The post person entered my house.

I've just seen it on my Ring doorbell.

17yr old DD had left the door unlocked for her friend so she didn't have to come down to let them in. Not uncommon.

Post arrived, including a parcel, during this time. When no one answered the door, the post person tried the handle, opened up the door and came into my home.

Granted, DD shouldn't have left the door unlocked, but it doesn't make what the post person did ok.

Just me who thinks it was completely unreasonable for them to have even tried the handle?!

I'm not going to complain, as a relative worked for RM for years. Hence being trained to use post person.

There is never a reason to try to open someone's front door unless you think a person inside is in desperate medical need imo. Doesn't matter if they walked in, dropped it in or made themselves lunch. They shouldn't invite themselves into my property without my prior permission.

Especially when the shed right next to them is set up as the safe place to leave parcels.

DD is aware that she can't leave the door open for her friend again. Which makes me really sad, but it's the outcome of yesterday.

Did he actually walk in though? It’s quite different to just open the door to quickly drop something inside and fully walking into the house.

If it bothers you so much then just lock your doors. I’m sure he thought he was doing you a favour

Snowpatrolling · 30/06/2024 17:16

Christ I used to leave the back door open for the Hermes man! I miss him!
new postie knows my back door is open if I’m in, he knows I’m hard of hearing, he puts it on my table! 🤷‍♀️

Both are uninvited scenarios.

A no different to B.

Uninvited, but one is genuinely helpful and one is invasive.

Magnastorm · 30/06/2024 17:17

Globules · 30/06/2024 17:11

I don't think it is important. They shouldn't have let themselves in my home. Full stop.

Well, it is though, because fairly obviously there is a huge difference between someone just cracking the door a wee bit to put some post inside and someone going into your fridge and helping themselves to your leftover pizza.

Just keep your door locked if it really bothers you. Don't be the twat who complains about a postie just trying to keep your parcels out of the rain/ out of sight or having to give you a "we missed you" card.

Agree op. Might be worth flagging it up with your local sorting office? I wouldn't give any info that might get the guy in trouble, but a heads up that their people are putting themselves at potential risk maybe?

Kassalah · 30/06/2024 17:17

They may have thought it was a porch.

how big is your house?! how many staircases would she had had to navigate?!

It really does help. We don't enjoy disturbing people, but it was such a relief to see a note on a door. We had customers who left their windows open so we could drop them through there and everything. I had swollen knuckles on my right hand from knocking on doors hard enough for people to hear, so the relief was physical as well! I think people don't realise how much they carry, and like I said in my last post, we want to clear the round. We WANT to get your mail to you.

I'm not disputing that at all.

Just leave it in my shed like I've asked please.

You said yourself that a big notice comes up on the reader.

They are quite different to be fair! Opening a door to slide a package into a hallway and then shutting that door straightaway is very different to having a poo in your toilet and making a cup of tea.

So answer the question - how long does the doorbell footage show the postie was in there for? Was a quick in and out, just long enough to ensure the parcel wasn't in direct view of the door if someone else were to open it and steal it? Or did the postie have time to go in for a shit and a snack?

So, if you’re so sure you’re not being unreasonable, what exactly is your AIBU?

Exactly!

OP: Hey everyone AIBU??

(Almost) everyone: YES!

OP: No I'm not, you're all wrong!

What makes me roll my eyes about the OP is the fact that she happily leaves the door unlocked so often because it's 'not uncommon.' Then throws a massive strop and posts about how outraged she is, because a post-person popped a package into the hallway (after popping in through the UNLOCKED DOOR!)

Don't want people popping in and dropping stuff off inside your hallways? LOCK THE DOORS!!!!!!

Literally facepalming here at the OP!!! 😦

MissScarletInTheBallroom · 30/06/2024 17:19

I would assume that if there's a choice between checking to see whether the door is unlocked and leaving a "sorry you were out" note, they'll check to see whether the door is unlocked.

trextape · 30/06/2024 17:19

put me out of my misery

why check more than 24 hours after this happened?

it’s more than that… the OP not just saying she isn’t unreasonable

but clearly censoring what what answers because she knows the answers will….

Like I've said, I don't see either scenario.as acceptable. Both are someone coming into my house uninvited after trying the handle to see if they could.

Is it your usual postie or is it someone else? They have just had quite a big employment drive, so if it's a newbie, tell them. If it's your regular and you've let them know before, they should know better. Might be time to just stick a temporary note on the door saying 'If no answer, do not open my door. Use the designated safe space instead. Thank you.'

EmberAsh · 30/06/2024 17:21

I don't understand why OP is getting such a hard time.
If the shed is the safe place then why would they even try the door handle.
On this occasion the door was unlocked for a pre-arranged reason but if it wasn't it means the postie is just ignoring preferences and trying every door which seems like a strange way to deliver.
Even if they just dropped it in the hallway, there could have been something personal there. It's an invasion of privacy.

JaneJeffer · 30/06/2024 17:23

trextape · 30/06/2024 16:15

i wonder if DD had left a note for friend saying just let yourself in

but she’s not telling you that!!

Who would leave a hand written note, you’d text..

Mrsttcno1 · 30/06/2024 17:24

Quite obvious from OP’s replies that all this person did was pop the parcel through the door. What an absolute drama over nothing honestly I think some people just love a winge, they haven’t let themselves in, came into your living room and made themselves a cup of tea. And if you genuinely can’t see the difference between that and what they actually did in this situation then you need to give your head a good shake, and lock your doors

I don't think I have a regular. Not seen this one before. There's a variety of women and men who deliver to me.

I'll tape a big sign to the shed "parcel drop off point" 😁

Fluffyshoesandfleece · 30/06/2024 17:25

Ours always leaves parcels in the hall im just happy not to have to rush to the door !

fieldsofbutterflies · 30/06/2024 17:27

mapleriver · 30/06/2024 17:07

Yeah I have OCD and normally check the handles 20 times a day, I'd been home for an hour and was doing something in the garden on the other side of the house hence not locking up yet and didn't expect someone to CHECK MY HANDLE and ENTER MY HOME because of an unlocked door, when a safe place is specified and followed 99.9% of the time. He left them in the middle of the kitchen too, not just on the inside of the door and it icked me out that a stranger had been walking in my house while I was home alone.

Why not lock your door behind you if you feel that way?

I wouldn't want anyone walking in my front door either, so I have one that locks immediately behind me.

Sotiredmjmmy · 30/06/2024 17:27

Did they actually step foot into your house though? It seems very much like they didn’t - do you let them open the letter box? I don’t see the difference, both scenarios they remain on the outside whilst dropping in a letter or a parcel.

If you do have an issue with it then there’s a very simple solution - lock your door

Then I would definitely put up a little note directing them. I know it seems like common sense, but a lot of people lack it. It would save you and your family the fright, and the worker from thinking they're doing the right thing. Everyone's happy then.
