Biden Trump debate- they must get rid of Biden now?

molotovcupcakes · 28/06/2024 07:10

Biden looked so frail and incoherant at times that this must be the end of his Presidency very soon.
How have the Democrats not faced this sooner and selected someone else, I don't understand why they have let this go on for so long.
He had to be helped off the stage by his wife and it seems like elder abuse.

There'll be a mechanism but first things first they have to face the reality it needs to happen. They seem to be in denial at the moment and wasting precious time. I'd have thought Kamala Harris is the only option at this stage. She needs to start getting out there.

Unfortunately not. She polls really badly, even worse than Biden and would certainly lose against Trump. She has been a terrible disappointment, with rumours of bullying behaviour and many of her key team walking out and refusing to work with her.

They need someone who polls better and whom would stand a chance at beating Trump. Aside from this's criteria, anyone will do as far as I'm concerned. Just get them in.

Puzzledandpissedoff · 28/06/2024 11:31

Sorry to bring it up but there's a second of these "debates" due to be hosted by ABC on 10 September
Of course Biden could pull out if he hasn't already been replaced by then, but perhaps that would look even worse even with a convenient cover story about "a 24 hour bug"?

And then we are pretty much guaranteed WWIII. I am so angry the democrats didn’t find another candidate and angry with Biden for not stepping down. Trump will be an utter disaster for the world, not just America. Why hasn’t Biden retired? When he’s on top form he’s great but he’s clearly struggling. He’s the safest option though because he will have a team of good people around him advising him. Trump will only have sycophants.

How many conflicts did Trump start during his presidency?

With a trillion dollars worth of US Government, the Houthis, Hamas, Hisbollah and the BRICS have just been treated to this performance by supposedly the 'leader of the free world'.

If I was a US citizen, I would be wary of leaving the US for the remainder of 2024, giving South America and Africa a particularly wide berth.

Most likely

Equally stupid term from the last Bush administration

Sloejelly · 28/06/2024 11:36

Biden can’t be replace unless he steps down. I think the democrats still have to officially make him their candidate though but that would mean their state representatives voting against the person they were told to vote for.

California seems to be taking a fairly extreme route in various matters, would the Governor of such a state be able to win over swing states?

nauticant · 28/06/2024 11:39

I am very far from being a Biden fan but I think the comments about him being unsteady on his feet, especially when walking down steps, needs the context of him having spinal arthritis.

However, I'm not aware of anything that will plausibly explain how there's a razor-sharp mind in there working with a fully functional memory.

Why does the US hardly ever have any candidates under 60/70? Anyone actually know?

Because generally, it takes decades of dodgy dealing to have done the favours to be able to raise the stupid amounts of money required to win the US election. Trump benefited from being a TV celeb first time around, so had millions of dollars of free exposure.

HRTQueen · 28/06/2024 11:53

Have just been watching senior democrats and no one was able to defend Biden's performance. They know he has to go I just wish someone with authority and influence would say this but they are all holding back and what for a sense of loyalty I really do not get this how it has got to this point

I have close family in the US who have voted both Biden and Trump. Those that voted Trump are still as passionate in their support for him those that voted Biden are not and this is the concern is that people will not feel strongly enough to vote to prevent Trump being the next president or will not feel strongly enough to vote for Biden to continue to be president

Voter apathy for Biden is the real concern

brrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr · 28/06/2024 11:58

Can we have someone under the age of 45 ?

Notonthestairs · 28/06/2024 11:59

Stowickthevast · 28/06/2024 11:26

@FOJN true about Gavin Newsome, but at least he would be able to be articulate against Trump. One of the issues last night is that Biden was saying that Trump was lying, but then not following up with specific examples of what the truth was.

@Notonthestairs this CSIS analysis is an alternative view re Taiwan https://www.csis.org/analysis/how-china-could-quarantine-taiwan-mapping-out-two-possible-scenarios

The EU has stepped up pressure a bit too in its latest package of Russia sanctions by sanctioning Chinese companies. Again this is adjacent but it's all related.

Thanks @Stowickthevast - the article is fascinating.

Biden is the sitting president, leader of the Democratic Party and only democratic candidate following the democratic primaries. The only person who has authority to stop him standing would be doctors who would have to state he didn’t have capacity and that would mean he would have to be removed as President now. Anyone senior who speaks up against him will be throwing themselves under the bus. It would be interesting to see if anyone is prepared to do that.

Sloejelly · 28/06/2024 12:02

It would be easier to speak out if he wasn’t president as any suggestions that he is not up to it obviously raises questions over his current presidency.

ImCamembertTheBigCheese · 28/06/2024 12:02

No way, they didn't get rid of Reagan.

Bunnycat101 · 28/06/2024 12:10

He and his team should have had the sense to step down and let someone else take a shot. Even if he wasn’t declining now (which he obviously is) there was always going to be a roll of the dice re his health over the next 5 years.

As much as there are lots of very elderly people doing amazing things, these jobs are incomparable in terms of stress and the toll they will be taking. Just look at Blair at the start and end of his term re what it does to you re ageing.

dragonmumof2 · 28/06/2024 12:10

I'm expecting him to die of "natural causes" in the next few months.

labamba007 · 28/06/2024 12:11

shearwater2 · 28/06/2024 07:24

I don't understand why Kamala Harris couldn't run. Why are these dreadful old gimmers in line to run the most powerful country on earth? Trump is also too old and a convicted felon. It's all so fucked up.

Unfortunately, opinion polls show people don't like her. Biden actually has more of a chance...which is depressing.

oakleaffy · 28/06/2024 12:23

molotovcupcakes · 28/06/2024 07:12

Was that link ''Silent?''- I couldn't hear a single thing, yet saw a frail Biden be escorted off {stage?}

Very worrying...It's as if he's a Puppet at the moment.

How on earth was Biden voted in with his cognitive issues?

Trump is ghastly, there HAS to be a better candidate, surely.

Blimey. I think there are easier ways than what you might be suggesting

AInightingale · 28/06/2024 12:27

There are several months to go before the new Presidential term begins. People are saying there has been a dramatic decline even since March of this year. He can't possibly stand in November, surely? Four years of this? If he was an ordinary Joe, family would be registering power of attorney by now, not handing over the nuclear codes.

hastalav · 28/06/2024 12:34

The poem "Sailing to Byzantium" by WB Yeats comes to mind -

"That is no country for old men"

Are the youth of America disengaged from politics? Maybe SM and making money, influencing etc. has taken over their lives I don't know, but you rarely see anyone under 30 amongst the "suits" surrounding the candidates (mostly men) really. That is an issue too. The country is being led by a generation that has little connection with those coming up behind them.

A future President could be Taylor Swift or similar. Yes I know Ronald Reagan was an actor, but still.

Maybe America is just doomed and no one cares anymore except about themselves.

Just musing to myself. I could be totally wrong about it all.

There is a big difference between his performance and him being medically incompetent. I know as have family members with dementia. He is far, far away from someone registering power of attorney for him.

But he definitely shouldn't be President of the USA.

ActivePeony · 28/06/2024 12:35

This has been an abusive situation for ages but not so long ago you were a bigot, fascist, Trump lover if you pointed this out.
He has been a shit president who pissed away women's rights on his first day on office. Harris cannot step up as she is incredibly unpopular and also shit.

Yeh there might have been some head in the sand over his decline
