The post person entered my house.

I've just seen it on my Ring doorbell.

17yr old DD had left the door unlocked for her friend so she didn't have to come down to let them in. Not uncommon.

Post arrived, including a parcel, during this time. When no one answered the door, the post person tried the handle, opened up the door and came into my home.

Granted, DD shouldn't have left the door unlocked, but it doesn't make what the post person did ok.

Just me who thinks it was completely unreasonable for them to have even tried the handle?!

what made you check this more than a day later op?

mapleriver · 30/06/2024 17:07

fieldsofbutterflies · 30/06/2024 17:03

Maybe you shouldn't leave your doors unlocked then?

Yeah I have OCD and normally check the handles 20 times a day, I'd been home for an hour and was doing something in the garden on the other side of the house hence not locking up yet and didn't expect someone to CHECK MY HANDLE and ENTER MY HOME because of an unlocked door, when a safe place is specified and followed 99.9% of the time. He left them in the middle of the kitchen too, not just on the inside of the door and it icked me out that a stranger had been walking in my house while I was home alone.

Amazon did this to me and I don't care about everyone saying they were doing you were a favour, it crosses boundaries imo. They shouldn't be testing handles, and they shouldn't be coming inside. I reported mine - I felt shaken for the whole rest of the day as when it happened to me it was dark nights, there's no reason for a stranger to try your handle and come inside

Why was your door unlocked?

As an ex postal worker, 'in this day and age', yeah, notes on the door can be useful. It let us know if someone was disabled and slow to attend the door, if babies were sleeping, or if someone was on nights. So it's also helpful to us (as we don't want to be lugging your parcel around or making a second attempt delivery the next day!) if you can direct us towards a safe space of your choosing. For some people, this is by leaving the door to a porch, or somewhere else indoors and dry, open. Your postie tried to do you a solid favour here, and yes, I understand that maybe they shouldn't have done it, but they were probably thinking they were helping you out. It's not like they came inside and took their lunch break on your couch is it?

For future reference, you can download the Royal Mail app, if writing on a bit of paper is beyond you or considered old fashioned. There is an option on it to assign a designated safe space, in which you can put 'Shed' or 'Garage'. It comes up on the handheld device we use to scan your packages, so there's no chance of the postie missing it as it basically takes up the entire screen and you have to click on it to make it go away.

Or, if you wish to be more direct, speak to your postman. Tell them where you want any parcels to be left and that will be the end of it, but my recommendation is to get the app to save yourself any further trouble (and I say that as an ex-RM worker, not trying to promote it but it's really quite useful).

I tape a note to the front door telling them to leave any packages in the outhouse or just chuck it in the hallway lol even when I'm in the house lol I imagine that in this day in age knocking on peoples doors with constant packages is a pain in the arse so I try to make it easier all round

JaneJeffer · 30/06/2024 17:08

Did they move in or what?

FeelingHotHotHotFeelingHotHotHot · 30/06/2024 17:08

@Globules

DO NOT LEAVE THE DOOR UNLOCKED! Especially when your daughter is on her own in the house. Fuk me sideways. 🙄 'Left the door unlocked cuz my daughter CBA to go downstairs to answer the door. Not uncommon.' Errr yeah it is. I live in a very safe rural area, and everyone I know locks the door, because you don't know who may be passing through!

Assaults and rapes and murders happen in quiet low population rural areas as well as high population towns and cities, They happen in places where everyone said 'I never thought that would happen here!' And robberies too! Especially on the edges of villages where the robbers have a quick and easy getaway.

And also YABU. The 'post person' did nothing wrong. If you never want them to pop packages in (for YOUR CONVENIENCE) then lock your bloody doors! And tell your daughter to not be so lazy and get downstairs when her friend comes - and answer the door!

@Globules

Been burgled once. Everything locked on that occasion.

If that IS true, (and I am skeptical,) it doesn't change the fact that the vast majority of robberies are done at properties where a downstairs window has been left open, or a door unlocked.

Juyjuly32 · 30/06/2024 17:08

Not sure about the OP. But don't you all lock your door?! Unless my DC are playing out my door is always locked

paidbythejob · 30/06/2024 17:09

I wouldn't expect them to try the door, but if it was unlocked, I'd rather they left it just inside the door than didn't leave it at all. Yes, they should follow your instructions to use the shed, but as the door is (I assume) rarely left unlocked, it's unlikely to become a frequent occurrence. Unless there's evidence that they snooped around inside the house, I don't see it as a big problem.

Megifer · 30/06/2024 17:09

Yanbu posties who do this could open themselves up to all sorts of accusations.

I've genuinely never come across this round here, though I've said before they probably know they risk getting a smack in the mouth or someones grumpy "I hate strangers" dog charging at them 🤣

Ime the 'rule' is if you know the person you'll know if they wouldn't mind. If you don't know them then don't risk it. Some people don't like strangers just opening their door.

Lilacapples · 30/06/2024 17:09

Of course you aren’t being unreasonable. Boggles the mind that anyone thinks this is ok ! .

OhcantthInkofaname · 30/06/2024 17:10

This is important and I haven't seen the answer here: But what did he do after he entered your home?

I don't think it is important. They shouldn't have let themselves in my home. Full stop.

I know you're just being silly, but don't give OP ideas like this. I had colleagues struck off due to minor complaints like this, long term workers who were just trying their best for their customers.

I'm not going to complain, as a relative worked for RM for years. Hence being trained to use post person.

There is never a reason to try to open someone's front door unless you think a person inside is in desperate medical need imo. Doesn't matter if they walked in, dropped it in or made themselves lunch. They shouldn't invite themselves into my property without my prior permission.

Especially when the shed right next to them is set up as the safe place to leave parcels.

DD is aware that she can't leave the door open for her friend again. Which makes me really sad, but it's the outcome of yesterday.

Well she’s making it like he made a cup of tea, raided her fridge, had a shit in her sink and kicked the cat. Your guess is as good as anybody’s 😂

fleabites · 30/06/2024 17:14

Where did they go inside your home? How long were they in there?
Or did they simply open the door and put the parcel inside and then leave?

Make sure you and everyone who lives in your home locks the door at all times if you don't want people opening the door and going inside.

tuvamoodyson · 30/06/2024 17:14

So, if you’re so sure you’re not being unreasonable, what exactly is your AIBU?

I don't think it is important. They shouldn't have let themselves in my home. Full stop.

Well it is, it’s:

a) They opened the door, put my parcel inside and closed the door. Saving me a trip to the collection office.
b) They opened the door, had a mooch around my hallway, picked up my posh glass paperweight from Libertys, put their head around the lounge door and fondled my Axeminster, left the parcel and departed.

SparkyBlue · 30/06/2024 17:14

This reminds me of a neighbour of my mother's who complained that her post on one occasion got wet. It was during a period of miserable torrential rain. The postman in question is an absolute gent and has done that route for years and maybe he accidentally dropped the letter or whatever and the rest of the neighbours who normally love a bit of drama or gossip were actually disgusted with her complaining him and all told her so.

trextape · 30/06/2024 17:15

I don't think it is important. oh op

😆

NigelHarmansNewWife · 30/06/2024 17:15

I'm concerned about your daughter's personal safety. Anyone could let themselves in. I'm willing to bet she found the parcel and hadn't heard him ring the doorbell, which led you to review the footage.

NightOwlEarlyBird · 30/06/2024 17:15

So since you're saying it's not important what the postie did, I assume that means they just put the parcel inside and then left?

It really does help. We don't enjoy disturbing people, but it was such a relief to see a note on a door. We had customers who left their windows open so we could drop them through there and everything. I had swollen knuckles on my right hand from knocking on doors hard enough for people to hear, so the relief was physical as well! I think people don't realise how much they carry, and like I said in my last post, we want to clear the round. We WANT to get your mail to you.

Both are uninvited scenarios.

A no different to B.
