… to think this is ridiculous. (portion size)

I fancied a Chelsea bun from the bakery this morning so asked for one to be added to my bread order. Didn’t really think much about it.

When I got it home I was staggered by the size of it.

Is this really what passes for the one serving of cake for one person? I’ll eat about a quarter. It will be stale tomorrow so the birds will get the rest.

Teaspoon for scale

Yanbu thats bloody rodidiculois. No wonder there is so much food waste in this country.

It costs pence to make and is oversized so that people feel like they have a bargain and can reason to themselves that it's "just one". It's not. It's about 4.

Smaller cakes are available. Try a Mr. Kiplings.
Why order a notoriously large cake, if you don't want a large cake?
If I want a small cake, I buy a small cake, if I want a large cake, I'll go for one of the traditionally bigger ones.

Crumpets were not 3/4 smaller in 1993. What rubbish.

Oh, so you have the precise weight and diameter measurements to prove it's rubbish? Because the University of Cambridge scientists and dieticians who carried out the study that portion article was based on did have the measurements when they did the comparisons.

GettingAwayFromYou · 26/06/2024 15:53

I knew when I skipped forward to page 9 there'd be a bun fight.

😏😏😏

Excellent!

NasiDagang · 26/06/2024 16:02

It looks dry and unappetising.

Icecreamcone100 · 26/06/2024 16:03

I’d be delighted. No one says it has to be eaten in one go. Why would you chuck it? Freeze it whilst it’s fresh and finish it off another day…

Do you?

It is less than 300 calories.

What a stupid comment. I'm quoting the study.

diddl · 26/06/2024 16:05

Why order a notoriously large cake,

I had no idea that a Chelsea bun was notoriously large!

Never seen one!

gardenmusic · 26/06/2024 16:05

But which crumpets did the study use? Some scrappy little thing, or a generously sized one?

Kinshipug · 26/06/2024 16:06

user1984778379202 · 26/06/2024 16:04

No. You're guessing based on a vague memory of a graphic you saw in a newspaper years ago. Please do link evidence of crumpets being vastly smaller in 1993.

GalileoHumpkins · 26/06/2024 16:07

Do people really piss about making bread and butter pudding out of half a Chelsea bun?

KTheGrey · 26/06/2024 16:07

saraclara · 26/06/2024 15:48

Chelsea buns are basically bread with just a touch of fat and sugar. Calorie-wise they're not at all comparable to a slice of Victoria sponge or a slice of tiffin, which have far more butter/fat and sugar.

Depends on the size, surely? I mean, that's a good big bun. 3 slices of bread, no?

There's a place in Bristol that sells sourdoughnuts and they appear to both enormous and expensive. To my sadness they had burnt down their kitchen, when i was visiting, so I will never know.

It is 6 inches square and 3 inches deep!

Freeze what you don't eat for another time or two.

Oh, yes. Big. As is a Belgian Bun.

Their sourdoughnuts got small as they became more famous and as the piece went up!

They have a cafe on whiteladies and Gloucester road now should you feel the need 🙂

If I wanted to troll MN I'd put up a post like this. It ticks lovely boxes about portion size, price and competetive under-eating. 😂

MyOtherHusbandIsAWash · 26/06/2024 16:09

TBF that is feckin huge! Good value yes but I do agree portion sizes are going the way of ‘murica (and yes I can finish an afternoon tea in one go 😂).

purplecaterpillar · 26/06/2024 16:10

You get giant crumpets now. But the warburtons crumpets are the same size they have always been,
It is well known that sizes have been shrinking in many areas. Chocolate bars are much smaller for example.

BobandRobertaSmith · 26/06/2024 16:10

CatsLikeBoxes · 26/06/2024 15:24

@dunkdemunder are you saying you would get over 15 servings from a tub of Ben and Jerry's? (3 adults, 5 days, some left over)

Maybe… it lasts forever in my house. Although TBF I usually serve ice cream with fruit or cake, or in toddler size portions. I can never be bothered to leave it out long enough to go soft enough to scoop. After 5 minutes of hacking at it with a spoon with one hand frozen and the other with bruised fingers, I tend to give up after more than 2 tablespoons 😂

I was trying to avoid linking to the article because it was in the Daily Mail. But here it is, with the calculations the scientists used.

You youngsters! No perseverance

Dinosweetpea · 26/06/2024 16:13

Yum! Shame on you for wasting food 🤣

DojaPhat · 26/06/2024 16:14

This post is basically mumsnet crack! Grin Has anyone mentioned their 6ft5 rugby playing husbands or sons who'd eat 3 of those in one bite?
