David Tennant: women should "shut up"

As a (now ex) David Tennant fan I was so disappointed to hear his speech yesterday. Whilst talking about trans rights he told his audience that he wanted a world where "we wake up and Kemi Badenoch doesn't exist anymore. I don't wish ill of her, I just wish her to shut up."

(There's some devious doublespeak here: if you wish someone didn't exist, you obviously wish them ill).

But more importantly, how dare he tell women to shut up about women's rights. Yet again powerful and privileged men tell women what they are and are not allowed to say. They must shut up whilst men speak. Their views are wrong, men are right.

Anyone has the right to believe that the rights of trans people are more important than the rights of women (although I believe this is profoundly wrong). What they do not have the right to do is bully, belittle and threaten women who disagree with them; who are trying to protect their hard fought rights.

I despair.

No one is denying they exist. We just don't buy into the idea that men can be women. So it's a difference in belief.

Badenoch may have some unpleasant views but her views in respect of single sex places and similar are not amongst them.
Her expressed views on sex and gender are in line with a significant number of people.

For clarification. What they have mainly insisted is that homosapiens are a dimorphic species and that in the whole history of that species, not one human being has a) produced both large and small gametes from the same body or b) changed sex. These are immutable biological facts. If the statement that humans cannot change sex is interpreted as a wish that trans people didn't exist, then it's precisely that. An interpretation.

I don't think many women, either on the FWR boards or elsewhere, care particularly how others choose to present - with the exception that they object to being unwilling participants in someone else's fetish (again, this is not a sweeping accusation that all trans people are fetishists. But it's not outlandish to state that this breakdown in boundaries between those who generally use female facilities and the more recent infiltrators WILL be taken advantage of by predatory men).

Women are principally objecting to 'woman' becoming a dirty word, to the very language we use to describe ourselves being subject to erasure, and for safeguarding principles to be broken down on the basis of absurd definitions as to a 'woman' being anyone who says they're a woman. And yes, they want the constant assault on women's rights by the TRA lobby to stop.

Nowhere here is there a claim that 'trans people don't exist'. It's a silly, frivolous and meaningless objection. It's also tedious in its predictability.

Tennant is entitled to his views just as much as Badenoch is entitled to her views.

Taking his comment to its logical conclusion, if he wishes her to shut up then someone with an opposing view to his would want him to shut up. So then we end up with nobody saying anything.

I'm not a Tory, I'm sure there are many, many things I would disagree with Kemi Badenoch on. I don't wish her out of existence though, and it's not great for a white man to wish a black woman to not exist for the specific reason that she believes sex exists and matters - he didn't specify any other reasons.
