David Tennant: women should "shut up"

1000 replies

jacksonlamb · 26/06/2024 13:36

As a (now ex) David Tennant fan I was so disappointed to hear his speech yesterday. Whilst talking about trans rights he told his audience that he wanted a world where "we wake up and Kemi Badenoch doesn't exist anymore. I don't wish ill of her, I just wish her to shut up."

(There's some devious doublespeak here: if you wish someone didn't exist, you obviously wish them ill).

But more importantly, how dare he tell women to shut up about women's rights. Yet again powerful and privileged men tell women what they are and are not allowed to say. They must shut up whilst men speak. Their views are wrong, men are right.

Anyone has the right to believe that the rights of trans people are more important than the rights of women (although I believe this is profoundly wrong). What they do not have the right to do is bully, belittle and threaten women who disagree with them; who are trying to protect their hard fought rights.

I despair.

He went after Kemi and not, for example, JKR or Mara Yamauchi or Sharron Davies. Now why would that be?

Was he supposed to provide a list? It's pretty obvious that he named her because she's a politician in a position to get her voice heard, at least for the moment.

Effiebreast · 26/06/2024 16:19

Even Tom Swarbrick on LBC who’s an ex Cameron SPAD thinks she’s just as bad as Tennant and thinks this is very much an own goal on her part.

Post of the day - you've actually made me laugh out loud, thank you!

You know you're in trouble when the best argument at your fingertips is the opinion of an 'ex-cameron SPAD' on an afternoon radio talk show.

An 'ex-Cameron SPAD'!!! And I love the way you said it, like that makes him a supreme arbiter of morality and political astuteness.

You win the internet for me today @Effiebreast

I don't think it's obvious at all.

I don't know if he was racist but I am a bit surprised at all the people falling over themselves to say he wasn't and it was all because she was in a swiftly diminishing position of power.

You really must love Labour to not blame them for bringing in the worst piece of legislation for some time and to also look
at the mess they’re getting on to with false statements on where men with GRCs can be

Go for it. Big up gender as you will

How many people have a GRC and what evidence is their of them being abused in the way GC people suggest?

Effiebreast · 26/06/2024 16:27

@CantDealwithChristmas Ooh thanks for the patronising. Need to get your coping mechanisms sorted.

EasternStandard · 26/06/2024 16:27

Effiebreast · 26/06/2024 16:23

Better than being a racist eh ?

I think that’s a good question you should ask yourself and others who think her ambition is somehow worse

Kemi is great and she suffers racism from some on the left. Unfortunately

I blame the government who brought this utter shite into schools and who were under the yoke of Stonewall.

Love the GCs scrabbling for a few extra votes. Most folks have made their minds up. Randoms on here won’t change minds with Gotchyas.
Even if the tories do win the next election, I think they’ll be very sadly disappointed with future legislation.

Lmao.

It might not get any better under the Tories, but I sure as shite don't want it to get much worse under Labour.

Starmer, who was more than happy to see Colin Pitchfork released from prison - since we're bringing up irrelevant stories on Badenoch here - actually claimed it was wrong to say only women have a cervix and still only now says 99.9% of women't don't have penises 😂

I will vote for anybody Gender Critical over anybody who isn't.

Gender Ideologues are the Flat Earthers of sociological issues.

Euro24 · 26/06/2024 16:31

I should expand: any man (person with penis and testicles) who espouses the idea that he thinks it's OK to tell women (people that don't have aforementioned penis and testicles) that they should put up with men (other persons with penis and testicles) in spaces specifically designed for them where for one reason or an other they may be particularly vulnerable is a fool and a cunt.

Sorry forgot to say arrogant too.
He loves himself, doesn't he?

Scruffily · 26/06/2024 16:21

Leaving the EHCR, for one. She and her colleagues only want to do this so that they can force through the ridiculous and inhumane Rwanda nonsense. Pushing for us to give up the rights and protections that we put in place under Churchill just to save their worthless political skins is pretty extreme and unpleasant.

Edited

I don't disagree and she's also badly informed as we can't leave the EHCR because it would put the UK in breach of the Good Friday agreement. I do wish the Tories and Reform would stop going on about it.

But just because you disagree with someone on one thing doesn't mean that you disagree with them on everything. Equally I think most Libdem policies are pretty sensible, but disagree with them on single sex spaces (and building new towns).

There's a lack of nuance in a lot of peoples' thinking.

And calling David T the c word just brings that poster down to his misogynistic level. I hate that word and I wish MN would ban it.

The most vehement misogynistic TRAs are always the ones who have trans’d their kids.

How dare they support their child, eh? Conversion "therapy" ahoy! That'll learn 'em.

Oh are you having to devolve to ad hominem now? OK I'll bite.

My coping mechanisms are better than yours since you've been flailing around this entire thread trying a multitude of different tactics and arguments by which David Tennant's disgusting, violent comments can be excused. Unfortunately none of your ideas quite panned out but I simply wanted to thank you for the ex cameron spad one because it really was chef's kiss and gave me a laugh.

I've lived 31 years on this planet.

It can absolutely get worse.

And it will.

I grew up as a tomboy and I will not see my daughter share her right to single sex spaces and representation with her privileged male counterparts.

If we can't even define what a woman is, good luck defending not just any other women;s rights, but rights elsewhere.

Its absolute madness.

Yes it’s the flailing round with baseless attacks from that poster.

ilovesushi · 26/06/2024 16:38

White man telling a black woman to shut up. He should hang his head in shame.

Effiebreast · 26/06/2024 16:38

@SpudleyLass I’m 58 and live in a northern shithole that’s got worse over the last 14 or so years of Tory government. Lived under Thatcher and Blair too.
I care about women and girls as much as anyone but this shower of shit are beyond contempt so spare me the ‘Tories care about women’ rubbish. Look up KBs association with the US Heritage group. Nicely homophobic, should fit in well with her other views.

Butchyrestingface · 26/06/2024 16:40

He thinks she should shut up (or not exist) because of her views on a particular subject.

I don't think its unreasonable to extrapolate from that, that he thinks all women who share similar views on that subject should likewise shut up.

Nobody really cares much about this issue outside Mumsnet, which is why the Tory party aren't all over it. If anything, it's working against them as it looks like a very niche wedge issue and suggests they're ignoring the bigger picture re the massive slide in living standards. It doesn't come up as an issue on the doorstep for canvassers.

You might be right but I have a feeling lots and lots of people care about this issue, it’s a big story on X and it’s a big story in the Guardian, a lot of chat about it on the Reddit groups I’m in (not gender related groups). The tories are pretty much all over it, lots of people giving their opinion from the Tory camp, it’s a sort of no brainier for them. I agree it feels niche, because there are so few trans people in reality, and in a way it is, but unfortunately for them this has become an issue reaching far beyond their needs as a minority group. It’s widely accepted that one of the reasons Nicola Sturgeon stepped down as FM was because of events around the gender recognition bill. The Cass review will have tipped even more people into “not quite sure” camp. I’m sure it’s not one of the major issues on the doorstep, the economy is hell for so many right now, but for the people it matters to, they do really care about it and they might be tempted to vote tories rather than Lib Dems into the opposition benches.

I've long accepted that Labour are going to win.

Good luck, is all I can say.

Starmer the kind of PM who thinks a double killer of teen girls is allowed to be paroled despite being young enough to still kill quite easily.

bluebeck · 26/06/2024 13:37

So he didn’t say “women” should shut up.

Just one specific woman.

Still not acceptable, but factually correct.
Meaning was klaxon loud and clear tho'

Dissidents in the ranks?

No because, see, we GC, WC women of colour don't employ an ideological whip on each other. We have a multiplicity of opinions. Thus we don't think in terms of 'dissidents' like Stalin era Russia or Mao-ist China.

Does the report refer to all gay men?

It encompassed the UK only and appeared in about 2022 I think.

So absolutely no evidence to back up your claims?

Eyes = observation = empirical evidence. Likewise, not many working class peoplpe get invited to celebrity back slapping shindigs sponsored by the money laundering, modern slavery excusing HSBC, as this one was. So that's pattern recognition = empirical evidence. I know there's a school of thought in marxist and marxist-progressive circles that empiricism is a tool of imperialist capitalist supremacy and we should ignore observation in favour of whatever Ta-Nehisi Coates has told us to think that week, but personally I prefer the real world.

Tennant doesn't come from a privileged background.

Hmmmm cos his Wikipedia page has his dad as a minister (social capital) and himself as a grammar school attendee which makes him solidly lower to middle middle class especially in presbyterian scotland, and then he went into acting and became rich, and is now, undeniably, posh and privileged.

Well since this is the braying Kimi fanclub, I assumed you agreed with some of her more controversial views.

Tut tut. I was talking about the UK. We're a diverse society. Did the report include men from traditionally marginalised backgrounds?

Are church ministers well paid? Did Tennant go to a public school? Are the children of ministers 'posh'?

Kimi comes from a background more 'posh' and privileged than Tennant. She arguably holds more power and certainly wouldn't see herself as any kind of powerless victim.
