Unfortunately I can't link to her clip, but she's a star and a hero. She pinned him down and cut through the "twaddle". I am a swing voter and would have been proud of a mntter holding any mp to account on an important issue like Jane did. Jane is/was even trending on twitter.

I actually appreciate him saying he wants to treat everyone with dignity and respect. That I like about him. I think I actually believe him on that. What I can’t get past is that he can’t guarantee women’s safety in spite of this.

I agree, I think we need to be careful not to demonise Starmer. It's all too easy to rule him out because of this issue without seeing his potential in all areas. I hope (and hope is all we can have at this time, because he's never been tested as PM) that he will deliver more good for the country than if we allow Tories to continue the 14 years of damage they've already done.

I see him as someone who will probably have to change his perspective, through the pressure of public opinion, through people like MN-Jane. Just because someone changes their mind, doesn't have to be a bad thing. The trans debate and lobby is a very new phenomenon globally, government policy and legislation on which it's based is only just beginning to be formed and matured.

it does seem like Hobsons Choice, no party will give us everything, and I'm not convinced that the past 14 years under Tory government has shifted the dial on women's rights, particular when you think that women are having to turn their backs on promising careers because of extortionate child care costs. How is that good for Women's Rights in the workplace.

It's not a new phenomenon.
It's been going by my best estimate since the 1960s.

Certainly in the 80s was huge signs this was coming. Then in 2004 the GRA came into being, very quietly. So more than 20 years notice this was coming, plenty of women tried to tell y'all, but collective you decided we were stupid and didnt have a clue and beeee kiiiiind. Well this is where it gets you.

Your careers will be taken by men who dont need and will never need maternity, time off for sick children, gynae issues, school holiday time off, etc ad infinitum.

Best of all, they'll count as "women" in the stats. Hey presto!! "Gender equality".

Trebles all round

So your board will be all male, but half will 'identify as women' so you're all sorted 🤪

TheKeatingFive · 29/06/2024 22:04

He said yes he will protect biological women in women's spaces.

But if men can legally be 'biological women' where does that get anyone?

He's actually said he will protect biological women in safe spaces with only sparse detail of what these safe spaces are, however, toilets and changing rooms are never mentioned as potential safe spaces.

Plus he won't address the question of where holders of GRCs are allowed access. Nor will he address the carnage of the EqA's 'gender reassignment' clause.

GailBlancheViola · 29/06/2024 22:19

But he will make the GRC easier to obtain, why? And he will remove the rights of Trans Widows by taking out the Spousal Exit Clause.

Striking a real blow for women's rights there Starmer. (sarcasm in case there is any doubt)

This is really shocking.

Also, just so everyone is aware. When they negotiated the GRA, they quietly ring fenced the ONE benefit women could have taken from men.

Family estates entailed down the male line are exempt from any implications of the GRA. Not one single female right was protected in the same way.

Let that sink in ...

Forced marriage and everything goes to the men.

#progressive

It was ever thus.

I agree. I cannot see this approach surviving even a full term. Not when his MPs have female constituents lobbying them regularly.

He may come to regret aligning so closely with the tiny “traumatised” minority.

borntobequiet · 29/06/2024 22:32

"Constituencies with relatively higher numbers of over-50s, homeowners and people of white ethnicity are key to Labour’s hopes of winning a majority at the election, Guardian analysis suggests.

So lots of Mail, Express, possibly Times and Telegraph readers. Hmmm.

Yep, eldest male changes gender, gets the GRC, changes the marker on his Birth Certificate to Female, ah but not when landed estates and titles are on the line then he is very definitely, absolutely, without any shadow of a doubt still male.

And this isn't and always has been a Men's Rights Charter? Dream on.

FlirtsWithRhinos · 29/06/2024 21:15

Abusive men, and not-quite-abusive-but-entitled men, rely on women not wanting to be rude and not wanting to be seen as arrogant when they talk over us and push over our boundaries. We try and find nice ways to say "stop, I know what you are doing and I do not accept it" because we know, we know, that anything other than the sweetest of expressions gets flung back at us, turned into our problem. "I'm just being friendly love" "It's only a joke" "he'd be nicer to you if you were nicer to him"

We are so used to this being the way it is we don't even notice it. We see the woman being rude to the man but not his rudeness in treating her as a fool and expecting her to let him. We know he is twaddling on yet still think she owes him the courtesy of alllowing him to finish his twaddle before she calls it out.

Was I the only one a bit annoyed because Jane kept interrupting Kier so I didn't really get to hear his answer?

Win, win. Am I rite?

Ereshkigalangcleg · 29/06/2024 22:39

He will, he will show every person in this country with dignity and respect.

Sure.

ExitPursuedByABare · 29/06/2024 22:39

@Riversideandrelax

yes. You are.

Ereshkigalangcleg · 29/06/2024 22:41

She interrupted him (heaven forbid!) because he was about to wheel out the same old scripted non answer.

No plenty of women are quite irritated that a pesky woman didn't allow slippery Starmer to run the clock down without answering her very simple question.

If you're really interested in his answer he has been asked again, without interruption.

FOJN · 29/06/2024 21:30

Gosh if only we'd suggested that earlier. So many feminists will be feeling quite stupid about now.

Listen up ladiesSparti has the solution to all our concerns.

Tell me you only took an interest in this issue 5 minutes ago with saying you only took an interest in this issue 5 minutes ago.

I haven’t put forward a solution. I’m stating what he’s said he will do. And that it seems sensible to me. And that anything he said in that situation, other than completely buying in to an ‘either/or’ narrative would have been used against him.

This bullying, horrible way of engaging in the conversation puts me off being part of this campaign. As a woman and a feminist I am concerned, but it’s not black and white. This vitriolic and toxic way of engaging makes me not want to be associated with it. Which means I’m less likely to talk about it IRL. You are not doing yourself any favours engaging in this angry and aggressive way.

Sparticusoctopus · 29/06/2024 23:00

ExitPursuedByABare · 29/06/2024 22:39

@Riversideandrelax

yes. You are.

No, she’s not. Lots have said the same. Don’t tell us what we think or what we should think. You don’t represent 51% of the population, you don’t represent me. I’m pretty embarrassed by the tone of this thread. I’m proud to be a woman and I am proud to be a feminist. I’m not proud of how this issue is being approached by some. It’s such an important one and this angry toxic rhetoric doesn’t help.

JaneVapeman · 29/06/2024 23:03

@Riversideandrelax only if it's the first time you have heard him answer
