To think that facial enhancements make people look older/worse/ridiculous

DH and I are watching the latest film on Netflix with Nicole Kidman & Zac Effron. We can’t believe how bad they both look with their obvious cosmetic surgery, I Googled to see their ages and was staggered at how young they are compared to how they look!
Why do people do this?
Kathy Bates looks brilliant with little or nothing done.
I just don’t understand this awful trend at all, everywhere you look people resemble waxwork dolls. It’s bloody awful.
P.S The film is dire…don’t bother🙈🙈

You are so right!

Thanksforreading · 29/06/2024 22:59

I watched this today and I barely recognised Nicole Kidman.
Im a beauty therapist, and you would be shocked at the amount of 22 year old girls coming in having had Botox and wants anti ageing facials. It’s ridiculous and their answers for why they do it is because their friends do it!

StarDolphins · 29/06/2024 22:59

I agree. I’m hoping(doubtful) this trend will die off. The noticeable ones look ridiculous & they don’t think they’re getting talked/laughed at but they are.

GoodVibesHere · 29/06/2024 23:00

I agree OP.

JaceLancs · 29/06/2024 23:01

It’s very aging - when I see things like love island I can’t believe how young they actually are as most look way older - people used to have cosmetic work done to look younger!

Moonface31 · 29/06/2024 23:02

Zac Efron had to have his face reconstructed after a bad accident and breaking his jaw.

LakeTiticaca · 29/06/2024 23:12

They look awful and not flattering at all, especially with that "clown mouth".
What's wrong with aging naturally?
Good quality make up is far more flattering, and the turkey neck always gives it away anyway 😆

TempestTost · 29/06/2024 23:13

Yes, I can't say it always looks worse, but it absolutely can and often really does.

Nicole Kidman has looked much older for a while.

I do think it's very difficult for Hollywood women. They are faced with trying to remain sexy looking, or transition into old age kinds of roles, which most don't want to do. And their similar aged male actors don't usually face that choice then, which seems unfair, but frankly is largely down to differences in male and female ageing - once women hit menopause there can be some significant facial changes. They don't necessarily make them look bad, but they do look older.

But I think usually there isn't much point in trying to get around it. The way these treatments come out is just as ageing in its own way.

I agree. DD is nearly 24 and watches Love Island and she looks at least 10 years younger than the contestants of the same age.

I don't think all these artificial enhancements are flattering at all.

I always wondered whether that was like when obvious celebrity cosmetic nose jobs are attributed to a ‘deviated septum.’

Zac Efron had to have his face reconstructed after a bad accident and breaking his jaw.

Even plastic surgeons have defended him saying it's completely plausible that his face changed because of an injury. His smile is now slightly asymmetrical which again, indicates he suffered a severe injury. I think we should stop criticising him for something that was very possibly out of his control.

Justleaveitblankthen · 29/06/2024 23:16

I think when it's over done yes. There are lots of times when the tweaks are clever and subtle.

Not everyone would agree but I think Jennifer Aniston, Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie all may share a Surgeon!
Even the Cloonster had a nose and eye job (check out early Rosanne episodes for proof)

I don't think anyone needs anything at all until early 40's
I looked younger than my age.. Until thereabout🫠

PattyDuckface · 29/06/2024 23:18

Nicole Kidman is old, and all respect due in being so, and we should expect her to look her age... but she's just aged strangely due to interventions.

You can't expect her to look unchanged but the change is maybe a bit uncanny as people who do this don't necessarily look old but rather weird.

Gettingannoyednow · 29/06/2024 23:18

Nicole Kidman is 57. How young should she look?

AgathaX · 29/06/2024 23:24

Nice age bashing thread. Do the old people look any worse than the young people with their huge blow job lips?

TwigletsAndRadishes · 29/06/2024 23:26

I little bit of a nip and tuck or a light touch of Botox and filler can do wonders but quite why all these big celebrities don't seem to be able to quit while they are ahead, I do not know. They seem intent on turning themselves into bloated, puffy-faced monstrosities. It's a sort of collective madness. You'd think they'd look at one another and make a mental note not to get carried away, wouldn't you?

BeardofHagrid · 29/06/2024 23:29

Fillers are cringe, as are the people who call themselves “aesthetic practitioners” after a two day course. Taking a peep at their instagrams is quite eye opening, all they do is promote hatred of women’s natural faces and bodies. For example, I’ve noticed a lot of them will post a selfie of themselves with no eyelash extensions and they’ll write “Looking disgusting with my BALD eyes” or similar. A lot of it is based around being hateful to other women.

And yes, the fillers do make people look old, they attract water and cause the skin to swell. Swelling and stretching is the worst thing that can happen to skin that covers a tight structure like the face, it can’t be unstretched, it just goes slack.

CountryMumof4 · 29/06/2024 23:34

I think there must be a huge amount of pressure on actors to retain their youth for as long as possible to ensure they get certain roles, but I agree it can start to look a bit odd. What concerns me more is people in their late teens/early 20s starting on Botox. A new starter in my office in her early 20s religiously had Botox and lip fillers until she had her two children very close together. She looks absolutely beautiful now that it's all worn off - really natural and pretty. She really didn't need them and I really hope she doesn't go back to them for a good while (although obviously that's entirely her choice)

Zoflorabore · 29/06/2024 23:37

My eldest niece is 23 and has had no work done at all, she doesn’t need it. Her best friend is the same age and have gone through nursery/primary/secondary school together and I know her family well and i was so shocked when I saw her recently.

friend is a lovely looking young woman but she’s had so much work done it looks so unnatural and not like her at all. My niece told me that her friend is really insecure and as she’s never had a boyfriend she thought it was to do with her looks. She’s had her lips done, cheek fillers and Botox. She looks way older than my niece.

I think a lot of it has to do with social media and the constant strive for so called perfection.

Atethehalloweenchocs · 29/06/2024 23:43

There is a woman I know who has lots of botox/fillers/lashes/fake tan. She looks bizarre in real life - just really odd. She probably photographs brilliantly though. For me, I would prefer to have a face that does not make people stare - in a bad way.

flashspeed · 29/06/2024 23:54

I'd like to see a photo of anti tweak women in these threads, to see if aging naturally actually looks more attractive and less freakish, or if it's cope from women who don't want to get botox or filler or tweaks but are scared of their peers getting it and looking frumpy in comparison

PangolinPan · 30/06/2024 00:01

There's a relatively happy medium between nothing done and "way too much".
I'd never have anything done and I'm not particularly good looking but some of the mums at school have gone way too far, with lips large behind anything nature intended, frozen faces and filled cheeks. I'd really rather be called a frump than have so much foreign matter in my body and barely able to move my mouth to form words, let alone smile or frown.

DappledThings · 30/06/2024 00:05

Watched Leave the World Behind last weekend and I commented on how good Julia Roberts looks and that's because she doesn't appear to have had anything done. If she has done it's been done far better than someone like Courtney Cox who looks awful

Deebee90 · 30/06/2024 00:12

omg that film, they’ve both had so much work done it’s embarrassing. He’s my age I think and looked about 45 . Some facial improvements can work but some definitely don’t,

bellamountain · 30/06/2024 00:41

It's definitely this current trend for fillers and Botox. Kristen Davies I think has seen the light and very very fortunate for her, has been able to go back to her proper face and looks amazing. Sarah Jessica Parker looks great because she's stayed true to herself. I'm hoping Jennifer Aniston ditches the fillers.
