David Tennant: women should "shut up"

1000 replies

jacksonlamb · 26/06/2024 13:36

As a (now ex) David Tennant fan I was so disappointed to hear his speech yesterday. Whilst talking about trans rights he told his audience that he wanted a world where "we wake up and Kemi Badenoch doesn't exist anymore. I don't wish ill of her, I just wish her to shut up."

(There's some devious doublespeak here: if you wish someone didn't exist, you obviously wish them ill).

But more importantly, how dare he tell women to shut up about women's rights. Yet again powerful and privileged men tell women what they are and are not allowed to say. They must shut up whilst men speak. Their views are wrong, men are right.

Anyone has the right to believe that the rights of trans people are more important than the rights of women (although I believe this is profoundly wrong). What they do not have the right to do is bully, belittle and threaten women who disagree with them; who are trying to protect their hard fought rights.

I despair.

You make his wife sound like she is 21. She's 39!

I'm surprised to read now that he's 53. First, great skincare. Second, that really was an immature speech from him.

I personally think that David Tennant should remember his place frankly. Kemi is a politician, her job is to speak on things like womens rights. David Tennat is a pompous, out of touch, privileged lovey, who is paid to say the words OTHER PEOPLE write. Maybe he should stick to that.

Noted. Only those in positions of power can speak out against government decisions. what a wonderful, amazing society that would be...

unlike in the Labour Party world - in the Conservative Party world, anyone, male or female, whatever their skin colour or ethnicity can achieve success even if they have to compete with white men.

Then where are they? Where are all the women of colour in the Tory party?

I recommend you read my post in full.

You will see I have mentioned three women of colour, all of whom hold or have held some of the highest positions of state in the Conservative government in the last few years.

One of those three women, Kemi Badenoch, was recently in a shortlist of four to become the UK's prime minister. She is currently the bookmakers' favourite to be the next Conservative leader.

Women and people of colour have occupied most of the highest offices of state during the last few years. All without holding back white men to give them a headstart in the race, because - unlike Labour - the Conservatives believe women and people from ethic minorities can succeed on merit.

Will that do?

As part of the progressive media elite in one of the UK's wealthiest industries - film and theatre - famed for its nepotism and disproportionately staffed by the privileged, privately educated and well-connected - Tennant is absolutely in a position of power.

Unlike, say, JKR, who uses her position of power to speak on behalf of vulnerable and dsienfranchised women, Tennant uses it to espouse an ideology which is damaging to children, the mentally vulnerable and to women, and most recently has used it to wish a Black woman out of existence whilst standing on a stage at a five star elite awards ceremony.

Posting this for the second time.

That came AFTER she faced a backlash about saying it was trivial. she said it after realising she had screwed up. Do you really think she meant it, or was she just saving herself??

Sorry, I meant only those in positions of POLITICAL power.

Everyone else can shut up and not speak out, right? No one else must voice their opinion?

And JKR who agrees that women who disagree with her should be wiped out. SO supportive to women.

Pick and choose much?

Opinions are great. Wishing women to shut up until they don't exist is clearly violence-coded and is not fine.

Find me the exact quote, in full context, where she said this.

Not really. There are 365 Tory MPs. There's one black female MP. You can bluster all you like, the facts speak for themselves.

I think print both statements then people can decide. If you only print the first it doesn't give the whole picture.

Yes the threat is there - women know it.

He didn't say he wished 'women' would shut up- just one person
Your title is libellous!

A 'reasonable person' (the test of libel) can naturally extrapolate that what DT meant was that any women who shares KB's views on the importance of women's rights should also shut up.

Implication is clear

It's not libellous

a judge would laugh

I don't think that is a particularly reasonable assumption at all. But you do you.

Not in a position to get the links right now. But it was originally said by Posie Parker, retweeted by JK Rowling who doubled down and said she agreed.

Well you know what they say. That which can be asserted without evidence can be dismissed without evidence ....

JudyWinagain · 27/06/2024 11:31

The Overton Window has moved so far to the left when Kemi Badenoch is described as "far right" with no sense of sarcasm. Nuts.

Christ on a bike the Overton window really has moved if Kemi Badenoch is being hailed as a champion of women’s rights.

LOL, of course. Who else would I possible 'do'?

It's all a moot point as DT isn't taking MN to court (much as posh folks love to threaten each other with libel). He's too busy trying to live down the career embarrassment of showing himself up as a misogynist at the LBGTQ Awards.

Ah, yes. I must, obviously be lying.

I am sat in a hospital waiting room with very limited internet, unable to usefully google.

But yeah, just call me a liar. Why am I not surprised. Go vote for Johnny Mercer.
