Biden Trump debate- they must get rid of Biden now?

Biden looked so frail and incoherant at times that this must be the end of his Presidency very soon.
How have the Democrats not faced this sooner and selected someone else, I don't understand why they have let this go on for so long.
He had to be helped off the stage by his wife and it seems like elder abuse.

I don’t agree this is elder abuse. Nobody is abusing him

FWIW I'm not sure either, but I believe the argument is that if he's not got full capacity the party were unkind to nominate him at all, and that his loved ones should step up to persuade him this really isn't a good idea

That said they can't exactly stop him, and for all we know Jill might put the kudos of being First Lady higher than concern for her husband

I really doubt that of Jill Biden tbh.

Watching Biden on CNN now, live from North Carolina. He isn’t going anywhere … Even though he really should. I like Biden. But he won’t win in November. The democrats are handing the presidency to Donald Trump on a silver platter. They should replace Biden, today, with a young energetic white guy that can WIN these elections (no chance a woman or non white person can do this, at this point, unfortunately). The Democrats are letting Trump win … I can’t believe they don’t see this (or if they do: why they don’t take action!) It could be disastrous for us all, also on this side of the world, if Trump wins and no democrat seems to be trying to prevent it. What a total and utter disaster.

Mummyratbag · 28/06/2024 18:49

I feel for Biden, he only wanted to do one term. The pressure of being POTUS certainly seems to age presidents far faster than the years they are in power.

It's very depressing to think a convicted felon would be elected, but I think a rich old white man would probably win over a woman of colour, which is so many types of wrong.

The implications to NATO and potential war in Europe make me so mad. Allied troops paid with their lives in American lead wars. I'm not sure Trump would repay the loyalty if Russia keeps marching west.

How do you replace someone who won the Democratic nomination at the ballot box in March? It’s not the Tory party…

Ionacat · 28/06/2024 18:55

It will come down to the big democrat donors. If they decide he is a liability, then pressure will be put on him to stand down. You have to have huge amounts of money to run as US president and if they start to withdraw their support then the writing is on the wall. Several of the US news sites are reporting that the donors and top officials are privately discussing it and looking at options. They can’t really do anything until August and if he keeps crashing like last night then you can bet those discussions will up a notch. However the democrats are likely to be screwed either way - a new candidate now won’t have had the months of exposure that Trump has had and would have to quickly win over swing states. Kamala Harris isn’t an option as she’s black and a woman - double whammy of misogyny and racism.

deeahgwitch · 28/06/2024 19:23

I couldn't watch it as I knew it would be aanother car crash moment for Joe Biden.
So sad that his Presidential term will be remembered for his cognitive decline

How can his loved ones do that to him ?
Jill, Ashley, his 3 siblings Mary Valerie, Jim and Frank. Sad

I think it's cruel.
He should have been allowed to retire gracefully.

GrouachMacbeth · 28/06/2024 20:01

Biden did not win the presidential election - Donald Trump lost. There was a strong campaign to defeat Trump and it took a great deal of pushing to get a majority to vote against Trump.
Trump may not have been who a certain political class or media class wanted - like the St George waving "not quite Our People". No wonder these who feel ignored tend towards those we may feel are "not the sort of people we would like to have to dinner".

I don't think it's just Americans that should be concerned
😱😱😱

Yes, I am British and I remember walking with an American Mum on the school run who was utterly depressed when he first got in and another British Dad who is well educated, when the American Mum walked off, I commented on how depressing it was and he replied, ‘yes, for her it is and her family in America, we just have to be grateful that we aren’t in the U.S.’ I was completely astounded that this educated Brit, did not appear to have any comprehension of the significance for the world of who the US president is!

There'll be a mechanism but first things first they have to face the reality it needs to happen. They seem to be in denial at the moment and wasting precious time. I'd have thought Kamala Harris is the only option at this stage. She needs to start getting out there.

They have made it very difficult for themselves because Biden "owns" the delegates. There is no obvious way to get rid of him if he doesn't want to go.

Odd thing to say...Kamala Harris really isn't very good but if Michelle Obama was the candidate being black and a woman would hardly be a disadvantage.

Loads of Americans hate Michelle. With a passion. It’s disgusting.

EdithBond · 28/06/2024 20:23

Worth remembering Biden (81) is only 3.5 years older than Trump (78). So, if Biden’s too old, surely that means Trump is too?

Surely, it’s health rather than age that’s key. Though, every other US president has finished their term in their 50s or 60s, other than Reagan (77) and Eisenhower (70).

And any President can die in the job, whatever their age. As Joe Biden knows only too well, as do Caroline and Patrick Kennedy, death can happen at any age.

CheeseSandwichRiskAssessment · 28/06/2024 20:25

Michelle Obama has long said she doesn't want anything to do with running for public office herself. She would get my vote though.

I agree that they're not equivalent on a personal level, but their political CVs are identical: neither has been elected to anything “

Had Trump last time? I don’t think he had.

I imagine she is under intense pressure atm. The line will be its incumbent upon you to save Democracy in The USA.

I’d vote for her too, were I a US voter. Very smart person.

This has been an abusive situation for ages but not so long ago you were a bigot, fascist, Trump lover if you pointed this out.
He has been a shit president who pissed away women's rights on his first day on office. Harris cannot step up as she is incredibly unpopular and also shit.

Also terrible optics for democrats if they pass her over but I pray they do.

Trump’s age is way down the list as to why he is unsuitable.

Stowickthevast · 28/06/2024 21:02

FDR died in office in 1945 after being re-elected in 1944 in clearly poor health. But slightly different circumstances as it was the war, also he was 62 so a good deal younger than either of the present candidates.

USA burns . . . ?

Biden today was using a teleprompter. Any fool can use one. It’s not the real Biden. Yesterday was the real one who will be woken up in the middle of the night to address some crisis.

Why would Michelle Obama be under pressure she has no political experience in office

she is an extremely intelligent woman that is why she knows not to put herself forward

Biden isn’t stepping down sadly his family appears to support him. The best thing he has done for his country is beat Trump in 2020 the best thing he can do for his country now is step aside it’s like watching a slow car crash and there is four solid months of campaigning to go this can be turned around

My family in the states who support Biden are really worried the Trump supporters are celebrating

MrsSkylerWhite · 28/06/2024 22:23

HRTQueen

She will be under pressure because the Democrats know that were she to throw her hat into the ring she would be immensely popular.

HRTQueen · 28/06/2024 22:58

She won’t and I don’t believe senior democrats would advise this she already has enemies in Bidens team

another wife of an ex president and one with no political office experience

She is too smart and she would come under horrendous scrutiny

MariaLuna · 28/06/2024 22:58

If big donors pull out, Biden won’t have much choice. It all comes down to money. Let’s be honest if he dies this summer, they’ll need another candidate too. Surely someone has thought of that possibility - you’d think they have one or two people warming up already just in case ... (Like that governor from California?)
