To think that facial enhancements make people look older/worse/ridiculous

DH and I are watching the latest film on Netflix with Nicole Kidman & Zac Effron. We can’t believe how bad they both look with their obvious cosmetic surgery, I Googled to see their ages and was staggered at how young they are compared to how they look!
Why do people do this?
Kathy Bates looks brilliant with little or nothing done.
I just don’t understand this awful trend at all, everywhere you look people resemble waxwork dolls. It’s bloody awful.
P.S The film is dire…don’t bother🙈🙈

Is the mismatch between face and body, and even posture, that makes it look off too. I hate my eye bags. They're genetic and I have very pale skin and a long nose that makes them more pronounced. But if I got them 'fixed', there would be something else I didn't like.

I watched the Breeders on Glastonbury. It was brilliant; a bunch of women looking like middle aged women playing music. That's what I want to age like.

Men do look older with their wrinkles, grey or balding hair, and thick waistlines.
Imagine getting to a certain age and not being able to get work unless you conform to having work done.

I was watching a film with Russel Crowe in the other night, who is huge and wrinkly and clearly has had no work done 😄, and yet still has no problem being cast for roles. I thought at the time, how many leading ladies who don’t get work done or conform still get decent roles and stay popular? Just doesn’t happen.

Edited

He doesn't get the same kind of romantic lead roles though, he gets older fat man roles.

He's a talented actor, so people still want him for that.

There are actresses who transition into the equivalent of those kinds of roles. Or men and women who get "older attractive woman/man" roles if they've aged a little better than Crowe.

There are actually plenty of male and female acting parts that are just pretty normal looking, fat, bald, wrinkly, whatever. There is a lot of work in those kinds of roles, but usually not the a-list ones carrying a big Hollywood film.

Actors like Cruise and Kidman choose not to take roles like that. They seem to want to remain in something closer to the roles they had when they were younger.

YANBU, it makes me so happy to see naturally ageing women, Paulina Porizgova is a prime example.

I think that's a dogmatic moral statement rather than reflecting reality.

The face and hair can change very quickly over a few years with menopause. It's a noticeable change for many, and we notice change. Women also typically have thinner skin than men. All other things being equal the trajectory is not the same.

And lots of men are no lookers to start with, and get a lot fatter and uglier once they are over 45. More men are overweight than women these days, and they don't tend to look after their skin either.

YellowHairband · 30/06/2024 22:16

I wonder how many of the women bashing filler and Botox are just feeling a type of way because these procedures came along when it was already too late for them to benefit from the preventative effects?

No, I've just turned 32.

I've also just finished Invisalign so have no specific moral stance against cosmetic stuff. I just think that fillers and Botox often look very odd.

I'm sure it's possible to have them done very subtly so that no one can really tell for sure. But a lot of people do seem to keep going without knowing when to stop.

decionsdecisions62 · 30/06/2024 22:41

I couldn't actually watch NK in her last film as she couldn't get her face into normal positions to cry and laugh and ended up looking like a gargoyle! When will they ever learn. I'm 57 and there's absolutely no way I want fish lips or a contorted face!

Well, yes. Lots of people are just average or sometimes even quite ugly. I'm not sure that is really weighted toward women or men in particular.

My daughter thinks the new season of Love Island is an anti-filler/botox/teeth advert as they look so ridiculously bad and old for young girls 😟.

Hmm, lots of cope in this thread. I wonder how many of the women bashing filler and Botox are just feeling a type of way because these procedures came along when it was already too late for them to benefit from the preventative effects? It's much easier to prevent wrinkles with Botox than to try to get rid of them when they are already etched in. The ignorance and judgement in this thread is astounding, spouting off about things you don't understand just to make yourself feel better about what you see when you look in the mirror. You probably see people every day who have had work done and you'd have no idea - it's only obvious when it's done poorly.

This is so funny 😃😃.

At 43 I'm still smiling at what I see in the mirror, because I'm doing very well, thanks. Not a line nor wrinkle, and I love the streaks of grey coming through, so I'm contemplating just letting them be 🤷🏾‍♀️.

I agree. DD and I are incredulous at how plastic these people look.

Grundellsclearing99 · 01/07/2024 11:53

I don't normally comment on looks, but I remember idly watching an episode of "Designated Survivor" one day and being truly shocked by how bizarre the main players, Keifer Sutherland and Natascha McElhone, looked when their faces turned to the side. They are both really attractive individuals but oh dear what have they done to their faces? It's such a shame but was so off-putting I switched over. Both looked a bit like Punch and Judy with some sort of implants in their chins and cheekbones. They were so beautiful before, it's so sad, it must he incredibly hard living in that world where you feel pressured in to it. It never looks good imo. I would far rather see wrinkles! I think we all need Hollywood directors to make a stand!

Harriet on love island looks like a drag queen- a caricature !

AmusedMaker · 03/07/2024 07:29

Anything is better than looking old for some people.

Doesn't she just.

She is the same age as DD who looks about 15 compared to her. DD always has to have ID on her because she looks so young.

FunIsland · 03/07/2024 07:53

I think someone upthread made an excellent point which is that for some of these people, they want it to be obvious that they’ve had work done. It’s not my cup of tea at all and it makes me really sad to see people (in my opinion) ruin their faces but I imagine it’s the same as when people who don’t like tattoos see my tattoos (which I love).

I still need to know what ‘cope’ is / means.

LordPercyPercy · 03/07/2024 08:47

I've just come across the trend for lip lifts
Why?! They make people look like Shih Tsus!

Whatdoido123456 · 03/07/2024 08:50

Pumping your face full of fillers and other chemicals whilst vaping, drinking energy drinks, eating ultra processed foods and using sunbeds is literal self abuse.

Covetthee · 03/07/2024 09:23

There are definitely people out there that like that look though.

Megan fox being one of them, she was on a recent podcast and said she likes the look she has going on, whereas someone like jessica alba- uses these treatments to stay fresh.

it can definitely be done in a tasteful way, esp if you have the money.

BowlOfNoodles · 03/07/2024 09:25

No badly done work looks ridiculous when done correctly you can't tell!

BowlOfNoodles · 03/07/2024 09:28

My friend lost 40lb and it made her look haggard she went and got cheek filler it was like she'd been to see a wizzard looks absolutely incredible completely restored the hollowing weightless caused!

Koko83 · 03/07/2024 09:58

Zac efron has a bit of a squint smile and jaw though - so I think the injury thing is plausible?
I think he has enough money that if he got cosmetic surgery it would be more even!
I split my chin years ago and had stitches and for years you could never tell - but more recently I notice it slighting sticking out more than the other side. Especially when I smile. It’s not that big but it was very minor injury - so i guess a major injury would be more obvious?

Ishouldkoko · 06/07/2024 23:11

I just watched this film and tried searching for a thread about it. Surprised there's only this one. What a rubbish film. They were such a mismatched couple and they just looked bizarre together. It was odd the film focused on bad scripts/film ideas, yet the actual film was just as bad. I don't want to comment about their looks but the surgery hasn't done them any favours, neither has this film. Agree with the posts about Kathy, she looked great

It's literally fear plastered over someone's face.
Fear of looking like those frumpy 'other' women.
Fear of normality.
Fear of what you cannot control.
Fear of aging.
Fear of nature.
Fear of death.
