To wonder when the excess of dogs will die down

There's so much shit everywhere

There are so many feral horrible dogs pissing on front doors or prams or shop displays and barking terrifyingly at kids

I am sick of them!!!!! Is this it or will people learn their post COVID lesson and only get pets they can actually handle in the future?

Yes I agree. It's not just the people being killed, it's all the injuries. Must cost the NHS so much dealing with them.

No we can't get rid of all risk but you can do things to reduce the key ones. That's why we have safeguarding rules for children, rules for the road, and why we need stricter rules on pet ownership (and dog ownership in particular).

"The cost to the NHS is an estimated £71 million. 60 people have died in dog attacks in the UK since 2000. There are 2,500-3,000 dog bites to postmen and women a year. In the past five years, 1,000 postmen and women have had fingers bitten off/amputated as a result of dog attacks through letterboxes."

You also have to consider the other side of the coin: the exercise, fresh air, conpanionship and social contacts that people get as a result of their dogs, which all do a vast amount for their health.

How on earth do the smart people without mutts ever get exercise, fresh air and companionship?! Time enough that we get people to be a little more independent, and not rely on a stinky species for the above. If we can walk at all, we are all perfectly capable of going for a walk without a dog. If people didn't have dogs, they'd HAVE to put more effort in to human relationships and the world would be a better place all round.
Dogs to a lot of detriment to MY health - and I am not the only person who is allergic.

All of these things are desirable, yes, and all are perfectly possible without a dog being involved.

Perhaps they'll never 'die down'.

Perhaps it's here to stay.

OonaStubbs · 24/07/2024 20:39

Robot dogs are coming soon so people will be able to take them for walks instead.

Are you on the wind up on this thread?

vodkaredbullgirl · 24/07/2024 20:46

You won't catch me talking baby talk to my dogs, they would think I was nuts lol

brrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr · 24/07/2024 23:43

Maybe all dogs a toddler couldn’t beat in a fight could have a big red button on their collar which delivers an instantly fatal dose of something if hit. That way a psycho dog
could be stopped.

Maybe all men a woman couldn’t beat in a fight could have a big red button on their belt which delivers an instantly fatal dose of something if hit. That way a psycho man

Fixed that for you. More relevant.

Irresponsible owners are the problem, not dogs. Some of the comments in this thread are really derogatory and gross about animals which are nothing but kind and loving. As for having a problem with them being in pubs, that’s just bizarre to me. Dogs in pubs is the most normal thing ever — though I live in the country and everyone brings their dogs to the pub. You might find them annoying but plenty of people disagree. On the other hand, plenty of people find children in eating establishments really annoying. Doesn’t mean they deserve vile comments.

ShagratandGorbag4ever · 24/07/2024 19:57

Both you and @ICanNeverRememberPasswords are missing the point that people go out with their dogs who would otherwise not get the exercise: their obligation to walk the dog gets them out whatever the weather. They meet people out walking and strike up friendships. For people who live alone, a dog can provide company.

If you don't like dogs, you're going to struggle to understand how much a well-trained and happy dog can enrich your life.

vivainsomnia · 25/07/2024 08:08

No one should be getting mauled to death by a domestic pet
Sadly, a common reason for dogs becoming aggressive is that they themselves were subject to ongoing abuse by their owner and one day, they snap. Not all, but all too common. Some owners think that dogs are punch bags.

We should also ban men, bikes, power tools and cars as the injury and death rates are much higher as a result of these things than as a result of dogs.

What an asinine comment. Society needs men, bikes/cars and tools. I'd push for separate lanes for cars and bikes, and the roads can definitely be made safer. I'd also push for zero leniency when a man hurts a woman.
Dogs are unnecessary. Postal workers don't deserve to have fingers chewed off during the course of their day, people shouldn't carry scars because of dogs.

By the amount of people who have dogs, work with dogs and have a very real need for them for their mental health, society would disagree with you.

Also, not an asinine comment when you were stating dogs should be banned because of the cost to the NHS. If we’re basing off that, then all the things I have stated should also be banned, along with cigarettes, alcohol, junk food, sedentary working styles… etc etc

I agree, no one should be injured through the behaviour of other humans. Not adequately training their pet also slots into this.

Again, a human failing, same as cyclist s not being safe on normal roads, not an animal one.

sunglassesonthetable · 25/07/2024 09:52

Yeah " Banning Dogs " is not an asinine comment.

Good luck with that one - anywhere in the world.

I agree with banning cigarettes and alcohol, and I'd happily ban McDonalds/KFC and coke. There is no need for either. You can't ban vehicles, unless you really expect people to stay within a few miles' radius of their home, which is wholly unrealistic. I don't think it is unrealistic to change the way people think about dogs, and promote better health and mental health through other ways, more human social relations, NOT relying on another species for comfort and exercise.

You can't train out inherent traits in dogs. They can and do flip.

They've managed very well without dogs in many Muslim countries, where dogs are seen as dirty. We have a blindness here as a country, and have been brainwashed into accepting these filthy animals into our homes, in cafes, in shops, in cinemas. We think nothing of them pissing on the streets. Imagine if humans did that. We'd think it's gross, which it is. Yet dogs get a pass.

SemperIdem · 25/07/2024 11:31

OptimismvsRealism · 02/07/2024 08:51

I have a beautiful poppy on my garden wall and, once again, some twat has let their dog piss RIGHT on it. Not even anywhere else on the wall. All over the one huge flower

Extinction2dogs.

You’re very intense.

Do you usually get so obsessively angry or is this an unusual behaviour for you?

Many of those countries have wild dogs, which are indeed both dirty and dangerous.

Not unrealistic?

Keep going @ICanNeverRememberPasswords .

You may have extreme views about a species that have been domesticated for millennia - so be it. You're entitled to them of course.

But yep it's VERY UNREALISTIC 😂

sunglassesonthetable · 25/07/2024 11:45

Do I feel " brainwashed" into accepting a dog into my home?

Nah I just like it.
