… to think this is ridiculous. (portion size)

I fancied a Chelsea bun from the bakery this morning so asked for one to be added to my bread order. Didn’t really think much about it.

When I got it home I was staggered by the size of it.

Is this really what passes for the one serving of cake for one person? I’ll eat about a quarter. It will be stale tomorrow so the birds will get the rest.

Their sourdoughnuts got small as they became more famous and as the piece went up!

They have a cafe on whiteladies and Gloucester road now should you feel the need 🙂

It was the Gloucester Road one I went to last Christmas. Pinkertons, is it?

Anyway, they had big buns but they were not their own sourdoughs, because of burnt down kitchen catastrophe.

But I will try again next time I am in town. I am not too proud to make left over bun into breadnbutter pudding. 😀

Have you actually looked into a study about this? Is talk like this normal in your household?

I looked it up because of this thread, but I do have an interest in portion size because as a child of the 70s I can see how much more we eat now than we did then. I am overweight and wish not to be and much of it it caused by simply eating too much. But no, it's not something we talk about at home!

HighOnMaiden · 26/06/2024 16:48

Utterly disgusting OP, I'm staggered too.

Staggered that ANYONE would choose a Chelsea bun over a Belgian.

Crokepark · 26/06/2024 16:50

Eh? That's a normal sized cake.

where is this bakery? (asking for a friend)

Is that friend, ahem, me?

That's about right for a chelsea bun. I'd be able to eat all that. If I though I'd struggle, I'd just freeze half.

Sahara123 · 26/06/2024 16:53

Make the rest into a Chelsea bun bread and butter pudding 🤤

Menora · 26/06/2024 16:58

I agree I think it’s a stupid size as a fresh product single serving but I am coming out of my era of thinking this was normal and fine, and realising it isn’t. As in, I no longer want to consume more calories than I can physically expend in a day on a regular basis by eating giant portions of food, eating this kind of thing as a meal or eating this on top of all my meals regularly. I would however cut it up and freeze it or share it with someone if I wanted half/quarter of it

LazyGewl · 26/06/2024 17:00

Radiatorrung · 26/06/2024 13:41

Looks normal size too me, do you not eat many buns?

Normal for you, perhaps because you're younger?

I am in my sixties and am often surprised by the size of the buns in Tesco. In my day they were half, nay, a quarter of the size.

By the same token in my day you wouldn't see many morbidly obese out and about on the streets of London. Now the place is teeming with them and morbid obesity is so normalised that many have the audacity to go out dressed in bikini tops and shorts with their midriffs flapping about all over the place.

Mind you, I am quite fat myself - ate too many oversized buns!

BrightYellowDaffodil · 26/06/2024 17:02

Ooh, a competitive under eating thread. We haven’t had one of those for days now.

<rubs hands and cracks knuckles>

If I ate that, I’d be full for at least a week. Even if I ate a small slice and froze the rest for consumption over several days, I’d still skip at least one meal that day because anything else would be utterly disgusting gluttony.

There, is that about right?

Ah fair enough. Yes, me and my OH are naturally er solidly built and are careful about what we eat generally which is why I would eat that bun without a second thought as a treat. We don't discuss food at all at home barring encouraging fruit and veg.
I would imagine things like crumpets, muffins etc are shrinking again though as a cost thing. I've had a Warburtons muffin today and I'm sure they are smaller.

Why has everyone plied on the OP? It's an innocuous observation about the size of a bun (which I agree is massive). Nearly every poster, bar one or two, has used this thread as a vehicle to shame the OP for not wanting to eat an enormous bun and to be downright nasty. Bullying at its finest, I hope you all feel very proud.

This 100%

Why is it okay to shame people who either want to eat less or naturally eat less, like my teen DD, but god forbid we dare to remark on someone eating too much?

Ooo I want to know where it is as well. Are all of the other cakes large too? I'm a size UK 8-10, healthy on the inside too as per latest health check.
If I'm going to have a treat I want a treat! I'd be partial to a giant Peach melba to scoff, while I binge watch on Netflix when the kids are in bed! 😋

Is this a humble brag about what a tiny appetite you have, and that that’s why other people are fat?

Most definitely.

AGodawfulsmallaffair · 26/06/2024 17:09

sugarbyebye · 26/06/2024 13:47

share it with a fat friend (or daughter, looking at you mum) and make horrified noises about how can they fit all that in?

😆

Luxell934 · 26/06/2024 17:09

Is that a teaspoon though or a tablespoon?

Haha. No. Not seriously at all. My tongue is firmly in my sugar encrusted cheek.

Yellowbananasarebetterthangreen · 26/06/2024 17:15

I think chelsea buns have always been about that big? Why not give some to a neighbour/friend if you dont want it all. Or freeze it. Or just eat it tomorrow.
I dont get the problem.

DiscoBeat · 26/06/2024 17:18

It is too much for one sitting but I'd do as you have and cut it in half, one for tomorrow.

WithACatLikeTread · 26/06/2024 17:20

YABU I would eat all that quite easily in one sitting.

Jacopo · 26/06/2024 17:23

I agree, that bun is twice the size of the ones I ate in my youth. I don't understand why people are so triggered when this is pointed out. Portion sizes are much bigger than they were. People are much bigger than they were. It's not unreasonable to assume there may be some kind of correlation between the two.

FangsForTheMemory · 26/06/2024 17:25

SpidersAreShitheads · 26/06/2024 16:30

People complaining about the bun being large enough to share are going to be apoplectic when they hear about birthday cakes.

You’re suggesting there are people who SHARE their birthday cake?

JOEY DOESN’T SHARE CAKE!
