… to think this is ridiculous. (portion size)

I fancied a Chelsea bun from the bakery this morning so asked for one to be added to my bread order. Didn’t really think much about it.

When I got it home I was staggered by the size of it.

Is this really what passes for the one serving of cake for one person? I’ll eat about a quarter. It will be stale tomorrow so the birds will get the rest.

I could eat that easily.

NonPlayerCharacter · 26/06/2024 16:15

Eat what you want and turn the rest into breadcrumbs.

SplendidUtterly · 26/06/2024 16:21

Just eat it and enjoy it.

Obviously you're meant to present it in the middle of the dinner table and carve it like a turkey. And be careful not to "overface" anyone, there's always seconds if you've got hollow legs.

And have leftovers for 2 weeks after feeding a family of five.

But who would waste freezer space on half a bun? What's wrong with chucking out half a bun if you're not going to eat it? The foxes in my garden would love it.

Most people wouldn’t be complaining about the size of a Chelsea bun 😆… they’d eat it, share it or just warm it up the next day to eat. So failing that, freezing it seems like a sensible option as opposed to just chucking perfectly good food out that is obviously a treat for her.

I was trying to avoid linking to the article because it was in the Daily Mail. But here it is, with the calculations the scientists used.

The link isn’t showing for me @Bookmark1111 - could you try sharing it again please?

I was under the impression that portion sizes had gotten smaller, hence all the coverage on “shrinkflation” in recent years so I’d be really interested in seeing the details on this.

purplecaterpillar · 26/06/2024 14:30

@marylou25 you are comparing different things. Bun trays years ago were for fairy cakes. Cup cakes are an American import and were always larger with much more icing than fairy cakes. You don't need liners, just grease them properly.

My point being though that nobody eats fairy cake/queen cake size buns anymore, there are only cupcake/muffin size tins in the shops so yes the bigger portions did arrive from America and we have embraced them! There are no fairy cake size tins out there now unless you buy mini muffin ones which are not too much smaller. I like a paper wrapper even on my fairy cakes, the tins are over 50 yrs old and show their age so not really suitable for baking bare in at this stage greased or not even if I wanted to.

We called them all buns even with icing but we did have icing on them too even 50 odd yrs ago

extrasushiplease · 26/06/2024 16:30

It's huge, but just wrap half for tomorrow so it won't go stale: What's unreasonable is your instant instinct to waste food.

SpidersAreShitheads · 26/06/2024 16:30

People complaining about the bun being large enough to share are going to be apoplectic when they hear about birthday cakes.

EsmeSusanOgg · 26/06/2024 16:33

That looks the same size of Chelsea Bun that the WRVS ladies used to serve at the Dental Hospital when I was a kid. It's a very occasional treat (and was a good bribe for going to the orthodontist for braces as a Tween. I accept there was an element of irony over serving delicious sugary buns). I was a wee tiny thing back then too, and I easily ate a whole bun.

Only kids ate fairy cakes in the past. They were not seen as an adult cake.
You can still buy ready made fairy cakes in packs. They are aimed at children.

Our local supermarkets sell fairy cakes as well as the larger muffins. They usually have the generic branded ones plus some made by a local bakery.

One of my DC loves simple fairy cakes with icing and sprinkles, hence why I look out for them.

You can also buy fairy cake cooking trays still too. I replaced mine fairly recently. It’s definitely not muffin sized. I also have the mini tray too which is smaller again.

Does anybody else find that the oversized cakes/pastries found on market stalls/shops tend to not taste very nice and are disappointing to eat?

Well, what a waste of perfectly good food.
You could cut it up and freeze it easily enough.

housethatbuiltme · 26/06/2024 16:37

I mean its a tea spoon not a soup ladle... teaspoons are famously quite small.

I totally agree. Many look great and taste disappointing. Give me an old fashioned iced finger instead.

MrsMariaReynolds · 26/06/2024 16:38

Don't worry Op. Just enjoy, and maybe balance it out with an "enormous" salad later on. 😁

Seriously though, £1.50 is really good value for that bun.

shellyleppard · 26/06/2024 16:38

That looks well lush..... I'd be happy with a bun that big ☺️🤣

user1984778379202 · 26/06/2024 16:01

Oh, so you have the precise weight and diameter measurements to prove it's rubbish? Because the University of Cambridge scientists and dieticians who carried out the study that portion article was based on did have the measurements when they did the comparisons.

Edited

Have you actually looked into a study about this? Is talk like this normal in your household?

Thank you @WeRateSquirrels and @Bookmark1111 - apologies, I completely missed that.

My excuse is that I’m sitting in the garden and didn’t notice the colour of the hyperlink due to the bright sun on my screen 🤦🏻‍♀️🤦🏻‍♀️😂

Going off to have a read of it now, cheers!

Looks amazing.

Put the tape measure away and just enjoy! The rest will be fine for tomorrow too :)

@Elphame Just wrap and freeze whatever you don’t eat, and enjoy another time. 🤷‍♀️
