David Tennant: women should "shut up"

1000 replies

jacksonlamb · 26/06/2024 13:36

As a (now ex) David Tennant fan I was so disappointed to hear his speech yesterday. Whilst talking about trans rights he told his audience that he wanted a world where "we wake up and Kemi Badenoch doesn't exist anymore. I don't wish ill of her, I just wish her to shut up."

(There's some devious doublespeak here: if you wish someone didn't exist, you obviously wish them ill).

But more importantly, how dare he tell women to shut up about women's rights. Yet again powerful and privileged men tell women what they are and are not allowed to say. They must shut up whilst men speak. Their views are wrong, men are right.

Anyone has the right to believe that the rights of trans people are more important than the rights of women (although I believe this is profoundly wrong). What they do not have the right to do is bully, belittle and threaten women who disagree with them; who are trying to protect their hard fought rights.

I despair.

In a way it’s worse that he said it about one specific woman. It’s not just that he wants her to shut up, it’s that he wants to wake up and have her not exist. That’s really fucking nasty, whatever you think of Kemi.

I think David Tennant is an arrogant twat, but I don’t want him to not exist. He stinks of misogyny IMO.

I guess extreme and unpleasant depend where you start from.

This Croslandite lefty thinks she's extreme. My perception she's unpleasant is based on her performance on radio interviews on both BBC and Times Radio.

Like Farage she's thin skinned and aggressive and dismissive when challenged.

Black women have been labelled 'aggressive' since time began even when they are merely being assertive or forthright.

Nobody really cares much about this issue outside Mumsnet,

Correction. People think they don't care much about it as long as they don't really understand the issue and think it's just about a small group of intersex people and young transsexuals desiring access to hormone treatment.

As soon as it's explained to them (as I do at every reasonable opportunity) that in fact this is an issue of women's spaces, sports, vulnerable children and male predators, they suddenly start to care. A lot. And to be very much on Kemi's side of the table as opposed to David Tennants.

"As soon as it's explained to them (as I do at every reasonable opportunity) that in fact this is an issue of women's spaces, sports, vulnerable children and male predators, they suddenly start to care. "

Nope, you're wrong.

Nobody really cares about this issue outside of MN.

The people that you talk to nod along and agree with you, but in their head they're thinking that you're totally obsessed and quite frankly a bit weird. They agree because it's easier than contradicting you.

Most people see the your claims of protecting the vulnerable the same way that they view Tommy Robinson's claims of protecting young women, as a cover for bigoty.

You want to see the fact that most people don't think this is a big issue, and that there are far many more important issues in this election for women and girls? Go listen to Women's hour from last week. You lot spammed their emails asking the " what is a woman" question and they discussed the situation at some length, yet not one of the politicians from the 3 main parties would say the magic words you wanted, and they basically fudged the question. Even on a nationally aired show dedicated to women's issues, you couldn't get the answers you wanted.

Because nobody really cares.

They do see that, because of this one issue, you have chosen to side with politicians that have supported or support policies that make life far worse for far many more women and girls than are impacted by trans issue. They see this and they realise that you don't really care about women and girls at all.

So they stop listening.

All those tens of thousands of threads here, millions of words, the tens of thousands of hours you have spent in front of a screen.

Nobody really cares, you have wasted your time, you have had no impact.

I agree. The fact is, the election is imminent and he could easily have said he couldn't wait to get rid of the Tories to secure his big cheer. But no, he very much chose to single out a woman.

He said Kemi Badenoch not "women". She doesn't give a shit about the rights of most women in the UK and certainly not refugees.

Oh and David Tennant will continue to be very popular.

No one really cares.

Except this is bollocks and not the fringe issue people like to claim.

If it were such a non matter, why all the death and rape threats towards JK?

Plenty of people on FB, for example, prove that even more men as women care about this and don't agree with gender ideologues.

Anneofa1000days · 26/06/2024 17:07

Why do these fucking actors really think it matters what they say. He is an absolute A hole and he should shut up.
I hope my fav Michael Sheen dosnt agree with him. Fucking men.!!!!

How dare they support their child, eh? Conversion "therapy" ahoy! That'll learn 'em.

Edited

Pretending to your child that they can be the opposite sex if they wear different clothes and change their pronouns is the opposite of 'support'.

He has been popular since 2005.

Never could figure out why and I was 13 then.

I will admit to a bit of schadenfreude though - I've never trusted him and now he has given me a reason as to why not trust him.

Cheers Dave.

True some men use threat and aggression, sometimes violence

They care because they can tell women have an impact. And women although that’s usually abuse

Tbf Eastern I am not surprised - she is the wrong kind of black woman isn't she? Wrongthink so she deserves it!

Imagine the furore if a right wing actor had said this about Diane Abbott!

I said some of the least privileged
https://www.stonewall.org.uk/lgbtq-facts-and-figures

Stonewall - very unbiased selection there.

Not sure what is unprivileged about feeling uncomfortable in a medical setting or not feeling comfortable to attend a LGBT event. I’d also like to see what the definition of a transphobic remark is - if I call a man in a dress a man in a dress as is factually correct o doubt that would be considered transphobic. That says nothing about their place and status in society.

RarePoster · 26/06/2024 17:09

Unbelievable! What has it got to do with him? This is a women's issue and he should shut up 😡

What a load of crap. All the people I know are talking about this and think it's ridiculous. The teenagers I know also think it's absolutely barmy that people actually believe you can be the opposite sex. The idea of men competing in women's sport has made many people think again about being supportive of this agenda.

Some of those people also won't vote for labour now because of Keir Starmer's lack of understanding of what a woman is. I probably will vote for labour but unwillingly. I am more minded to spoil my ballot paper but realistically I'll vote for Keir because they are the least worse option.

ActivePeony · 26/06/2024 17:13

Scruffily · 26/06/2024 16:16

It's perfectly obvious that this has precisely zero to do with her colour. Claiming racism where you know perfectly well that it does not exist is pretty objectionable.

And yet Kemi - as a black woman - pointed out the hideous optics of this foolish white twat wishing that she did not exist.

No one talks about it.

You couldn't even get 3 female politicians from the main parties to say what you wanted to hear on a show aimed at women.

Because no one really thinks it's a big issue.

@MotherofChaosandDestruction barmy is the exact word to describe it. Nobody actually believes trans women are women and trans men are men. For some reason scores of people and organisations are playing along with a complete fantasy. I don’t know how we’ve gotten into this situation.
