David Tennant: women should "shut up"

1000 replies

jacksonlamb · 26/06/2024 13:36

As a (now ex) David Tennant fan I was so disappointed to hear his speech yesterday. Whilst talking about trans rights he told his audience that he wanted a world where "we wake up and Kemi Badenoch doesn't exist anymore. I don't wish ill of her, I just wish her to shut up."

(There's some devious doublespeak here: if you wish someone didn't exist, you obviously wish them ill).

But more importantly, how dare he tell women to shut up about women's rights. Yet again powerful and privileged men tell women what they are and are not allowed to say. They must shut up whilst men speak. Their views are wrong, men are right.

Anyone has the right to believe that the rights of trans people are more important than the rights of women (although I believe this is profoundly wrong). What they do not have the right to do is bully, belittle and threaten women who disagree with them; who are trying to protect their hard fought rights.

I despair.

Shutting KB up won't fix this - you'll have to shut the rest of us up too!

ConfusingTrousers · 27/06/2024 20:37

wibblywobblywoo · 26/06/2024 13:50

So....that's alright then? 🤔🙄

Are you telling us there isn't a single woman you want to shut up?

PeterPedant · 27/06/2024 20:42

The MP who represents women he said should shut up about women's rights.

The fact that Kemi Badenoch is opposed to trans people's rights does not mean she supports women's rights. She is opposed to everyone's rights apart from those of the people holding wealth & power. You're falling into the my-enemy's-enemy-is-my-friend trap. Unless you are also a vicious far-right hatemonger like Kemi Badenoch, of course, in which case she maybe is your friend.

And the minister for women and equalities does not "represent" women any more than the secretary of state for Scotland represents Scotland.

If there is a woman that I don't want to listen to, I usually walk away or turn the TV off.

Everyone has a right to speak, even if they spout utter nonsense.

Also: everyone has a right to respond, and they have a right to ignore the response.

Notaflippinclue · 27/06/2024 20:54

Do you really think women want to go on about GC issues to others just to be called bigoted and homophobic and screamed at, go to LWS meetings and listen to what you are called - unprintable - it's often easier to hold your council but it doesn't change your mind - men cannot be women never not nohow

Sweetvalleyhigh1234 · 27/06/2024 20:58

bluebeck · 26/06/2024 13:37

So he didn’t say “women” should shut up.

Just one specific woman.

The context is it's aimed at all women isn't it.. anyone who agrees with her.

That wouldn't be all women. The majority would disagree with most of her views.

You seem to be another person failing to understand that Tennant was speaking about trans rights - it wasn’t a random interview.
do you think the majority of women think people can change sex and men who say they are women should be allowed in women’s spaces and sports as that is what you are saying?

ToWhitToWhoo · 27/06/2024 21:49

RantyRantington · 27/06/2024 17:10

Over 2000 people have voted now.
So much for most women not being interested

Women might be interested because Kemi Badenoch is a likely future Tory leader, not because of a specific preoccupation with this one issue.

As a woman, I am more preoccupied with women's reproductive rights. and she falls far short on this topic.

And what the fuck are "Trans people's rights"???
The right for men to invade women's spaces?
The right to force other people to accept their delusions?

Gymrabbit · 27/06/2024 22:10

in case there is any doubt how much of a misogynistic piece of shit tennant is, an interview has now surfaced on Twitter after the speech in which he calls women standing up for their rights ‘a tiny group of whinging fuckers’

so now it really is directed at all women who stand up for their rights - not just Badenoch.

dougalfromthemagicroundabout · 27/06/2024 22:13

It's interesting how no-one ever engages with the point that women are fine with trans-identifying female people using our spaces. So we're not anti- trans we just want safeguarding based on sex because the statistics show overwhelmingly this is effective.

DisappearingGirl · 27/06/2024 22:20

I think if he'd said "I think Kemi Badenoch is totally wrong because xyz" that would be absolutely fair enough. I think she's wrong on many issues.

I think it's the "shut up" phrase that really stings. And it's because so so many women who have spoken up about their worries about gender ideology have been told "shut up TERF", "shut up bigot", "shut up Karen". Men who speak up on this topic don't generally get told to shut up

KB is not 'far right'. 😂

  1. It’s depressing how much internalised misogyny there is on this thread.

  2. It was a disgusting thing to say. And hypocritical considering moments prior he was all for ‘live and let live.’ In essence, as long as HE agrees then it’s okay for you to talk.

  3. Kemi isn’t far right. Our right and left are both just shy of centre. Talk about speaking from ignorance.

  4. He won’t be smug for long. Women have been in this fight for a fair number of years now. We won’t go away. We won’t shut up.

You're twisting this - it's one woman... one woman with some very extreme and unpleasant views.

You think her desire to get trans ideology out of schools , to ensure that single sex spaces are retained is extreme?

Onedayatatime22 · 28/06/2024 00:06

@SammyScrounge I think her attitudes around women's rights overall are hugely hypocritical and her attitude to this issue in particular is divisive dog whistle politics.

Look at her voting record around access to abortion, equality rights, increasing the pension age - all of which impact massively on women.

I agree with her on single sex spaces but even a stopped clock is right twice a day. IMO she is vile, alienating and extreme in many of her views and I don't think she does anything for promoting our rights.

TheKeatingFive · 28/06/2024 00:09

Im not sure what you think makes it 'dog whistle' politics if you agree with her on this issue?

SpidersAreShitheads · 28/06/2024 00:13

Here's the clip that @Gymrabbit is referencing (second video of the two on the link).

Tennant just reinforcing the fact that women who are concerned about women's rights are just a "tiny little bunch of whinging fuckers who will be on the wrong side of history and they'll all go away".

Garlicnaan · 28/06/2024 00:22

I find it astonishing that people genuinely think Sunak, Badenoch and other politicians wouldn't change their position on this in an instant if they thought it would win them more votes.

Very good point. If you really care about women's rights beyond this single issue you need to look at the bigger picture.

I don't believe she is genuine in her reasons for raising this issue.
