… to think this is ridiculous. (portion size)

I fancied a Chelsea bun from the bakery this morning so asked for one to be added to my bread order. Didn’t really think much about it.

When I got it home I was staggered by the size of it.

Is this really what passes for the one serving of cake for one person? I’ll eat about a quarter. It will be stale tomorrow so the birds will get the rest.

Teaspoon for scale

You've missed the point. In 1993, crumpets would be 3/4 smaller than they are etc. Food portions have been sized up in the passing decades and now there's an obesity epidemic.

I find the anger on this thread about fat shaming so hypocritical. Why is it okay for posters to shame OP and others just because they eat less???? My teen DD is very tall for her age, naturally lean and has a small appetite. Family members constantly tell her she's too skinny in a way they'd never dream of telling her obese uncle that he's too fat, and they try to force more food on her all the time – how is that okay?

But everything is getting smaller, shrinkflation, the size of a regular mars bar today compared to the 70’s and 80’s are tiny and that’s just one example, there have been threads about how products are shrinking and we are still being charged the same, so no I don’t believe food products that we buy from supermarkets are increasing in size, completely the opposite.

This 100%

Only bored and/or moody MNers could pile on an Op about Chelsea buns 😂

Re calories and overeating, I don’t think many women (or indeed people) were attending gyms or out jogging in the past as they are now. People who have physical jobs have always been active of course, but in the 1970s who ever said that going to a gym was a thing? Only for a few people I would guess, but now it’s a very mainstream thing to do.

This is true. But people did walk more. Never mind that, though: Mumsnet's disorderly eaters have a few lively threads going on how exercise has no impact on weight. This is excellent for them, as it means they can back up their dietary obsessions with The Latest Science proving that overweight people are, indeed, greedy gluttons eating All The Wrong Things.

Personally, I tend to suspect that someone with a physically demanding job could eat quite a bit more (including Chelsea buns) than a paraplegic in a wheelchair before getting fat. But the teeny-tinies can always find some Science!

Also, I now want a Chelsea bun but the bakery's closed 😭

RunAwayTurnAwayRunAwayTurnAway · 26/06/2024 17:40

Is this competitive under eating, OP? A bun the width and height of a teaspoon is not massive!

KomodoOhno · 26/06/2024 17:41

Koolsgang · 26/06/2024 13:44

Not sure what your problem is here OP. It seems like a thinly veiled way of saying only fatties would eat the whole bun. Can you also not understand how people can finish an afternoon tea?

This. If it's so huge cut it in half.

ChrisPPancake · 26/06/2024 17:41

Nowhere near enough icing on that for me.

whyamisotiredallthetime · 26/06/2024 17:43

Could you manage that after a massive salad OP?

usernother · 26/06/2024 17:44

Are you French sized OP? IYKYN

custardcreme77 · 26/06/2024 17:45

I could easily eat that, no problem at all. I could eat one right now after seeing the picture.

ArabellaScott · 26/06/2024 17:46

I like big buns, I cannot lie.

Why not give some to a neighbour/friend if you dont want it all.

I can just imagine my neighbours perplexed face if I turned up at their door with a half eaten Chelsea bun, they would think I had lost the plot.

worcesterpear · 26/06/2024 17:47

I mean it's big but it's not that big. It looks too dry for me.

KTheGrey · 26/06/2024 16:44

It was the Gloucester Road one I went to last Christmas. Pinkertons, is it?

Anyway, they had big buns but they were not their own sourdoughs, because of burnt down kitchen catastrophe.

But I will try again next time I am in town. I am not too proud to make left over bun into breadnbutter pudding. 😀

Ahh, perhaps the park street kitchen was where the sourdoughnuts were made. I'm sure they are doing them again now though - Pinkmans - but I have had to unfollow their Instagram as it just makes me long for cake all the time 😁

Differentstarts · 26/06/2024 17:52

I remember once buying a doughnut abroad that was the size of my head. It was a great day 😁 and yes I did eat it all as I'm normal 😋 and it was a treat

KimberleyClark · 26/06/2024 17:53

gardenmusic · 26/06/2024 16:05

But which crumpets did the study use? Some scrappy little thing, or a generously sized one?

The giant ones?

SensualDecay · 26/06/2024 17:55

I'm very slim and I could demolish that within seconds and be ordering a couple of pizzas for pudding before you could say massive salad.

Yes, was it Euro Bakers, or a man on a beach? My first time a broad with my friends there was a man on the beach, selling huge doughnuts I'm sure it was all above board 😂

Theunamedcat · 26/06/2024 17:58

It won't be stale by tomorrow wrap it

HangingOver · 26/06/2024 17:58

Struggling to see how anyone would be anything other than delighted about a much larger than expected cake

notprincehamlet · 26/06/2024 18:05

Well I'd have to take a run at it but I reckon I could see it off in one sitting ... o that's a teaspoon! I thought it was a spade.

MoveMoveMove · 26/06/2024 18:05

I'm a certified fatty and I think that is too much for one person!
Could I eat it? Definitely!
Should I eat it? Absolutely not!
I really think we need a massive shift in our thinking in this country with regards to food.
Instead of council planners approving more takeaways on every high street they should be left to dwindle away with each shop closure. We need less apps such as Just Eat and Deliveroo available, not more.
We also need a better work/life balance to allow people time to cook fresh healthy meals for themselves and their families (ie not just the upper middle classes being able to have a parent at home or working part time to be able to be home in time to make a decent meal)
Lastly, we need to get back to lots of seasonal fresh products being available at a price everyone can afford, butchers and greengrocers on every high street (Instead of sodding takeaways!) Most supermarkets are full to the brim with UPF's and the fresh fruit and veg take up a tiny corner with minimal choice.
Obviously fresh healthy food is available if you make the effort to get it but with everyone working at full capacity, extra curriculars for the kids, trying to maintain a social life and everything else involved running a family people take the easy option, is it really surprising we are all getting fatter.
The technology that has meant to make our lives easier is slowly sucking the life out of us and few of us have the energy left to do anything about it.
Rant over!

KreedKafer · 26/06/2024 15:53

Nobody gives a shit about your performative bird-like appetite, OP. Either eat the fucking bun or don't eat it; no need to make a fuss.

This is so offensive! People who aren't overweight are constantly being shamed on Mumsnet for eating like birds but if you dare to insinuate someone's fat it's considered rude. I'm going to dare to presume that most people making mean comments about 'competitive under eaters', 'eating like a bird', slim people only eat salad, 'skinny' people wouldn't do so in real life, wouldn't like to be judged about their own seemingly gargantuan appetites or the fact that they are indeed fat.

I'm sure some people will pile on and say 'I'm fat and proud', 'I'm fat but I eat nothing' but it doesn't change the fact that there are constant threads where posters shame people of a normal weight. This is an awful thread full of people who want to normalise eating too much. 68% of adults in the UK (22-23) are overweight or obese. This thread sums up why.

sweetnessandlighter · 26/06/2024 13:46

"We've lost sight of normal portion sizes"

Haha! I know!

And the logic of people saying stuff like this while also saying "wagon wheels and curly wurlys have got much smaller! Remember when a tin of quality street was massive?!"

🙄

MintsPi · 26/06/2024 18:09

Gosh I can't believe that anyone could possibly eat all of that bun. My son is 6'5 with hollow legs and would struggle.

Not that he would eat a bun though of course!. We go for a walk to our local artisan bakery once a month to stand outside and sniff. All the joy without the calories.

No wonder the NHS is on it's knees.
