David Tennant: women should "shut up"

1000 replies

jacksonlamb · 26/06/2024 13:36

As a (now ex) David Tennant fan I was so disappointed to hear his speech yesterday. Whilst talking about trans rights he told his audience that he wanted a world where "we wake up and Kemi Badenoch doesn't exist anymore. I don't wish ill of her, I just wish her to shut up."

(There's some devious doublespeak here: if you wish someone didn't exist, you obviously wish them ill).

But more importantly, how dare he tell women to shut up about women's rights. Yet again powerful and privileged men tell women what they are and are not allowed to say. They must shut up whilst men speak. Their views are wrong, men are right.

Anyone has the right to believe that the rights of trans people are more important than the rights of women (although I believe this is profoundly wrong). What they do not have the right to do is bully, belittle and threaten women who disagree with them; who are trying to protect their hard fought rights.

I despair.

There's a couple of posters on this thread expending an awful lot of energy and their time assuring us this is a topic no one cares about. I'd have just scrolled past if it was me

Me think the 'ladies" doth protest too much

Oh yes.

Oh Lord. I really hope this blatant lying goes away after the election.

BoredandLost · 27/06/2024 10:56

Noted. Only those in positions of power can speak out against government decisions. what a wonderful, amazing society that would be...

No, but when you think you have more of a right to speak on these issues than people who are literally paid to and voted for, then you need a reality check. Don’t forget, it was HIM who told HER to shut up, not the other way around, do you want to ‘note’ that too?

Kemi speaks for 99% of us! Ofc it matters. We all know what he meant I wish they didn’t exist and wpuld shut up. The irony of him being a man is astounding”

No she doesn’t. The vast majority of women put the trans issue way down their list of priorities, as poll after poll indicates.

A small minority of people with very loud voices and a lot of anger keep it going.

Do you have a link to the stats that support this claim, or are you just guessing?

RantyRantington · 27/06/2024 17:06

My guess is guessing. You never see any concrete stats with those sorts of wild claims.

Can you answer the other question please?

RantyRantington · 27/06/2024 17:10

Over 2000 people have voted now.
So much for most women not being interested

Yes, agree, but we need to know our place. 🙄

DawnBarton · 27/06/2024 17:55

It's not 'one women' its the Minister for Women and Equalities?

The MP who represents women he said should shut up about women's rights.

DawnBarton · 27/06/2024 17:58

The actual Minister FOR Women? The person who represents women and who must speak on women's rights? That's not just 'one women' and it's disingenuous to frame it as such

Hummingbird75 · 27/06/2024 18:56

What a horrid thing to say.
Appalling really.

I am minded to vote for the conservatives now, as I can not see any improvement happening with Labour and possibly things might get even worse for women. I am not sure why Labour have taken the stance they have, and I am wondering why women MPs in opposition have stayed so silent for so long. It is very worrying.

Naunet

No, I don’t know how to do links. I can google though and there are lots of articles showing that polls consistently show 3-4% listing trans issues in the top 5 or 10 of their electoral concerns over the past two years. Certainly no guessing.

There’s a suggestion up the thread that some posters aren’t genuine. I am! I’m a 60 year old woman, been on here since it began, a few years under this current name, two or three others over the years.

I just don’t agree with the majority on this thread about certain aspects of this issue and the horrible attitudes of some towards trans people. Most people I know irl don’t either. It’s just not something on their radar. People are entitled to hold differing opinions. Though acknowledging that is becoming a rarity.

RantyRantington · 27/06/2024 19:44

Perhaps if you can't do links Mrs.SkylerWhite you could give us the title and reference of one or two of these articles. I'd be very interested to read what you are referring to.

MrsSkylerWhite · 27/06/2024 19:52

I googled “is the trans issue important to UK voters” and lots of articles came up. Could you do the same?

You seem to be suggesting I’m making it up? Why would I do that when it’s very easy to find out yourself?

Why do you keep saying trans issues? It's women's rights issues. This has been pointed out to you.

MrsSkylerWhite · 27/06/2024 20:05

Fair enough, women’s issues.

This article published by YouGov on 1st June doesn’t list either in voters top concerns.

”General election 2024: what are the most important issues for voters?”

Abhannmor · 27/06/2024 20:07

Only here for the ratio as they say. Tennant was my favourite Dr in the reboot. Nevermind there's always Jon Pertwee.

Where did I say you weren't genuine? Total fabrication!

Mine was a genuine question and quite polite. My disgust on here is the way DT is using his child's identity in a public arena which I think is appalling. Read my earlier posts on the thread.

But you seem intent on not givng me a straight answer. If you can't quote your source but just vaguely say it's on Google, or I can't do a link, then that's not my problem. If you are going to quote stats be prepared to be able to back them up.

RantyRantington · 27/06/2024 20:16

Well that You Gov is full of issues of concern to women and their rights.
Health, Education everything in it has a womens rights dimension Mrs.SkylerWhite.

But I asked you about the trans rights article you were quoting as I was personally interested in that. You seem to be all over the place with what you are talking about.

MrsSkylerWhite · 27/06/2024 20:19

I apologise, RantyRantington. Sorry, it’s because someone upthread suggested that people with a different opinion to the majority on this thread weren’t genuine posters.

It’s all readily available if you want to know. I’ve just given the name of a You gov article from a couple of weeks ago, where women’s rights was not in the top ten of people’s voting issues. I’ve seen similar polls indicating voters’ main concerns on news and Newsnight in recent weeks and again women’s’ rights didn’t feature.

I see and understand from this thread that it’s a critical issue to some but I’m afraid in the grand scheme that concern just isn’t there in the general population.

MrsSkylerWhite · 27/06/2024 20:23

Not all over the place at all!

When I posted that I had googled the importance of trans issues to voters several articles came up. I was then told off for googling trans issues and told I should have looked for women’s’ rights. So I did.

Of course those things affect women! This thread is about women’s rights’ in respect of single sex spaces though, isn’t it?
