David Tennant: women should "shut up"

1000 replies

jacksonlamb · 26/06/2024 13:36

As a (now ex) David Tennant fan I was so disappointed to hear his speech yesterday. Whilst talking about trans rights he told his audience that he wanted a world where "we wake up and Kemi Badenoch doesn't exist anymore. I don't wish ill of her, I just wish her to shut up."

(There's some devious doublespeak here: if you wish someone didn't exist, you obviously wish them ill).

But more importantly, how dare he tell women to shut up about women's rights. Yet again powerful and privileged men tell women what they are and are not allowed to say. They must shut up whilst men speak. Their views are wrong, men are right.

Anyone has the right to believe that the rights of trans people are more important than the rights of women (although I believe this is profoundly wrong). What they do not have the right to do is bully, belittle and threaten women who disagree with them; who are trying to protect their hard fought rights.

I despair.

I think Tennant was clumsy but ultimately has a point

That KB shouldn’t exist? That he dreams of waking up and her not existing? That he doesn’t agree with free speech - well, at least not for women?

And no, he wasn’t clumsy, he was vicious.

I've seen many posts over the years which say this, how many times have you seen something like "not this again" on a thread? Loads. People have even said that they think this, on this thread.

People are REALLY turned off by the fact that its debated over and over, and with how some of the GC posters can be incredibly absolutist and aggressive towards those who have even a slightly differing opinion.

Some people will be but you said most and you can't evidence that it's most and not just some.

Effiebreast · 26/06/2024 17:53

I agree but equally being gaslit by certain posters that all is fine and dandy in Tory Britain is infuriating. Can’t we acknowledge that the Tories are shit and Labour need to get their act together on this issue. This government simply doesn’t deserve another 5 years of ineptitude.

And Labour don’t get the moral high ground on this issue.

They have their act together on this issue. Woman need to shut up and share!
The Equality act is working according to Labour.🤯 and they have said it doesn’t need changing.

Look around, it isn’t!!!

Labour want women to worry about stuff that affects others more because our rights are a non issue apparently.
51% of the population and they just don’t care!!

Anyone who wants equal rights doesn’t vote on a wing and a prayer

Effiebreast · 26/06/2024 18:09

@ova I agree that they’ve had time to prepare. It’s disappointing.
I don’t think they should get lumped in with the Tories though. Even when they were last in power they weren’t has bad as this lot.

Please explain what is vile about wanting biological women to have safe spaces? Please.

Starting this by saying that I totally agree women need safe spaces.

But, someone can be vile and have some views that you agree with.

Two things can be true at once. And a stopped clock is right twice a day.

People aren't saying otherwise.

However, David attacked Kemi on the basis of her stance on gender, not on any of her other views.

So deviating from that has been frustrating.

On this issue, Tennant is a wrong'un.

Lets see

Tony Blair :

Initiated PFI contracts into the NHS
Started University Tuition Fees
Iraq War
Failed to deliver on special schools he had promised to build

Gordon Brown

Sold off Forests and our gold stock.

I have my own issues with the Tories, not saying they are angels.

But I think because it has been so long, that people have forgotten Labour's flaws.

Underthinker · 26/06/2024 18:14

Aladdinzane · 26/06/2024 17:53

Most people using MN don't come on these threads anymore, so a poll isn't representative. They don't come on because they are tired of this issue being shoehorned into every discussion and the venom with which GC posters address others that might have a slightly differing opinion.

Why is it top of trending if most people don't come on these threads then?

Why does it have about ten times as many votes as other AIBUs that started at a similar time today?

Poolstream · 26/06/2024 18:19

TheKeatingFive · 26/06/2024 16:08

You already know the answer to this.

I have a ten year old. He hasn't a bloody clue what 'non-binary' is because no one is filling his head with nonsense.

I wondered if they were learning about it in school.

Typical inflammatory response with no backing from their manifesto.
Also
Think you’re forgetting at the very least the 51% the Conservatives are supporting who have been abandoned by Labour, Libdems and Greens

How has the Tory government done with levelling up ? Northern power house ?

EasternStandard · 26/06/2024 18:23

Whoever is in will be facing a different reality

Hence the IFS talking about conspiracy of silence over spending cuts and higher taxes

Very different time to when Labour were last in

And no PFI moving debt off books

Just a reminder to everyone that there's other options aside from Tory or Labour.

Effiebreast · 26/06/2024 18:24

@EasternStandard well yes. And hopefully folk will give them a chance. None of this short-termism that stops governments making big transformative policies.

Thelnebriati · 26/06/2024 18:25

@Effiebreast You can add Sure Start to that list. The Tories scrapped it, and the outcome was so bad they are going to start them up again.

EasternStandard · 26/06/2024 18:27

The policies so far are very small fry and possibly damaging, the two taxes they are introducing will shift behaviour, likely not in a beneficial way

If they want to sell in bigger ways to fix things I have a few I’d like to hear about.

They took us to war which they lied over and people died.!!!!

Id love to see the figures on how all that has affected the budget
because last time they were in Government they left the country in poverty
They have no idea how to manage anything

Money doesn’t grow on trees and when the electorate wise up they’re out and the Conservatives have to pick up the pieces and are seen as ‘the bad guys’ when they have to cost cut.

And as this is a thread about woman's rights

They have No idea about woman’s rights.

apologies for the derail away from the issue OP !

Exactly.

Notaflippinclue · 26/06/2024 18:36

Reform say they will ban trans ideology - before you pile in - this fear of putting your head above the parapet is very real - whether it be GC views - which way you vote - Israel - Immigration, you name it and you might get threatened and abused - the silent majority are having a real dilemma at the moment - I think both parties need a good kicking, they aren't listening

pointythings · 26/06/2024 18:36

I find the GC women on here and their support for the Sainted Kemi very amusing.

Her voting record is here: https://www.theyworkforyou.com/mp/25693/kemi_badenoch/saffron_walden/votes#home

Lots of things she scuppered which adversely affect women. But no, she's golden.

I'm with David Tennant on this one.

Voting record - Kemi Badenoch, former MP, Saffron Walden

See how Kemi Badenoch voted on topics like Employment, Social Issues, Foreign Policy, and more.

Just a reminder to everyone that there's other options aside from Tory or Labour.

In terms of womens rights there’s only Reform and they want to take away Trans rights which should never be a fall back. Unless you’ve got a lovely caring Independent who can stand up to the ‘shut up it’s my way or no way’ Labour stance on this subject.

Women need a strong voice in Parliament
