo and cover my half of the costs if you decide not to come though obviously it will be a bit sh*te without some company so would really like it if you could try to make it. We can find some low key activities that won't aggravate it.

I've checked and my holiday insurance won't cover cancellation for such a minor injury so if you decide to cancel the trip I am sorry but I won't be able to reimburse you for the trip. Can you see if the hotel will allow you to rebook for a later date? I could do a weekend in September? Let me know what you would like to do as I'll need to try and cancel my leave with work. Feel better soon.

Why can’t she just strap it?

I broke my ankle 3 weeks before I went on a girls holiday. I checked with doctors if I could fly and they said yes. The cast was taken off and I had a moon boot.

it seems she’s using it as an excuse.

AngelDelightButNotStrawberry · 02/07/2024 11:27

A sprained wrist?? She’s taking the piss.

KreedKafer · 02/07/2024 12:04

My mum, who is 80, fell and broke her arm in two places, so badly that she had to have surgery and two metal plates put in. The bruising covered her arm from her knuckles up to the middle of her upper arm, it was absolutely horrific. And as you can imagine, she was in a lot of pain.

Three days after the surgery I went with her to the hospital so they could take off the bandages and replace them with a cast. They asked her if she minded what colour the cast was, and she said 'Ooh, well, can you show me the colours please, because I'm going to a wedding tomorrow and I want it to match my outfit'.

Pain or no pain, sling or no sling, she never even considered missing the chance of a weekend away in a hotel and dancing the night away at a wedding - I can only imagine what she'd say if someone told her they couldn't go on a mini break because they sprained their wrist a fortnight ago!

lemming40 · 03/07/2024 18:18

I would just go anyway if she's going to be so pathetic.

She won’t be able to travel in a couple of weeks because of a sprained wrist? Give over. Tell her to put her big girl pants on and get on with it.

Exactly this ! It’s a sprained wrist not a broken leg , why on earth can’t she travel ?

MagicFarawayTea · 03/07/2024 18:37

I really can’t see why you should be out of pocket for this? If everything is paid for already ( from what I understand from your post) then I would go anyway. It’s her choice to go or not but she loses what she’s paid.

PoopingAllTheWay · 01/07/2024 23:58

Its an excuse

I broke my wrist and was still
doing full 24 hourly care

This! Me too! Broken wrist and still looking after a profoundly disabled person 24/7 on my own. And cooking Christmas dinner!

a sprained wrist and can’t travel? Pull the other one, she’s having a laugh.

Toptops · 03/07/2024 20:53

Same same. Shouldn't stop her coming unless she doesn't want to anyway.
Sorry....

MMUmum · 03/07/2024 21:44

I travelled to Australia with a broken wrist in a plaster cast, I got a split cast in case of swelling on the plane, but other than that I just got on with it, it was fine

Topazmumma · 03/07/2024 21:59

Is she planning to walk to the station on her hands?? 🤔

Olderbutt · 03/07/2024 22:03

Sprained wrist!!! Oh for goodness sake, that wouldn't stop her travelling. I took hubby on holiday with a broken leg in a cast!

Blueink · 04/07/2024 03:07

Unless there’s a legitimate reason - such as she needs to be able to drive there, she’s being ridiculous. I’ve travelled with broken bones and yes been in some discomfort, but basically ok to participate in everyday type activities.

if she wants to cancel, that’s her choice of course, but do insist she foots her share of the bill. It shouldn’t fall to you OP. Plus if she’s flaky, don’t plan another trip with her.

MulberryRaspberry · 04/07/2024 03:11

Does she walk on her hands? Confused
