David Tennant: women should "shut up"

1000 replies

jacksonlamb · 26/06/2024 13:36

As a (now ex) David Tennant fan I was so disappointed to hear his speech yesterday. Whilst talking about trans rights he told his audience that he wanted a world where "we wake up and Kemi Badenoch doesn't exist anymore. I don't wish ill of her, I just wish her to shut up."

(There's some devious doublespeak here: if you wish someone didn't exist, you obviously wish them ill).

But more importantly, how dare he tell women to shut up about women's rights. Yet again powerful and privileged men tell women what they are and are not allowed to say. They must shut up whilst men speak. Their views are wrong, men are right.

Anyone has the right to believe that the rights of trans people are more important than the rights of women (although I believe this is profoundly wrong). What they do not have the right to do is bully, belittle and threaten women who disagree with them; who are trying to protect their hard fought rights.

I despair.

To all of them? That’s moving fast

Although good to hear the Labour ‘no one’s talking about it’ being picked up again

Believe what you want to believe, of course. In my constituency, it hasn't come up as an issue, and I am not hearing that it's been different elsewhere. The thing about Mumsnet is that it's an echo chamber - especially on this particular issue. What's said on here is absolutely not reflected across the general population. Anyway, we'll all find out on polling day, won't we?

Is there anything in Badenoch's scramble up the greasy pole to suggest she's really interested in women's rights and not just latching onto the 'men in single sex spaces' thing to advance her career.

Career ambition? In a Black woman? How utterly ghastly. Doesn't she know she should pipe down and let pRoGrEsSiVe rich white men do all her thinking for her?

I think it is absolutely clear that she has sat down, done the thinking and the work, and fought to get policy in place that will protect women against this tide of misogynist, reality-denying nonsense. I am a life-long lefty, profoundly grateful to her, and deeply apprehensive about what will happen when she is replaced by a Labour Party in thrall to trans activists.

Yes I think it's crazy that a Labour support and known humanist would wish a Black woman out of existence and tell her to shut up!

So he could tell a white woman to shut up and you'd be OK with that? Her ethnicity seems irrelevant in this, whoever she is.

I would support any black woman that speaks for us attempting the greasy pole on either side of the political divide, however they are extremely thin on the ground in the Labour Party owing to the fact they are not allowed to exist at all, in any form.

ToWhitToWhoo · 26/06/2024 16:00

Kemi Badenoch is quite likely to be the next Tory leader. I do hate her, because she's a horrible right-winger. It's nothing to do with her being a woman; I hate Nigel Farage, Jacob Rees Mogg, Christopher Chope and Philip Davies even more (not to mention Donald Trump!)

I don't wish them dead or physically harmed in any way; but I would like to see them and their viewpoints totally defeated.

Yes I’m sure Starmer cares not about his career

Just black women getting it wrong, too much opinion, too ambitious. Are they too uppity or something

How blatant is that?

This is a genuine question as I’m old but how does a 10 year old know what being non binary is?

Nope. It's from actually standing on the doorstep talking to voters.

See, that's where I'm going wrong. I don't answer the door as I'm on Mumsnet, and I'd just assume you were a Nottingham knocker trying to sell me an overpriced loo brush, which I wouldn't use anyway.

Not according to Kemi, it isn't.

That wasn't according to Kemi. That was according to me.

The LGBTQ community are some of the least privileged in society.

Actually, according to a recent report by The Economist, gay men are amongst the wealthiest cohort in the UK with the most disposable income. Child gender dysphoria is most prevalently seen in the middle classes. Transwomen based on anecdata tend to be from middle class backgrounds. It's true that lesbains are fairly well represented in working class communities and there are a number of complex socio-economic reasons for this. But Lesbians are often terfs so let's not think about them.

Do you have a breakdown of attendees by race and background?

Nope, my source is my eyes, which showed me a sea of braying pink posh looking faces, all squiffy on their own smug sense of self-righteaousness as they guffawed at the notion of a Black woman being 'put in her place' by a posh white bloke.

Tennant isn't 'posh' btw.

Posh clothes, posh job, posh house, posh wife, luxury beliefs? The results of the test are...posh!

That wasn't according to Kemi. That was according to me.

Dissidents in the ranks?

Does the report refer to all gay men? For example, gay men from traditionally marginalised communities? I'm not just talking about Trans people. LGBTQ people have some of the worst health outcomes, disproportionate amounts of poverty, suicidal ideation and other mental health issues, social exclusion, familial ostracism, homophobia and hate crime.

So absolutely no evidence to back up your claims?

Posh clothes, posh job, posh house, posh wife, luxury beliefs? The results of the test are...posh!

Tennant doesn't come from a privileged background. I'm sure many of the attendees didn't and you have no evidence that they did. He's wealthy but then so is Kimi, whose parents were doctors. She also holds/held a powerful position in government and has a lot of influence and power.

Ethnicity is never ever irrelevant! Where didn’t he go for JKR? Or similar? He picked out quite deliberately a black female politician. God help him if anything happens to her now. Disgusting.

SloaneStreetVandal · 26/06/2024 16:03

Freedom of speech extreme left style = 'you are free to speak, but only if you agree with me'. Tennant is an absolute bore.
I won't be voting tory next week, but I can't vote labour either whilst they're supporting this type of rhetoric.

There is much I disagree with kemi on but she has taken time to meet with detransitioners and women's groups. When it comes to this particular issue it's clear she has done her research and understands the issues, which is more than can be said for her counterpart Anneliese Dodds

I can’t work out if David is speaking to the converted worshippers in the Labour Party and reaffirming that particular vile world view that our rights are irrelevant as women.
Or if David is in charge of a dog whistle to the red wall male reform voters.
51% of the worthless female vote was obviously not worth caring about and collateral damage. Labours hatred of women and girls seems to know no bounds.

I wonder if KB’s defenders on here would love her just as much if when she takes us out of the ECHR.
Again she gave not one shit about Diane Abbott when the millionaire donor wanted to shoot her. Very telling.

Is this David Tennant the actor? From Dr Who?

He may well be well known and liked, but what does that have to do with his views on gender? If he’s socially privileged (not sure what that means) that’s passed me by, but I can’t see how social privilege would make his views any more relevant or important or noteworthy than anyone else’s. And whatever platform he has is self-assigned: we are all free to ignore and pay attention to whomever we choose. We all have our own minds.

As for him having a lot of power - sorry but that’s just ridiculous. HOW does David Tennant have any, let alone a lot of power? I’d venture that most people in this country won’t know who he is; of those who do, the vast majority would laugh at the idea of him having any power. It’s basically just Dr Who fans (not just the viewship), most of whom I’m going to guess aren’t even old enough to vote. So a teeny tiny corner of the voting population.

Davis Tennant has absolutely no power over anyone who doesn’t allow him to have power over them.

This whole thread is utterly depressing. General election next week and someone is bothered about what a random tv actor thinks about a single, specific issue. No wonder we’re all in this utter shite of a mess.

Here is a link to a definition of social privilege. You can google for more – there's plenty; it's not hard to find out about. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Social_privilege en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Social_privilege]]]]

I'm not sure if you're being obtuse deliberately. Because he is well known, and people will click on articles/pictures featuring him, his event/his speech has been the subject of pieces on the BBC news website and in other national and local media. It's also been widely shared on SM. As has the pic of him in his somewhat threatening T-shirt about having to go through him to get to trans people.
So his views, his little speech, and the message on his T-shirt, are being looked at and thought about, I'd wager by quite a lot of people. (I'd strongly dispute that 'most people in this country won’t know who he is'; I refer you back to the fact that media outlets have picked up on and are disseminating his speech and actions. Also, look at any of the TV shows he's been in or any of his plays, for which tickets have consistently sold out in about two minutes.)

I'm Scots, and I can confirm that the SNP's stance on this has gone down like a lead balloon. Indeed Patrick Harvie's deranged comments on the cass report was an aggravating factor in the SNP having to boot them out of government (below is actual footage of said booting 😂)

Exactly.

He said he wanted to find she doesn't exist anymore and for that he received big applause. He only qualified his disgusting statement when he realised that he had been too honest about his misogynistic and vile views.

Kemi Badenoch might only be one woman, but she speaks for the rights of all women.
