To wonder when the excess of dogs will die down

There's so much shit everywhere

There are so many feral horrible dogs pissing on front doors or prams or shop displays and barking terrifyingly at kids

I am sick of them!!!!! Is this it or will people learn their post COVID lesson and only get pets they can actually handle in the future?

Again, the problem is feckless dog owners, exacerbated by some folk having taken on "extra" animals during lockdown.

Just in from cutting the exterior of the side boundary hedge. (Having some orange juice before I clear up. Can only manage so much at a time at my age and condition.)

Had to avoid dog mess on the grass verge while doing the work. So sick of it. One lot au naturel and the other bagged. If they're going to be performative and bag it, could the owner not at least take it home?

A couple of dogs only refrained from piddling on the hedge while I was working because the noise of the hedgecutter got closer to them.

Yes, I do know that other animals piddle and defecate in the wild. The problem with the dogs is that they actively add to one another's mess. I'm sick of dealing with bald spots in the hedge and dying flowers caused by an excess of nitrogen. (Apparently that's why dog urine is bad for plants.)

I'll be wearing disposable gloves when I pick up the clippings.

Hopefully they can all be rounded up & euthanised before you set off, freeing you to do something more useful with your time & energy.

No, my job so hardly a waste of my time. The problem with this particular country is that they won’t euthanise humanely. It will likely be bashing of the head or IV poisoning. Got a week in Turkey (with a small team)and then hoping for a volunteer spot in Africa with some wildlife. I often wonder why people have no compassion for animals…

We should have a referendum on dogs in this country. They could call it Dogsxit.

Notaflippinclue · 01/07/2024 18:53

Please don't move some of your Turkish strays to UK - we are full

Once the dogs are neutered, do you move them to a refuge?

I know… If only we all try just a little. It’s what I was thinking, if we just let things go that really don’t affect us. The dogs nor the people, the OP was watching didn’t bother her or affect her life in that moment she thought it was better to start a post that would divide people even further.. we already live in a world with so much horror/anguish this thread wasn’t going to be helpful or solution driven.. it just serves to rile people up even more than they already are - Why cause more upset I suppose. I realise i didn’t articulate myself well and I really should be getting ready for work! X

They will be shipped over here from Turkey dog rescues I’m sure, just to add to more animals in this country.

yes. They will be arriving to where the procedures will happen.. we will monitor afterwards 3-5 days to ensure no infections and they are healing nicely, then will be taken to these sanctuaries where the local volunteers will make careful introductions to their pack mates. It’s going to be my first time on a site like this and I imagine due to the deadline looming it might be a bit more rushed/pressurised than I expect.

When I read this reply I thought you meant you were planning to humanely euthanise the feral canines. I then read further & realised that they will instead be neutered. No doubt because your organisation is confident that there are no end of dopey twits over here willing to pay good money for an addled old feral dog. . . as if we dont have enough of the flipping things already!!
(I wish you well in Africa, I hope you have a great time & please stay safe, I'm sure your folks will worry about you)

WearyAuldWumman · 01/07/2024 21:19

I've just finished tidying up and had to step round yet more dog mess on the verge.

There are definitely more dogs round here since Covid: I'm seeing more and more couples walking with an animal each. Mostly large dogs and I'm not aware of seeing in mongrels. I don't know how they can afford the feed and vet bills: I guess that they just prioritise.

likethislikethat · 01/07/2024 21:56

Kill them all, probably half the owners too.

And this is why a lot of folks prefer animals to people.

When will people stop breeding? There are screaming kids everywhere, there are nappys left on the beach, prams in the way in shops, prams taking disabled spaces,
Let people live how they want just cause you don't like dogs doesn't mean everyone else has too

Who are you to judge what people should spend their time and energy on?

How are you defining useful?

I have a yappy dog and it drives me insane. He is only a puppy but training a dog that loves the sound of his own voice is a nightmare to reign in albeit I trying my very hardest! Gggrrr…however…no poopies in my garden!

Teach him to bark on command and then teach him to shush.
Then when he barks you can tell him to shush and reward him.

In Spain I've seen owners wash the piss off walls but here owners just leave it as though we're all supposed to accept the inevitability of dog piss everywhere. It's madness.

In Spain a lot of dogs aren't neutered, a lot of dogs are hung from trees to die and some dogs also have their feet cut off and left to die, so I wouldn't say overall it's a role model country.

I will try this…he is a mini dachshund so quite well renowned for it lols

ACynicalDad · 02/07/2024 08:49

I think with more people working from home and cost of living meaning people have babies later the number of dogs around will stay high for a long time to come.

OptimismvsRealism · 02/07/2024 08:51

I have a beautiful poppy on my garden wall and, once again, some twat has let their dog piss RIGHT on it. Not even anywhere else on the wall. All over the one huge flower

Honestly I don't care. It annoys me less than the expectation that I just accept my stuff being covered in excrement and effluvia.
