David Tennant: women should "shut up"

1000 replies

jacksonlamb · 26/06/2024 13:36

As a (now ex) David Tennant fan I was so disappointed to hear his speech yesterday. Whilst talking about trans rights he told his audience that he wanted a world where "we wake up and Kemi Badenoch doesn't exist anymore. I don't wish ill of her, I just wish her to shut up."

(There's some devious doublespeak here: if you wish someone didn't exist, you obviously wish them ill).

But more importantly, how dare he tell women to shut up about women's rights. Yet again powerful and privileged men tell women what they are and are not allowed to say. They must shut up whilst men speak. Their views are wrong, men are right.

Anyone has the right to believe that the rights of trans people are more important than the rights of women (although I believe this is profoundly wrong). What they do not have the right to do is bully, belittle and threaten women who disagree with them; who are trying to protect their hard fought rights.

I despair.

I completely agree @RantyRantington. Once I got past my outrage at him saying he wished she didn’t exist and should shut up because she has a different opinion to him, I realised what a terrible father he is.

Deliberately exposing your young child to a media storm (that he has created all by himself) is awful parenting. His child will now attract media attention no matter what path they take. A good father would protect his child not offer them up to be media fodder. I think it just demonstrates what a flawed person he is. A good actor but a terrible father.

They won't get that with either of the big two parties.

People need to start looking elsewhere. There are lots of independents standing. There are smaller parties. Support given to them is support not given to the Tories or Labour. And can start reforming the country without the terrifying prospect of being lead by the Reform party.

I wasn’t advocating for reform! 🤯 if you read the post I commented on aswell

^Women's rights are not just a women's issues they are men's issue too - men need educating here - so yes powerful men need to stand up and be counted.

It would be nice if they stood up and were counted for women's rights then, rather than undermine them!

Don’t be silly. Truss didn’t sell the country’s gold for a cut price, she was trying to rev up the country’s economy- there are many esteemed economists that still agree with her policies and vision.

Labour will bankrupt us again - guaranteed. This time we don’t have the cushion of the nation’s silver to flog.

And Black Wednesday?

Liz Truss tanked the economy. I thought the Tories were a safe pair of hands.

Like Sir Keir Starmer… for instance a trustworthy defender of women’s rights. Oh except he isn’t and appears to believe we have penises and hairy ballsacks. Ouch.

Ereshkigalangcleg · 26/06/2024 19:39

Keir Starmer is a weak, craven man who won't be able to rein in the infighting in his party, and the extremists. I don't think he'll last long.

I didn't think you were. That's just the three prospects and they're all rubbish. The support for the Reform party genuinely terrifies me.

I was just making the point that there's other choices, and if people went for those, there's a better chance of not being landed with one.

Everyone talks about it being "wasted votes" if you go "off script" and vote elsewhere. But if more people voted for what they wanted rather than picking what they think is the lesser evil, we'd not be in this situation.

It's our fault as a society for letting any of this happen. It's us that needs to change it.

OP, why spread hate?

Edited

'Spread hate'. Get a bloody grip.

SpidersAreShitheads · 26/06/2024 19:45

There are some women, and men, who are really concerned about gender ideology. Concerned about the impact on women’s sports, women’s safety, and the treatment of vulnerable children. Concerned that same sex attraction is suddenly not permissible, only same gender.

Concerned that it’s suddenly become “transphobic” to recognise biology and the very real differences that exist.

I am a left-leaning voter. The Tories are abhorrent. Corrupt.

The problem is that there’s not a left leaning party that is openly acknowledging that biology matters and that trans women aren’t actually women.

It’s not transphobic to say “you’re not a woman but go and live your best life, however you want. Be happy. But please understand that you can’t access single-sex spaces that are designated for women.”

We want trans people to be happy and safe but women are not a shield. Biology matters.

Women have already been assaulted in spaces that were supposed to be single sex. Told our feelings and safety don’t matter as much as the male-bodied individual.

In fairness to the left, they’re trying to be kind and inclusive. Willingness to accept gender ideology in many left wing people comes from a place of good intent but fails to recognise that by being inclusive to a tiny minority, many, many women are being compromised, put at risk, and in some cases excluded from spaces that they should have been able to regard as safe.

We know the right are trying to exploit this. None of us believe that the Tories actually care about women. We are just grateful that someone is willing to speak up when no one else seems willing to say the obvious. It really is the Emperor’s New Clothes.

Tennant has a track record of being offensive about women who believe in biology. What he said about Kemi was shitty but it’s not a surprise to anyone who follows this issue. Screenshot of what he said attached. I don’t think it was benign but it’s par for the course.

I believe this is a pivotal point in history. If our rights and our safety is given away I don’t know when or if we’ll ever get it back. We just want a left wing party to recognise women’s rights. It really isn’t much to fucking ask.

Sadly there’s no candidate in my area - I really was hoping there would be!!! I think they only have around 122 candidates in total IIRC.

But you’re right - I should have been a bit clearer, I meant any of the main parties or those that were available for me to vote for.

The only options I have here are Tory, Labour, LibDem, Green, Reform, and the Christian Alliance. The latter believe in biology but the rest of their policies are 😳

AInightingale · 26/06/2024 19:52

Powerful men often behave disgracefully. whether their politics are left or right. Tory, Labour, Republican, Democrat - they've all had a shedload of sex scandals and have been accused of appalling crimes against women, children and the vulnerable. The common denominator is maleness. When women point this out when trying to secure same-sex spaces and services, they are accused of peddling 'hate' and transphobia.

Meetingofminds · 26/06/2024 19:54

Bad ass Vaz that nasty bit of work is running again??????? Surely not!

ScribblingPixie · 26/06/2024 19:54

@SpidersAreShitheads Me too, gutted there's no SDP candidate. I wonder if we're in the same constituency as that's my choice too. Oh, but I've got one of Galloway's bunch too though. I'm having to spoil, I think.

Glengarrybell · 26/06/2024 19:55

Okay fair get- they all hate women. I’d still rather a Labour government for the female population because they are better for the poor, but the political class in the UK have a women problem- not the fun kind.

I’ve got lots of very other outing posts on MN on the property board so I don’t mind saying I’m in Gloucestershire. My area is between the Tory and the LibDem candidates, neck and neck. Usually a very safe Tory seat but looking as if he might actually lose.

There was an interesting post on here before about spoiled votes and how no one cares why they’re spoiled (from someone who has worked at the counts before). I’m still erring towards a spoiled vote too in the vain hope that if there are a high number of spoiled votes, someone, somewhere might care enough to find out why….

What the fuck, why would you spend your time thinking about whether you "trust" and actor. That's just weird.

Weird I didn't get this in my notifications

But since 2005, I looked at him and thought ''weirdo''

I was 13 and saw a full grown man I just didn't like. Can't explain it.

Onedayatatime22 · 26/06/2024 13:41

You're twisting this - it's one woman... one woman with some very extreme and unpleasant views.

What's extreme and unpleasant about saying that women have a right to privacy, dignity and safety?

What's unpleasant and extreme about insisting that the law defines terms used in statutes?

What's unpleasant and extreme about trying to ensure that children are not rushed into irrevocably damaging their bodies?

Tennant singled out this one woman because she's a politician, and he was going for a cheap crowd-pleaser, but if you think he feels any differently about any other woman who disagrees with him on this topic, I think you'd find you were mistaken

missmollygreen · 26/06/2024 20:08

wibblywobblywoo · 26/06/2024 13:50

So....that's alright then? 🤔🙄

So you have never wanted anyone to shut up before?
I find that hard to believe

EasternStandard · 26/06/2024 20:08

Meetingofminds · 26/06/2024 19:21

So once Labour have erased women entirely, silenced the nation and bankrupted the economy- we will be ready for a strong leader like Kemi to step forward.

The next four years wlll be horrendous for most of the country except for the activists and the ‘impartial’ BBC (one and the same) if they do somehow win.

Are people actually going to vote for a spectacular car crash created by total incompetents?

I have no idea but the threads will be interesting come Christmas if they do. You made your bed springs to mind, as the mass redundancies roll in over the autumn there will be plenty of buyers remorse - and we see mass capital flight. Don’t say I didn’t warn you.

I know many people are thinking positively about Labour and that they’ll fix things but this is my concern. Maybe not autumn but just generally if we see capital flight etc

Brefugee · 26/06/2024 20:09

To ally yourself with a vile Tory because you agree with her opinion on aspects of trans rights is like saying you’re willing to be friends with a man who beats up his wife but is nice to his women friends.

eh? i'm not allying myself with any vile tories, Badenoch or otherwise. Again for the hard of thinking it is perfectly possible to agree with someone on one single issue and nothing else that they believe in. I agree with her on the fact that nobody can change sex. And then i voted labour because i'm not an idiot.
