David Tennant: women should "shut up"

1000 replies

jacksonlamb · 26/06/2024 13:36

As a (now ex) David Tennant fan I was so disappointed to hear his speech yesterday. Whilst talking about trans rights he told his audience that he wanted a world where "we wake up and Kemi Badenoch doesn't exist anymore. I don't wish ill of her, I just wish her to shut up."

(There's some devious doublespeak here: if you wish someone didn't exist, you obviously wish them ill).

But more importantly, how dare he tell women to shut up about women's rights. Yet again powerful and privileged men tell women what they are and are not allowed to say. They must shut up whilst men speak. Their views are wrong, men are right.

Anyone has the right to believe that the rights of trans people are more important than the rights of women (although I believe this is profoundly wrong). What they do not have the right to do is bully, belittle and threaten women who disagree with them; who are trying to protect their hard fought rights.

I despair.

Re: “nobody cares about David Tennant except maybe really young people” - back when I was in college (American definition of college) in the mid-2000s, all the “nerd girls” (both on campus and online) thought he was some kind of heartthrob. Also, the Very Online part of the Harry Potter fandom - which is largely adults who grew up with the books - seem to pay outsized attention to every political opinion expressed by anyone who was ever in an HP movie.

There are some women, and men, who are really concerned about gender ideology. Concerned about the impact on women’s sports, women’s safety, and the treatment of vulnerable children. Concerned that same sex attraction is suddenly not permissible, only same gender.

Concerned that it’s suddenly become “transphobic” to recognise biology and the very real differences that exist.

I am a left-leaning voter. The Tories are abhorrent. Corrupt.

The problem is that there’s not a left leaning party that is openly acknowledging that biology matters and that trans women aren’t actually women.

It’s not transphobic to say “you’re not a woman but go and live your best life, however you want. Be happy. But please understand that you can’t access single-sex spaces that are designated for women.”

We want trans people to be happy and safe but women are not a shield. Biology matters.

Women have already been assaulted in spaces that were supposed to be single sex. Told our feelings and safety don’t matter as much as the male-bodied individual.

In fairness to the left, they’re trying to be kind and inclusive. Willingness to accept gender ideology in many left wing people comes from a place of good intent but fails to recognise that by being inclusive to a tiny minority, many, many women are being compromised, put at risk, and in some cases excluded from spaces that they should have been able to regard as safe.

We know the right are trying to exploit this. None of us believe that the Tories actually care about women. We are just grateful that someone is willing to speak up when no one else seems willing to say the obvious. It really is the Emperor’s New Clothes.

Tennant has a track record of being offensive about women who believe in biology. What he said about Kemi was shitty but it’s not a surprise to anyone who follows this issue. Screenshot of what he said attached. I don’t think it was benign but it’s par for the course.

I believe this is a pivotal point in history. If our rights and our safety is given away I don’t know when or if we’ll ever get it back. We just want a left wing party to recognise women’s rights. It really isn’t much to fucking ask.

Yes - I think he made the "not exist" comment and suddenly realised what he had said and how it could be interpreted - and reined himself back very quickly.

I’ve got lots of very other outing posts on MN on the property board so I don’t mind saying I’m in Gloucestershire. My area is between the Tory and the LibDem candidates, neck and neck. Usually a very safe Tory seat but looking as if he might actually lose.

There was an interesting post on here before about spoiled votes and how no one cares why they’re spoiled (from someone who has worked at the counts before). I’m still erring towards a spoiled vote too in the vain hope that if there are a high number of spoiled votes, someone, somewhere might care enough to find out why….

they look at the spoiled votes. not to see what people say, but to argue that that vague mark in the box next to their name means that person wanted to vote for them. and then they argue the toss until they are blue in the face. And sometimes the vote counters (returning officers?) agree with them. So if you spoil your ballot - be careful how you do it.

I know many people are thinking positively about Labour and that they’ll fix things but this is my concern. Maybe not autumn but just generally if we see capital flight etc

I fear the publics reaction when they see Labour actually makes things even worse. Genuinely there isn’t the money for the ‘changes’ they promise.

cavalier · 26/06/2024 20:17

This argument about safe spaces has thankfully been put on the public psyche again … big mistake Tennant …
HUGE !!!

Weird I didn't get this in my notifications

But since 2005, I looked at him and thought ''weirdo''

I was 13 and saw a full grown man I just didn't like. Can't explain it.

When he was Dr Who I used to rather like him - he had a "twinkly" face - but the older he gets the less pleasant he looks. He seems to be increasingly angry, resentful and arrogant.

I don't like him at all, now.

In retrospect, I realised that I caused the actor with his character, and the real David Tennant was nothing like the Doctor. (And indeed - why should he be)

MalvernHillbilly · 26/06/2024 19:15

I’ve just listened to what Tennant actually said on the news. It comes across loud and strong that he’s talking about the day coming after the election when Badenoch won’t exist because the Tories will lose.
To ally yourself with a vile Tory because you agree with her opinion on aspects of trans rights is like saying you’re willing to be friends with a man who beats up his wife but is nice to his women friends.

Bollox!

He said nothing of the sort - he was targeting Badenoch.

Emotionalsupportviper · 26/06/2024 20:24

Meetingofminds · 26/06/2024 19:26

I imagine David’s wife and children must be mortified.

You imagine wrong.

Georgia Tennant is of similar pro-trans enthusiasm, and at least one of his children is "non-binary".

Thank you, yes, that’s a very good point you make. There’s been quite a bit written on the FWR board with links on how to spoil a vote without it being mistaken for a valid vote!

ChishiyaBat · 26/06/2024 20:28

Most men don't give a fuck about women or our rights, so why should bellend Tennant be any different? Look at his fashion choices, slogans on tshirts, badges saying "i'm safe" that was him right? He is a top bellsniff and I don't doubt that he'd say the same of any woman who disagreed with his views.
I don't care what side of the political divide anyone is on, all I want is for women to be taken seriously, for our rights to be taken seriously. I will always keep fighting and speaking up for myself and others regardless.

You're twisting this - it's one woman... one woman with some very extreme and unpleasant views.

Absolutely, this.

Regardless, her husband is a disgusting racist - how will she even manage the school run much less anything else.

Her other views matter. She's on the right wing of the Tory party. She doesn't care about trans rights because she doesn't care about rights generally. This is a situation where her general indifference to rights happens to coincide with your genuinely held beliefs about rights.

She's a stopped clock that happens to be telling the right time for you today

Spot on. Amazing how many people are responding to the dog whistle.

Shut up and female politician shouldn’t exist is what?

‘Dog whistle’ is that for Tennant

Like Sir Keir Starmer… for instance a trustworthy defender of women’s rights. Oh except he isn’t and appears to believe we have penises and hairy ballsacks. Ouch.

He certainly didn't care for the rights of the young girls raped and sex trafficked by the Rape Gangs.
Not only ignored by Police, Social Workers, Councilors etc but also by the CPS, the body he was, as DPP in charge of.

Why do you find women sticking up for their rights ‘unpleasant’?
Are you always misogynistic?

Ah, I'm London in what's now been declared a safe Labour seat now. Ugh, it's all so unsatisfactory.

I love it when people say "no one's talking about this. You're living in an echo chamber!" merrily from their own echo chamber. 🙄

Never liked him since he went on a chat show and laughed telling a story about how a group of deaf people had come to a play he was in and he deliberately made up words to try and confuse the BSL interpreter. I watched it and thought Jesus Christ, what an absolute cock.
