… to think this is ridiculous. (portion size)

I fancied a Chelsea bun from the bakery this morning so asked for one to be added to my bread order. Didn’t really think much about it.

When I got it home I was staggered by the size of it.

Is this really what passes for the one serving of cake for one person? I’ll eat about a quarter. It will be stale tomorrow so the birds will get the rest.

Teaspoon for scale

I have a hearty appetite but wouldn't want yo eat all that. I'm sure I could but wouldn't really enjoy it. I'd eat one half day and half the next.

This is so offensive! People who aren't overweight are constantly being shamed on Mumsnet for eating like birds but if you dare to insinuate someone's fat it's considered rude. I'm going to dare to presume that most people making mean comments about 'competitive under eaters', 'eating like a bird', slim people only eat salad, 'skinny' people wouldn't do so in real life, wouldn't like to be judged about their own seemingly gargantuan appetites or the fact that they are indeed fat.

I'm sure some people will pile on and say 'I'm fat and proud', 'I'm fat but I eat nothing' but it doesn't change the fact that there are constant threads where posters shame people of a normal weight. This is an awful thread full of people who want to normalise eating too much. 68% of adults in the UK (22-23) are overweight or obese. This thread sums up why.

Who says all people with a low appetite are thin as well? It doesn't always work that way. I get sick of comments made to me like "oh you're thin, you'll not be able to eat it", "it'll be too much for you" etc etc. Why do people think it is okay to tell me what "I" can eat.
i went for a carvery with dh, and the man carving the meat gave me the tiniest slice, and dh tons. I was really hungry that day having had no breakfast, so ordered the large portion plate. Who is anybody to assume what you do and don't eat? I'm thin and I can finish my dinner faster than dh, easily eat the same portion size. It doesn't mean I always do, but I can. I am really active, and sometimes I get hungry, I also like a big cake!! I am the type of person that would much rather have one huge slice of chocolate fudge cake to overindulgence, than a tiny bit now and then. It settle my craving much better thank splitting it up over the week. It is the same with icecream, I'd rather eat a magnum tub over 1-2 days than the whole week/month. It is the same amount of calories by the end of the time period.

Well said. The shaming on here of women who naturally don't eat much or don't want to is so hypocritical, because fat shaming is never allowed in the same way.

NortieTortie · 26/06/2024 18:17

Why don't you just freeze it into 'your size' portions..? Cakes freeze well.

I'd eat that easily. (If I liked them. More of a Belgian bun kinda girl.)

soberfabulous · 26/06/2024 18:19

This is like the mythical Mumsnet chicken that feeds the five thousand over ten months.

I'd eat that bun easily in one sitting and I'm not even sorry 🤪

I'd scoff that in one go. But I'm clearly a big fat fatty unlike teeny tiny petite OP.

Why is it okay to shame people who either want to eat less or naturally eat less, like my teen DD, but god forbid we dare to remark on someone eating too much?

Because we all get fed up of the “Ooh, I eat like a bird, me! brigade who are actually passive aggressively commenting on those they deem to eat too much.

It’s not OK to comment on what other people eat at all.

Oh the irony!

So it's okay for all the skinny shamers to comment on what OP and other posters eat but god forbid they tell the fatties to step away from the cake aisle?

Frangipanyoul8r · 26/06/2024 18:29

I’d see that away no probs.

Why does it have to be "fatties" in the cake aisle? I'm in the cake aisle and I'm thin!
This was my point earlier. Just because you're fat/thin doesn't mean you can eat a large cake/meal in one sitting. Op could be overweight for all we know.

Except everyone has decided otherwise and that she must be a skinny "orthoroexic" c*nt sneering at everyone else.

godmum56 · 26/06/2024 18:36

that's not a great bun though. Not enough fruit or sugar

Differentstarts · 26/06/2024 18:37

WhatAFaffyFiasco · 26/06/2024 17:57

Yes, was it Euro Bakers, or a man on a beach? My first time a broad with my friends there was a man on the beach, selling huge doughnuts I'm sure it was all above board 😂

I can't remember it was a few years back I just remember this doughnut I was in heaven 😍

Mumtobabyhavoc · 26/06/2024 18:37

Normal for you, perhaps because you're younger?

I am in my sixties and am often surprised by the size of the buns in Tesco. In my day they were half, nay, a quarter of the size.

By the same token in my day you wouldn't see many morbidly obese out and about on the streets of London. Now the place is teeming with them and morbid obesity is so normalised that many have the audacity to go out dressed in bikini tops and shorts with their midriffs flapping about all over the place.

Mind you, I am quite fat myself - ate too many oversized buns!

What a disgusting way to talk about people

It is 6 inches square and 3 inches deep!

Standard size of a Chelsea Bun in the 70s. Where's the big crunchy sugar that's supposed to cover the top?

Yes, how much you can eat in one sitting isn't a weight thing. It is the calories you eat all of the time, whether they be all at once, or a million little spaced out calorific snacks. Obviously how active you are is a huge factor as well.

I'd personally just rather have my treat allocation all at once in a big fat slab of cake, and skip the teeny tiny treats. I also like a large meal rather than 3 small meals. We are all different, it works for me, and I'm healthy. People just assume people who eat a certain way weigh a certain amount.

In op's case though, I'm unsure why the need for the thread about a bread bun?

Edited

I think you can ask “why the need?” for so many threads on MN!

OP and her fellow performative undereaters are the ones shaming others.

So not ironic at all.

Is anyone else getting adverts for intermittent fasting?

No, mine are for bumper BBQ packs from Morrisons. More meat than myself and my 16-person family could eat in a month 😂

Where exactly has OP has shamed others? She hasn't, and nor have others. If people are reacting as though they're being shamed it's because of their own insecurities with being overweight/obese and overeating, nothing to do with OP.

ExpressCheckout · 26/06/2024 19:10

Can anyone manage a wafer-thin mint after that measly-sized bun?

*Before I'm flamed, this is a wee joke for people of a certain age who remember Monty Python 😂

Workoutinthepark · 26/06/2024 19:14

'Teaspoon for scale' 😄😄. I feel like this post is the most English thing I've ever seen.

Exactly how many portions can you get out of your roast chicken, OP?

Dunno - been vegetarian for over 30 years.
