David Tennant: women should "shut up"

1000 replies

jacksonlamb · 26/06/2024 13:36

As a (now ex) David Tennant fan I was so disappointed to hear his speech yesterday. Whilst talking about trans rights he told his audience that he wanted a world where "we wake up and Kemi Badenoch doesn't exist anymore. I don't wish ill of her, I just wish her to shut up."

(There's some devious doublespeak here: if you wish someone didn't exist, you obviously wish them ill).

But more importantly, how dare he tell women to shut up about women's rights. Yet again powerful and privileged men tell women what they are and are not allowed to say. They must shut up whilst men speak. Their views are wrong, men are right.

Anyone has the right to believe that the rights of trans people are more important than the rights of women (although I believe this is profoundly wrong). What they do not have the right to do is bully, belittle and threaten women who disagree with them; who are trying to protect their hard fought rights.

I despair.

I said the LGBTQ community. Not the celebrity parents of a handful. Keep up.

So these kids aren’t part of the LGBTQ community? Wow that’s quite a statement

I also saw him recently in a trans coloured t shirt that said "You'll have to go through me first"

All of his pronouncements on this subject are notably violence-coded and I find that interesting as well as alarming.

Is it just old-fashioned violent misogynistic tendencies making themselves known in the only way that's acceptable to his level of privilege and social class? Or is it the type of pathetic violent signalling that is sometimes done by men who feel emasculated or frustrated in other areas of their lives (for another example of this see Will Smith and The Slap)? Or is it misdirected and projected fear of what is being done to his child, and what this may say about his parenting?

Who knows, who cares. But he doesn't get to enact his inner psychological distress in wishing violence on women in public life. David, grow up and get thee to a therapist.

Agree with this

It's a defence mechanism of some description. Either like you say, due to him perhaps questioning himself. Or, it's just a nasty 'don't you fucking dare question me' arrogance. Neither of which are particularly pleasant attributes.

It's noticeable how much more aggressive men become, once they are entrenched in these beliefs.

It's very similar to my uncle who is a right wing conspiracy theorist. It seems that if someone falls down a rabbit hole, they will do more and more to 'prove' they are right. Particularly when they are questioned, and / or appear to be losing your argument

LordPercyPercy · 26/06/2024 15:18

The LGBTQ community are some of the least privileged in society.

Could you clarify in which sense they are "least priviledged"? I'm not seeing it.

She's running again for party leader. So unlikely.

Yes, good point. It would be nice if she lost her seat but unfortunately that's unlikely
. I suspect that anything she says or does is carefully planned to facilitate her own personal ambition

Also 'trans kids' are statistically WAY over represented among celebrity parents. What are we to make of that?

JulianAssangesCat · 26/06/2024 15:16

The only women he wants to “shut up” are those who disagree with him. I’m sure he’d like JKR and Kathleen Stock to shut up (or cease to exist) too.

Typical from someone like that

The coloniser spirit is alive and well in Britain

Not according to Kemi, it isn't.

The LGBTQ community are some of the least privileged in society. Do you have a breakdown of attendees by race and background? Tennant isn't 'posh' btw.

Not according to Kemi, it isn't.

That wasn't according to Kemi. That was according to me.

The LGBTQ community are some of the least privileged in society.

Actually, according to a recent report by The Economist, gay men are amongst the wealthiest cohort in the UK with the most disposable income. Child gender dysphoria is most prevalently seen in the middle classes. Transwomen based on anecdata tend to be from middle class backgrounds. It's true that lesbains are fairly well represented in working class communities and there are a number of complex socio-economic reasons for this. But Lesbians are often terfs so let's not think about them.

Do you have a breakdown of attendees by race and background?

Nope, my source is my eyes, which showed me a sea of braying pink posh looking faces, all squiffy on their own smug sense of self-righteaousness as they guffawed at the notion of a Black woman being 'put in her place' by a posh white bloke.

Tennant isn't 'posh' btw.

Posh clothes, posh job, posh house, posh wife, luxury beliefs? The results of the test are...posh!

Wrong thread 🤦🏻‍♀️

Pasithean · 26/06/2024 15:22

Wrong end of the stick love and your thread title is click bait.

mondaytosunday · 26/06/2024 15:22

There are some specific women (and men) I wish would 'shut up'. I am not famous so people don't care what I think.
And @wibblywobblywoo no it is not.

GreigeO · 26/06/2024 15:22

I can't believe he thinks this is a good look for him!

AGlinnerOfHope · 26/06/2024 15:23

I’m startled by the defence of David Tenant earlier in the thread. I’ve been a massive fan but he’s joined the list of people I can no longer find entertaining. Their vile behaviour stops me enjoying their performance.

DeeLight00 · 26/06/2024 15:23

araiwa · 26/06/2024 13:42

He hasn't told me to shut up

Have you disagreed with him yet?

LizzieBennett73 · 26/06/2024 15:24

I've always admired his acting but he seems to be slowly losing the plot on and off screen. Arrogance isn't attractive in anyone.

JennyBeanR · 26/06/2024 15:24

CarterBeatsTheDevil · 26/06/2024 14:18

Kemi Badenoch's vile. I wish she'd shut up too. Sorry.

How is she vile? I see a strong, intelligent woman who is rising in ranks in a field rampant with misogyny who isn't afraid to stand up for women's rights.

I would say the men demanding access to women's spaces, and those supporting them are vile personally.

SerafinasGoose · 26/06/2024 15:24

CheltenhamLady · 26/06/2024 15:15

What utter rubbish.

On the contrary, it's a valid point.

JennyBeanR · 26/06/2024 15:25

Cas112 · 26/06/2024 14:24

He didn't say 'women'

Title needs changing

No but he singled her out specifically because of her stance on women's rights.

Meetingofminds · 26/06/2024 15:26

Kemi speaks for 99% of us! Ofc it matters. We all know what he meant I wish they didn’t exist and wpuld shut up. The irony of him being a man is astounding.

99%? I doubt it.

wibblywobblywoo · 26/06/2024 15:27

Hiphopopotamonster · 26/06/2024 14:26

Actually no. I wish Trump would stop existing and shut up. He spouts hateful speech and I want him to shut up.

To many people but especially to those who have trans and non binary children, the anti trans rhetoric that is being used and that sadly so many women are falling for is hateful and personal. It’s not just a ‘different view’. It’s a direct attack on people they love.

Honestly the whole debate is so toxic. It’s a ridiculous culture war that is feeding in to irrational and biased fear and it’s so depressing that on MN, so many women have decided that this is the battle to fight on women’s rights. It’s not. And if you keep gravitating towards those like Kemi who pander to these views, you’re going to be very disappointed with where the rights of women end up. (Spoilers, it won’t be in affordable childcare, better paid maternity, lower instances of domestic violence or more choices for women)

Do you literally not see how very basically wrong it is to wish someone dead because they have a different view to you, about one thing or many? Free speech is being eroded under the guise of "it's better this way". No, it isn't.

And you think it's OK because you feel on the 'correct' side of the fence by hating Trump? Soon there'll be the next person with views you, and the very illiberal liberals, deem 'unacceptable' and the next......until one day it's your turn to say the wrong thing, and who'll be left to stick up for your right to your own view then.....no one.

When Nazism began it had a popular following because it found easy targets and made people feel powerful and 'correct' by ridding themselves of these 'undesirables' .

And here we are again,at a point where anyone who doesn't hold certain proscribed views is deemed 'far right' (🙄) and according to you it's fine to wish 'those people' dead. Dead.

Truly we have regressed.

JennyBeanR · 26/06/2024 15:27

Runnerinthenight · 26/06/2024 14:56

WTF do people have to make a race issue out of everything??!! Sometimes POC are dicks the same as sometimes white people are!!

Because there's plenty of white women in his field of work, and even in parliament who have the same views as Kemi. His targeting of her could be just because she's in government, but it could be because she is a black woman.

Meetingofminds · 26/06/2024 15:28

The sheer gall of the little shit, how dare he speak to a black woman like that, he has singled her out because at some point she is going to be our next PM.

CantDealwithChristmas · 26/06/2024 15:28

LizzieBennett73 · 26/06/2024 15:24

I've always admired his acting but he seems to be slowly losing the plot on and off screen. Arrogance isn't attractive in anyone.

He's going down the Owen Jones and Jolyon Maugham route.

Posh privileged men educated beyond their own innate intellectual competence embrace a mad ideology but find it harder and harder to defend as empirical facts and events stack up against it.

The strain of defending the indefensible along with the well-researched stress of cognitive dissonance becomes a sort of mind virus.

Eventually they end up ranting on a stage about Black women that shouldn't exist, or equally ranting on twitter about evil shadowy forces controlled by Israel and some bloke on Tufton Street,

It's quite sad, when it isn't funny as hell.

Meetingofminds · 26/06/2024 15:29

ilovesooty · 26/06/2024 15:27

99%? I doubt it.

Well I am factoring in the 1% trans figures which are the official figures- maybe they think it’s dreadful too, agreed.
