David Tennant: women should "shut up"

1000 replies

jacksonlamb · 26/06/2024 13:36

As a (now ex) David Tennant fan I was so disappointed to hear his speech yesterday. Whilst talking about trans rights he told his audience that he wanted a world where "we wake up and Kemi Badenoch doesn't exist anymore. I don't wish ill of her, I just wish her to shut up."

(There's some devious doublespeak here: if you wish someone didn't exist, you obviously wish them ill).

But more importantly, how dare he tell women to shut up about women's rights. Yet again powerful and privileged men tell women what they are and are not allowed to say. They must shut up whilst men speak. Their views are wrong, men are right.

Anyone has the right to believe that the rights of trans people are more important than the rights of women (although I believe this is profoundly wrong). What they do not have the right to do is bully, belittle and threaten women who disagree with them; who are trying to protect their hard fought rights.

I despair.

Men who support males accessing women’s spaces are women haters. There is no ‘outside the trans debate’ on that.

however he also knew about John barrowman regularly flashing on set (even wrote a comedy song for the producers discussing the incident) and did nothing to support the victims. The comedy song would suggest he found a male exposing himself to women quite funny - which pretty much goes full circle to the first point….

Gymrabbit · 26/06/2024 14:00

*Foxblue *

he also started by saying he wished she ‘didn’t exist’ which is quite threatening in my opinion.

BubziOwl · 26/06/2024 14:01

I'm surprised everyone's het up about the "shut up" bit. The "stop existing" bit is clearly more hateful and tbh a little unnerving

I'll admit I know very little about any of this and I'm not even sure who the woman in question is other than I know she's a Tory politician.

But a man very publicly and visibly wishing a woman would "stop existing"... that's disturbing and the implications are obvious

AlisonDonut · 26/06/2024 14:04

He called for action to stop one woman existing.

Rather let the cat out of the bag there David. Woman hating really is universal.

OP, why spread hate?

Edited

Shouldn't that be "David Tennant why spread hate?" 🤔

calexico · 26/06/2024 14:05

What extreme views does Kemi Badeboch have? What makes her far right? I think wishing that someone didn't exist because they have a different opinion to yours is pretty extreme.

I'd forgotten about that. Grim.

So he didn’t say “women” should shut up.

Just one specific woman.

Yes.

He went after Kemi and not, for example, JKR or Mara Yamauchi or Sharron Davies. Now why would that be?

I can't think.

I expected better of him. But just because you're an actor in a well loved TV show doesn't make you a sensible person I suppose.

Weetabbix · 26/06/2024 14:14

So when did he say that women should shut up?

A colleague of mine said the Tories were far right on trans rights as well.

If you think women are women and men are men, you are far right. Who knew.

sundaysathome · 26/06/2024 14:15

Kemi was an easy, soft target for DT.
He's shining light on TRA misogyny though, which is helpful

Aquamarine1029 · 26/06/2024 13:55

Why wouldn't it be?

Really????

He wants her to " shut up" because she has a different view to his. He wants her to "stop existing" because she has a different view to his. That OK by you? Jeez.

You're twisting this - it's one woman... one woman with some very extreme and unpleasant views.

Not when it comes to women's rights to their own spaces

parkrun500club · 26/06/2024 14:14

He probably went after Kemi because she's the Equalities minister and has direct political control over the issues he was talking about. JKR, MY and SD do not. That fact won't have passed you by, you just wanted to shoehorn in an irrelevant allusion.

I don't think her views are extreme or unpleasant on this particular issue - they seem pretty mainstream to me - supporting single sex spaces and sport.

CarterBeatsTheDevil · 26/06/2024 14:18

Kemi Badenoch's vile. I wish she'd shut up too. Sorry.

greenpolarbear · 26/06/2024 14:18

The idea is that everyone has equal rights, I think you're not understanding that.

Tiredalwaystired · 26/06/2024 14:19

wibblywobblywoo · 26/06/2024 13:50

So....that's alright then? 🤔🙄

For balance I think the same about Trump. And Farage. I assume that makes me twice as awful.

Onedayatatime22 · 26/06/2024 13:41

You're twisting this - it's one woman... one woman with some very extreme and unpleasant views.

And obviously wanting someone to "stop existing" because their views differ from yours is....well according to you not extreme or unpleasant at all! 🙄

ClaudiaWankleman · 26/06/2024 14:17

She is black and she also made the point that the other high profile politician who everyone wants to shut up is Diane Abbot who also happens to be black.

I didn't see the whole speech so I don't know if he specifically alluded to the fact that Kemi is in government but that's only until next Thursday (if Labour win) so she probably can't do much anyway.

horseyhorsey17 · 26/06/2024 14:20

It's one woman, and that woman is vile, and no friend to anyone except Kemi Badenoch. She's just dogwhistling to the GC crowd because she thinks it'll help her be leader of the Tories in the future. I wish she'd shut up too.

wibblywobblywoo · 26/06/2024 14:22

CarterBeatsTheDevil · 26/06/2024 14:18

Kemi Badenoch's vile. I wish she'd shut up too. Sorry.

Please explain what is vile about wanting biological women to have safe spaces? Please.

Nevergoodenoughforthem · 26/06/2024 13:48

When his poor kid grows up and decides ‘they’ no longer ID as ‘non binary’, how the heck would that even go? The whole family are so indoctrinated there’s a concern that ‘they’ wouldn’t be able to not be part of this circus.

Probably respect their decision. Weird concept, right?

cavalier · 26/06/2024 14:23

He needs to get in a tardis and not ever come back … mr Dave Darlek tennant

Cas112 · 26/06/2024 14:24

He didn't say 'women'

Title needs changing
