To think that facial enhancements make people look older/worse/ridiculous

DH and I are watching the latest film on Netflix with Nicole Kidman & Zac Effron. We can’t believe how bad they both look with their obvious cosmetic surgery, I Googled to see their ages and was staggered at how young they are compared to how they look!
Why do people do this?
Kathy Bates looks brilliant with little or nothing done.
I just don’t understand this awful trend at all, everywhere you look people resemble waxwork dolls. It’s bloody awful.
P.S The film is dire…don’t bother🙈🙈

You always get people saying theirs is so subtle and you can’t tell etc. I think in 99% of cases you can tell. Especially when they have their lips done. You can spot it a mile off. No friend is going to ever tell you that they can tell etc.

I love comments like this. Of course we can't always tell. The ones we can't tell are the ones we don't know about.

I have met colleagues and friends who have had things done and told me and I genuinely had no idea. I have also seen many many women who have had v obvious things done that look terrible.

I find it particularly sad with young women. Especially because skin care and make up is so good these days small problems are easily concealed.

shup · 30/06/2024 09:05

I'm surprised that actors who rely on their expressions to do their job are resorting to fillers etc which stop their faces being expressive. It was so distracting, I spent most of the film thinking how weird they both looked rather than concentrating on the film. It's not a great film but the actress who played the daughter stood out more partly because she was more natural.
Maybe they can get away with minimal interventions but the lips nearly always go too far.
I doubt Harriet Walter would be a better actress or more attractive with ridiculous lip fillers. Beautiful and expressive with wrinkles.

Nice age bashing thread. Do the old people look any worse than the young people with their huge blow job lips?

Not meant to age bashing at all. I started the thread and I’m 51.
I was watching a movie and it really highlighted it to me. I completely agree that young people with lip fillers etc look bloody awful too.

Hmm, lots of cope in this thread. I wonder how many of the women bashing filler and Botox are just feeling a type of way because these procedures came along when it was already too late for them to benefit from the preventative effects? It's much easier to prevent wrinkles with Botox than to try to get rid of them when they are already etched in. The ignorance and judgement in this thread is astounding, spouting off about things you don't understand just to make yourself feel better about what you see when you look in the mirror. You probably see people every day who have had work done and you'd have no idea - it's only obvious when it's done poorly.

Not me, I’m pretty comfortable with how I look, and I appreciate how my friends look too. We compliment each other all the time on new clothes, hair etc. I only wish I’d had the confidence I do now when I was younger, and thank God Botox wasn’t freely available so we didn’t feel under pressure to have it.

There's a BBC reporter, Gary something, and if he were a woman he would have been given the elbow a decade ago.

Gary O'Donoghue is an excellent journalist. He's also blind. Worrying about how he looks is probably low on his agenda.

I watched Civil War recently and was mesmerised by Kirsten Dunst. She looks like a totally normal woman, no make up at all and the character is often quite grumpy looking but I just couldn't take my eyes off her, she's absolutely beautiful! It took me ages to figure out why I was so taken by her then realised she just looks completely natural. I'm so pleased she's still a huge star and doesn't seem to have gone down the route of tweakments/ surgery, even despite having been a child star.

Much of this post is scientifically ignorant. There is no such thing as preventative procedures for wrinkles. The muscles of the face do work and need to work exactly the same as muscles in the rest of the body. When prevented from moving and exercising, they atrophy. Fact. These young women will have a choice of either prematurely decrepit faces or increasing need of further cosmetic remedy - the industry is creating its life long dependent clientele. As with most other areas, it is a superb marketing strategy of creating need where there was none.

It's definitely this current trend for fillers and Botox. Kristen Davies I think has seen the light and very very fortunate for her, has been able to go back to her proper face and looks amazing. Sarah Jessica Parker looks great because she's stayed true to herself. I'm hoping Jennifer Aniston ditches the fillers.

I hate to break it to you, but SJP had a fabulous deep plane facelift. I expect that Kristin Davis has been told to lay off the filler so she can have one as well.

MoonshineSon · 30/06/2024 09:12

It is sad that it has got to a point where it's noticeable and notable who hasn't had work done.
Luckily some of the best actors haven't like Judi Dench, Jodie Foster, Meryl Streep etc and they look amazing and are still getting lots of roles. In part I imagine because they can still act so well as they can move their faces.

AuntieJoyce · 30/06/2024 09:13

HazelLion · 30/06/2024 08:59

I think it's a status thing among a certain subset of women (Real Housewives for example) to have obvious cosmetic work. It's another form of conspicuous consumption. They don't necessarily want to look natural.

This is definitely happening at the younger end. I do wonder myself what will happen when the trend for big lips finishes because surely some of these lips must’ve stretched a lot given the size they have got to.

anunlikelyseahorse · 30/06/2024 09:13

I'm surprised men find it an attractive look. Most of the time it looks alien 👽
The big lips, the removal of buccal fat, and then that weird shiny look never looks good.
If it's so subtle you can't see it, then why bother? And if you can see it, it looks odd. I also think in another 20-30 years they'll be stories about the negative health impact of the cosmetic procedures longer term. It's still very much in its infancy.

Yes I'd rather watch Gary than Kay Burley or Beth Rigby (it's the hair that distracts me as it just doesn't move).

And another one. Judi Dench has absolutely had a facelift.

That's kind of ageist chicken. I'm glad you're happy though with the 😂 faces. If you're happy with your choice and think little of people on here then you could just stop reading and go and live out your happy, youthful existence complete with botox and fillers. No need to start name calling now is there?

I'm 40 btw before you dismiss me for my age Hmm

Tagyoureit · 30/06/2024 09:16

Some procedures are aging.

Chloe Brocket out of towie is 23 but looks so much older due to all the fillers etc.

But each to their own.
If I had the money, I'd have my double chin, mummy tummy tuck, boobs and bingo wings done.

So essentially you ("you" also encompassing the majority of posters on this thread( can dish it out but not take it. Shitting on women who have had work is fine and dandy, but you are beyond reproach and can't be judged yourself. Ok.

Pussycat22 · 30/06/2024 09:19

planAplanB, perhaps there should be more stringent legal regulations and accountability.God knows what they will look like in the future.

cookiebee · 30/06/2024 09:20

Any form of cosmetic surgery has not reached the level where it actually looks good or has been perfected. I get why people do it it, I really do, but you can always tell. Hair transplants/tattoos, lip fillers, Botox, it’s just not been perfected.

Aging can not be prevented in anyway, our bodies physically change, anyone having ‘preventative’ Botox to future proof ageing, your skin might look smooth, but it will still sag, because that change is hormonal, our skeletal structure actually changes, our natural fat and collagen dissipates, we can’t hide these things, anyone who thinks they look ten years younger past the age of 40, you don’t, whatever people tell you, your body shows its age.

these days I just make sure my clothes are clean, look in the mirror to make sure I don’t have toothpaste smeared on my face and just live. I lost all my vanity in my late 30s, it’s liberating. Also not to put a depressing spin on it, but if you make it to any older age with reasonable health count yourself lucky, MANY do not!

SJP does look great for her age and natural. KD didn't look great in that first series of and just like that. I wonder if the fillers look mad (cheap, less invasive option) and the face lifts if well done can look great.

I think if I was really interested in looking young, i woudn't bother with the fillers and botox and would save up for a face lift instead. (I won't though as too invasive/scary for me)

Conniebygaslight · 30/06/2024 09:22

My GFs range from 43 to 56, none have had any work done as far as I know. All professional women and all look great. I’m 51 and can’t imagine going down the surgery route at all. I don’t think it improves anything.

Very true. My mum died young under general anaesthetic (as I said up thread). Honestly, I'm happy to grow older. I don't want to attract a partner really or compete with my friends over looking young or sexy. As long as I look presentable and am healthy, I'm happy. There really are so many more important things in my life than how I look. People scoff at that and don't believe it can be true but I honestly don't think I'm the one being weird there 🤷‍♀️

Oh no, you've misunderstood completely. I can "take it" as well as "dish it out", but I don't have to resort to bigotry and personal attacks to make my point. Hope that clarifies.
