David Tennant: women should "shut up"

1000 replies

jacksonlamb · 26/06/2024 13:36

As a (now ex) David Tennant fan I was so disappointed to hear his speech yesterday. Whilst talking about trans rights he told his audience that he wanted a world where "we wake up and Kemi Badenoch doesn't exist anymore. I don't wish ill of her, I just wish her to shut up."

(There's some devious doublespeak here: if you wish someone didn't exist, you obviously wish them ill).

But more importantly, how dare he tell women to shut up about women's rights. Yet again powerful and privileged men tell women what they are and are not allowed to say. They must shut up whilst men speak. Their views are wrong, men are right.

Anyone has the right to believe that the rights of trans people are more important than the rights of women (although I believe this is profoundly wrong). What they do not have the right to do is bully, belittle and threaten women who disagree with them; who are trying to protect their hard fought rights.

I despair.

Hilarious that so many of you think KB is a champion of women's rights. Have you actually looked at her voting record?

It's also a little patronising that some people appear to feel that KB should be immune from any criticism because she's black.

You seem confused, telling someone to shut up and that you wish they didn’t exist, is not ‘criticism’.

He hasn't told me to shut up

I love this😂

More of a champion for women's rights than David Tennant will ever be.

I must have missed the time that David Tennant voted against imposing censorship zones around abortion centres and giving women easier access to abortions.

KB did though. She is no friend to women.

She is a far greater advocate than Sir Keir will ever be!

Not all women. One specific far right woman.

😂 The Overton Window has moved so far to the left when Kemi Badenoch is described as "far right" with no sense of sarcasm. Nuts.

She described herself as a liberal Conservative in an interview I read.

Not according to Kemi, it isn't.

That wasn't according to Kemi. That was according to me.

The LGBTQ community are some of the least privileged in society.

Actually, according to a recent report by The Economist, gay men are amongst the wealthiest cohort in the UK with the most disposable income. Child gender dysphoria is most prevalently seen in the middle classes. Transwomen based on anecdata tend to be from middle class backgrounds. It's true that lesbains are fairly well represented in working class communities and there are a number of complex socio-economic reasons for this. But Lesbians are often terfs so let's not think about them.

Do you have a breakdown of attendees by race and background?

Nope, my source is my eyes, which showed me a sea of braying pink posh looking faces, all squiffy on their own smug sense of self-righteaousness as they guffawed at the notion of a Black woman being 'put in her place' by a posh white bloke.

Tennant isn't 'posh' btw.

Posh clothes, posh job, posh house, posh wife, luxury beliefs? The results of the test are...posh!

"Pink posh faces"..I'm surprised you didn't go all the way and say gammon.

I really dislike the phrase Hard Left, as it’s usually used as a stick to beat people with who vote left. However, I agree with you that some people - particularly on the left - have the views you mention here, and I don’t agree with that.

I really dislike the phrase Hard Left, as it’s usually used as a stick to beat people with who vote left.

And "far right" is an even more popular stick to beat people with mainstream conservative views, including women like Kemi Badenoch and Suella Braverman.

DT's vile attack on Kemi was no doubt - given the group he was speaking to - prompted by her position on protecting women in women only spaces. Her position should not be controversial and indeed an increasingly large number of people are starting to find the courage to speak up on this matter.

It's no wonder DT and his rabble of hate-filled misogynists are getting rattled, but that is no excuse for publicly declaring Kemi should no longer exist or should shut up. It is her job to speak up and I hope she continues to do so.

Both of these women of colour hold or have held senior positions in government through hard work and ability, despite the odds against them. Whether or not you agree with their particular brand of politics, the fact is they do represent the views of many ordinary people.

I have no doubt that the special brand of hatred spewed at them (and Priti Patel) by left-wing politicians and media is due - at least in part - to them being women of colour getting above themselves and not behaving as lefties think they should.

However much left-wing people try to demonise them and pretend otherwise, the fact is they have earned their success on merit.

They have achieved their success without deeply patronising "women only" or "ethnic minority only" shortlists, because - unlike in the Labour Party world - in the Conservative Party world, anyone, male or female, whatever their skin colour or ethnicity can achieve success even if they have to compete with white men.

See that's what i don't get - one politician has a voting record which shows they support women in a very important area where it really matters.

The other one voted against making accessing abortions safer, easier and less distressing for women. Not to mention this one is part of the party who has allowed the gender debate to get as far as it has. Everything that's happened in the last 14 years, happened on your Tory party's watch. KB has presided over it as minister for Equalities for almost 2 years. She's had far more influence than KS and yet look at everything that's happened. In what ways has she made anything better for women? The Tories have made everything worse for women.

The ONLY way you could possibly think KB was better than KS in terms of womens rights is if you're so blinkered and one track minded that the trans issue is the only one that's important to you.

It hasn’t just upset me - it’s upset millions of people that do not want to live in a racist country full of hate and division.

I can’t imagine why any woman of colour would even consider going into politics with such despicable attacks made on them daily - hourly. You do know they need 247 protection? How can that be in 2024!

We need more representation not less.

David is the very epitome of white male privilege.

Out of interest, did you feel the same when Kemi Badenoch said that Frank Hester's comments about Diane Abbott ("she makes me hate all black women" "she should be shot") were trivia??

“We need to move away from these things and actually focus on what matters to people.”
She added: “Now, this is trivia. I’m sorry, but I really do believe it is.
“I am afraid is not really in the high priorities of how we deal with racism in this country.”

https://www.independent.co.uk/news/uk/politics/kemi-badenoch-frank-hester-racism-comments-b2514323.html

I'm sorry, but can criticise what people say - I think Kemi is utterly ridiculous and has done nothing to support women. What David said had nothing to do with her skin colour. It was ill advised, but he isn't an MP, or donating millions to a political party. He can say he would prefer anyone to shut up - others have said it about him on here - and it doesn't have to be about their skin colour.

Kemi Badenoch dismisses Frank Hester race row as ‘trivia’

The cabinet minister also said Frank Hester’s comments weren’t ‘really about Diane Abbott’

Pink & posh = descriptors

Gammon = ugly slur

David Tennant: women should "shut up"
dougalfromthemagicroundabout · 27/06/2024 10:49

The shut up part of his comment wasn't the most objectionable bit it was wishing KB out of existence all together.

The next step would be to wish any women who want human rights out of existence all together. It would be so much nicer if there was no one opposing his righteous male views of how the world should work.

And it's not the first time he - a man - has said vaguely threatening things about women whose opinions he doesn't like.

Yes, it is clear that trans issues are the main concern for some posters on MN and they care very little about women rights otherwise.

It’s not really about trans / men but I do see how reinforcing that male focus shifts away from women and girls.

BoredandLost · 27/06/2024 10:53

Pelham678 · 27/06/2024 08:34

Absolutely.

I've experienced a lot of 'you should just shut up' kind of words from men who don't like women having opinions. I can only imagine what it's like being a black woman but I've seen the contempt thrown at Diane Abbott that just isn't shown to women like Ann Widdecombe to know that it's a different level.

As PP have said it was not said humorously at all but with anger and contempt and it's completely exposed the real DT underneath the cheeky chappy persona he normally shows. I'm not surprised he's married a much younger woman who probably doesn't challenge him.

You make his wife sound like she is 21. She's 39!
