David Tennant: women should "shut up"

1000 replies

jacksonlamb · 26/06/2024 13:36

As a (now ex) David Tennant fan I was so disappointed to hear his speech yesterday. Whilst talking about trans rights he told his audience that he wanted a world where "we wake up and Kemi Badenoch doesn't exist anymore. I don't wish ill of her, I just wish her to shut up."

(There's some devious doublespeak here: if you wish someone didn't exist, you obviously wish them ill).

But more importantly, how dare he tell women to shut up about women's rights. Yet again powerful and privileged men tell women what they are and are not allowed to say. They must shut up whilst men speak. Their views are wrong, men are right.

Anyone has the right to believe that the rights of trans people are more important than the rights of women (although I believe this is profoundly wrong). What they do not have the right to do is bully, belittle and threaten women who disagree with them; who are trying to protect their hard fought rights.

I despair.

He didn't tell "women" to shut up. He told a woman to shut up for being bigoted.

Jeremy Clarkson technically only targeted Meghan Markle.

It was still deemed a racist and misogynist article, was it not?

dougalfromthemagicroundabout · 26/06/2024 17:17

I don't think you get more bigoted than wishing someone out of existence - there are very few ways to achieve that which don't involve violence.

Loveofmine · 26/06/2024 17:17

Aladdinzane · 26/06/2024 17:15

Not a load of crap.

No one talks about it.

You couldn't even get 3 female politicians from the main parties to say what you wanted to hear on a show aimed at women.

Because no one really thinks it's a big issue.

The reason they won’t say it is because the braying masses of deluded people will attack their jobs, themselves and their families. There is a reason Rosie Duffield been given extra security and can’t attend hustings.

Women being cowed into silence, is not a surprise to anybody who has been paying attention.

Ugh, this comment.

Do you know how many of us really don't hate those with actual dysphoria?

By your logic, you could accuse me of transphobia.

Really, I'm more of a misandrist.

I was raped at 16, and sexually assaulted twice (by two men, neither of whom I actually knew).

These happened in public spaces.

Ain't no fucking way, no how, that I will accept the misogynistic abuse from the likes of David Fucking Tennant - seriously, Eccleston is superior as a Dr - and the minimisation of fears of vulnerable women and girls as ''transphobia''.

If we have to accept, on no evidence, that men's spaces are too violent for them - there is zero evidence of this being the case in the UK - then they have to listen to the flagrant violent misogyny that is well evidenced against us women and girls.

You claim to care about women and girls but have stood up for Tennant the Twat here, rather than Kemi.

Actions speaker loud than words. Its easier than ever to come out as a Terf.

This post is great. I’m sorry you went through what you went through- you are not alone. It’s so unjust and so frustrating that people don’t understand this.
What you say gets to the heart of the matter. Trans women and natal women are scared of the same thing, they really are. Why do trans women want to be in women’s spaces? Because we know men will make it hell for them in male only spaces. Why do women not want anyone with a penis in women’s spaces? Because there are only two types of people with penises in women’s spaces- 1) trans women taking shelter from the threat of male only spaces (not many of these) and 2) Perverted men who will take advantage of any loophole available to gain access to women when they are vulnerable (absolutely fucking loads of these, loads).

I don’t think either should be made vulnerable but frankly I’m more worried about girls and women because I know that even the threat of this happening (intact male in a female only space) could have a profound effect on the way they get to live their lives.

Ultimately I think it’s high time we made toilets, changing rooms, prisons, hospitals safe for everyone all the time. That wouldn’t solve all the issues but it would be a start.

Sure TRAs never attack women who are speaking out

Never hurt abuse or threaten online or turn up to events and physically hurt women

Tennant is an odious man and his views on the position of Equalities Minister not existing doesn't even make sense.

Even with an Equalities Minister, even with the Equality Act - he can carp on about ''common decency'' but legislation helps protect the vulnerable.

Advocating for those hard legislative protections to no longer be in place and allowing the truly vulnerable to rely on the mercy of others, is mind boggling.

Not least of which because of that allegedly oppressed community he is so ardently a supporter for.

If no Equalities Minister existed, what would happen to this allegedly vulnerable demographic?

Nah I'm sick of TRA shite and TRA inconsistencies. Make it make fucking sense and stop allowing white MEDIOCRE men gleefully tear down women.

But you would allow black mediocre men to do so? Why does race have to be constantly dragged in to try and boost an argument?

HRTQueen · 26/06/2024 17:19

Racism is allowed towards Tory MP's and often its dismissed

Rishi Sunak, Priti Patel and Kemi Badenoch

worse it is often justified as they have political views some do not agree with

Why do these fucking actors really think it matters what they say. He is an absolute A hole and he should shut up.
I hope my fav Michael Sheen dosnt agree with him. Fucking men.!!!!

This is an interesting question.

When did actors start thinking they had some extra insight on social issues that the rest of us need to hear? I'm with Ricky Gervais on this one.

I've never been a fan of Dr Who, but I have liked Tennant in other things. I don't need to like him as a person though. He can be a good actor AND an idiot.

Stonewall - very unbiased selection there.

Not sure what is unprivileged about feeling uncomfortable in a medical setting or not feeling comfortable to attend a LGBT event. I’d also like to see what the definition of a transphobic remark is - if I call a man in a dress a man in a dress as is factually correct o doubt that would be considered transphobic. That says nothing about their place and status in society.

You asked me for facts on how the LGBTQ community are some of the least privileged in society. I gave you some facts. You're choosing to mock people who suffer disproportionately from suicidal ideation, poverty, poor health outcomes and hate crime.

Wish I was you.

Ooh look a squirrel.

What a great way for you to miss the point eh?

Most people aren't convinced by TRA arguments either, they don't think much at all about this issue, because it doesn't effect them much.

They see the obsession here as a bit nuts.

White man telling a black woman to shut up. He should hang his head in shame.

Why? Because he's white? Who's racist now!

JudgeJ · 26/06/2024 17:19

I normally don't bring race into these things at all.

It just so happens I believe it relevant this time.

Tennant is an ok actor - I've mentioned before I preferred Eccleston.

Tennant, as a white actor from a relatively privileged background won't have gone through the same experiences as Kemi.

So I stand by what I said.

AquaLeader · 26/06/2024 17:22

The OP is misrepresenting the situation.

By saying this, I am not accusing all posters of misrepresentation.

Sarahconnor1 · 26/06/2024 17:23

no one ever talks about it

People in my local are talking about it, people at my work are talking about it,

And I live in a semi rural red area.

It might be people aren't raising it on the doorstep because depending on which party you are canvassing for, they just don't see the point.

Hmmm funny that, people ARE talking about it to YOU who is interested in it.

and then when you are not there they say "my god she's obsessed."

People always find more important issues than the (well grounded) fears of women.

Why should I ever expect this to change, right?

If you were right and women were having no impact TRAs wouldn’t need to be so angry would they?

All that online abuse, all those threats and male violence. Just because you’re ignoring those violent men doesn’t mean squat.

And why do you think your view matches others? It’s a kind of over self belief that doesn’t stack up

Effiebreast · 26/06/2024 17:26

Brefugee · 26/06/2024 16:59

don't be so patronising. You think that everyone here is stupid or something?

In the context of what he was talking about, Badenoch doesn't have abhorrent views.

In the wider view? she's a tory and therefore only about further boosting the rich and priveleged. That's abhorrent.

I just wish people would admit that the tories have been abysmal in most respects.
They may have latched onto this to snaffle a few more votes and that’s it.
Saying that the tories aren’t well known for being tolerant. They despised single mums (women), still do, benefit claimants, migrants, even gay people back in the day because it didn’t fit in with their ‘Christian’ viewpoint so I guess trans people are just seen as a bit ‘perverted’ which actually fits in with the reasoning on this thread. Most of these posters will support Miriam Cates who’s on the evangelical US Christian spectrum and many of her beliefs aren’t exactly great either despite being GC.

Racism is allowed to Dianne Abbott by donors to the Tory party and dismissed, racism from the former leader of the Tory party was passed off as "humour".

Give examples of the racism against the Tories from Labour.

So he didn’t say “women” should shut up.

Just one specific woman.

Yes, this.

I wish nigel farage would shut up, that doesn't make me a man-hater
