David Tennant: women should "shut up"

1000 replies

jacksonlamb · 26/06/2024 13:36

As a (now ex) David Tennant fan I was so disappointed to hear his speech yesterday. Whilst talking about trans rights he told his audience that he wanted a world where "we wake up and Kemi Badenoch doesn't exist anymore. I don't wish ill of her, I just wish her to shut up."

(There's some devious doublespeak here: if you wish someone didn't exist, you obviously wish them ill).

But more importantly, how dare he tell women to shut up about women's rights. Yet again powerful and privileged men tell women what they are and are not allowed to say. They must shut up whilst men speak. Their views are wrong, men are right.

Anyone has the right to believe that the rights of trans people are more important than the rights of women (although I believe this is profoundly wrong). What they do not have the right to do is bully, belittle and threaten women who disagree with them; who are trying to protect their hard fought rights.

I despair.

People always find more important issues than the (well grounded) fears of women.

Why should I ever expect this to change, right?

Like feeding their kids ? Ensuring schools are well funded ? Those kind of insignificant things ?

Ereshkigalangcleg · 26/06/2024 17:27

In a way it’s worse that he said it about one specific woman. It’s not just that he wants her to shut up, it’s that he wants to wake up and have her not exist. That’s really fucking nasty, whatever you think of Kemi.

I think David Tennant is an arrogant twat, but I don’t want him to not exist. He stinks of misogyny IMO.

This. He knows full well how it sounded, and that's why he added in the mealy mouthed "I don't wish her ill".

Aladdinzane · 26/06/2024 17:27

Also, the fact that you have mangled what DT said so badly to get it to mean what you want, makes most people disengage with you too.

No impact.

Ooh look a squirrel.

What a great way for you to miss the point eh?

Most people aren't convinced by TRA arguments either, they don't think much at all about this issue, because it doesn't effect them much.

They see the obsession here as a bit nuts.

I would agree that MN is well known for having a group of posters who are obsessed about trans issues. It's the same posters on these threads and most people don't engage with them.

Ereshkigalangcleg · 26/06/2024 17:28

Is that what you tell trans "rights" activists too?

On you. If you don’t give a toss about men in women’s sports etc you’re not going to start no matter which male celeb attacks a female politician.

User1974 · 26/06/2024 17:30

The poll results here are incredibly encouraging to women who care about gay men, lesbians and women 😆
Stamer needs to change is policy of he wants his super majority....

Aladdinzane · 26/06/2024 17:24

Hmmm funny that, people ARE talking about it to YOU who is interested in it.

and then when you are not there they say "my god she's obsessed."

I didn't say they were talking to me, or that the conversation were prompted by me. i said they were conversation i have overheard.

Aladdinzane · 26/06/2024 17:31

EasternStandard · 26/06/2024 17:25

If you were right and women were having no impact TRAs wouldn’t need to be so angry would they?

All that online abuse, all those threats and male violence. Just because you’re ignoring those violent men doesn’t mean squat.

And why do you think your view matches others? It’s a kind of over self belief that doesn’t stack up

If people really thought it was important then it would be a major issue in this election.

It really isn't.

It's been latched on to by certain politicians because its a fairly divisive subject and they know that if they say the magic words you want to hear then they could win your vote, they know they won't win the votes of people who disagree with them already, because they disagree on so many other issues.

The fact that they know this, and have backed policies which are far more damaging to far many more women and girls, rather undermines your points about caring for their saftey.

Most people see this.

MotherofChaosandDestruction · 26/06/2024 17:32

wombat15 · 26/06/2024 17:15

Inevitably you will mix with people who agree with you. Extreme people always do.

If you knew me, you would laugh at this. I'm a lefty and most people don't care about my progressive views or nodded along in agreement. It came as a shock that I didn't believe men could be women. They all thought I'd be riled up at them not agreeing TWAW.

Even most of my lefty friends don't agree TWAW. We are not extreme, we are sensible. I wish well on those people who are unhappy in their body but it doesn't mean I agree that women should be disregarded for having concerns and arguing for their rights.

VeryOldMan · 26/06/2024 17:32

Onedayatatime22 · 26/06/2024 13:41

You're twisting this - it's one woman... one woman with some very extreme and unpleasant views.

And what extreme and unpleasant views are these?
Her refusal to accept that women should accept that some "women" can have penises and be entitled to use woman only spaces?

SpudleyLass · 26/06/2024 17:32

Effiebreast · 26/06/2024 17:27

Like feeding their kids ? Ensuring schools are well funded ? Those kind of insignificant things ?

Where in the fudge did I ever say those were insignificant?

My deciding factor will ultimately be SEN provision.

But women and girls are still pretty damn important to me.

Combine the two - isn't it awful there is only ONE autism school for girls only in the entire country?

Racism is allowed to Dianne Abbott by donors to the Tory party and dismissed, racism from the former leader of the Tory party was passed off as "humour".

Give examples of the racism against the Tories from Labour.

Diane Abbott I believe, is the most abused person in parliament. She receives a tsunami of hate mail and social media messages.

Still bollocks.

Defining what a woman or a girl is, remains of extreme importance for obvious reasons.

Downplaying women's fears isn't a flex.

User1974 · 26/06/2024 17:33

Personally I disagree with Kemi on pretty much every single issue except this one. But this issue effects every aspect of women and girls lives. So this is a MASSIVE very important issue.
Stamer is trying to fudge it. Left leaning women like Rowling, Bindel et al are doing everything they can to call him to account but he has his fingers in his ears. He is a disgrace.

Ah that old chestnut from posters who tell us how much they don’t go near threads. And then turn up.

Always going on about ‘trans issues’ as if women don’t feature. I wonder why

I'm sure people would if they started a thread telling people that they should vote for the Tories because they support trans rights.

What he said was chilling.

Telling her to shut up was bad.

Saying that say ''in the world we want AND Kemi ( a very specific person ) doesn't exist anymore)

No, no gaslighting. That was a dark comment to make and I think he realised it immediately.

Many people spoke out on here and on sm and rightly so in regards to Dianne Abbott (not enough Tory's and of course they should not have accepted the money)

I can remember Priti Patel complaining about a racist cartoon of her in The Guardian, strangely hardly any discussion around this. The underhand racism towards Sunak is often ignored

Its not acceptable regardless if you are a Tory or Labour its not about Tories being racist towards Labour or visa versa its about it never being acceptable or being justified away

It's hard to realise that most people don't care about something you are clearly passionate about.

But it's the truth. It's why the 3 main party MPs fudged the questions that were bombarded at them from here on Women's hour, they know saying the magic words you want to hear is actually a vote loser.

I despise the political party that she stands for, I despise the vast majority of their beliefs and attitudes - however, when a man wishes for a woman to not exist anymore (bar God/the Rapture or Alien abductions being real), the only way she will cease to be is through death, so that is what he is wishing for. A woman to be wiped off the face of the planet for the crime of not agreeing with him.

SpudleyLass · 26/06/2024 17:40

Aladdinzane · 26/06/2024 17:37

They're afraid of the trans extremists.

The ones who threaten death and cancellations. I don't believe that you're not aware of such people.

That is the only logical conclusion as most people seem to be very much gender critical.

Gender/trans ideology is the true fringe issue. Why give so much to such (allegedly) a small minority?

Why ignore the concerns of 50% of the population in their favour?

Because women aren't being as extreme.

If I had to hazard a guess, I'd say that most politicians are waiting for the winds of change to blow over into TERF favour again. Which I do believe is happening, slowly but surely.

I mentioned in a previous comment that Starmer has now said that most women don't have a penis. Not good enough but a distinct change from his cervix claim.
