How do you live? Ie how big is your home and what’s your set up?

how much do you earn gross and net monthly?

i know it’s super invasive but we’re all friends/ anonymous strangers here. My reason for asking was the fact I was absolutely slaughtered by some poster about my tiny tiddly 4 bed home by some posters on my other thread, so I’m genuinely wondering if I’m delulu for considering a 3rd

I don't have 3. I have 2.

Reasons why:

Not enough time
Not enough money
If I had to go through birth again, my uterus would leap out of my body and cheerily bid me goodbye.

your phrasing of the last point made me chuckle (hopefully Not a medical condition because then I’ll feel terrible for chuckling)

No, not a medical condition 😊😂

Belfastchild74 · 23/06/2024 17:49

I have 3. We live in a 3 bed with converted attic room.
We earn well, 2 x almost 6 fig incomes, but we live in an expensive area and won't trade up unless its to a 5 bed detached. Which won't happen.
We love the area and won't compromise on it.
So we make do.

Hermanfromguesswho · 23/06/2024 17:51

I have 3.
4 bed house. We all have a bedroom each 😂
Singke parent earning around 30k a year topped up with child maintenance and universal credit

Almostwelsh · 23/06/2024 17:52

I have 3. I bought a 3 bedroom semi and then built another 2 bedrooms over the garage. All 3 kids now have a double bedroom each, but we still only have one bathroom, due to awkward plumbing.

Net household income about 3k a month.

Genuinelyenquiring · 23/06/2024 17:53

I have 3. 3 bed house and the older 2 share a room very happily. DH earns a good 6 figure salary and I work 2 days a week as a teacher. We're comfortable but eventually will move out of London and buy somewhere bigger. 3 is great by the way - I absolutely love it.

loudbatperson · 23/06/2024 17:54

We have 3, living in a 4 bed semi (3 doubles one small double). Before the youngest were born we had a three bed terrace, but moved when the youngest guest was about 18 months as needed to move her into her own room, and sharing with her older sister wouldn't work due to the older one having autism.

There was a gap of 7 years between my youngest and middle, with only a gap of just over a year between middle and oldest. The elder two are adults now and my youngest just finishing GCSEs.

Space wise my eldest, boy, has the small double as he has less "stuff" and doesn't really mind.

I have a home office in an outbuilding in the garden, which is a godsend as we have become a fully remote WFH company. Converting the building cost a bit however I hate having my work in my home, and we didn't have space for an office inside, so when the office closed it was an easy decision.

I don't really want to give full income details, but I pay the higher rate of tax and lose a small amount of personal allowance. My husband earns a lot less, not much above NMW, and only works part time. However his money is really just for his fun spends. Our mortgage is also pretty low for where we live.

We are pretty comfy now but we didn't always earn as much. When the children were younger I was earning less than half what I do now. However it was enough to meet the bills and have a few treats without needing our income to be topped up, so my husband was a stay at home dad. That saved us needing to spend on childcare. If I hadn't earned enough to cover all our costs, we probably wouldn't have had a third as the childcare bills would have been crippling.

HateThese4Leggedbeasts · 23/06/2024 17:55

I have 3 and live in a 4 bed house but dh and I both wfh so 1 room is needed as a home office. As dc get older they are finding it harder to share a bedroom though. ( Dc1 and 2 shared for a while and now dc2 and 3 share. dc2 now wants her own space). By the time dc2 starts secondary we will need to have found a solution.

RocketPanda · 23/06/2024 17:55

I have four dc and I live in a big old house. We currently use five rooms as bedrooms. There's 3 reception rooms two office type rooms a food storage room a kitchen a dining room two bedrooms and a shower room downstairs and upstairs is two bedrooms and a big bathroom. It was originally just the downstairs and then we added on the kitchen and upstairs rooms.

LiterallyOnFire · 23/06/2024 17:56

Smallish 4/5 bed house, using one room as a home office.

Joint income mostly self-employed so varies but around 100k£ pa. For years it was closer to £60k pa joint, though.

It's fine, but we did have a very large gap between the first two and the third.

Xyz1234567 · 23/06/2024 17:57

3 kids in a large 4 bedroom house. I didn't find going from 2 to 3 made much difference work or money wise. I think going from 3 to 4 is where it gets pricey because you have to buy a bigger car and ideally a 5 bedroom house!

RocketPanda · 23/06/2024 17:57

*There's 3 reception rooms

I should add the dc are a teen and adults.

FuzzyStripes · 23/06/2024 17:58

I have three close in age and they get on very well). We have a four bed detached house but it’s quite a reasonable size as it also has two offices (we both often wfh). They can play in the garden and we also have an all weather summer house for them to escape to with their friends.

It’s not really down to your salary but your disposable income. Children have SEN so I now work part time to accommodate their needs being met. I do get an extra £200 per week DLA to help with this though.

It really is an endless juggle with school times, activities and clubs. That’s before helping with homework and various appointments.

Numbersarefun · 23/06/2024 17:58

We have 3. A 3 bedroomed house, so 2 always shared (who, used to vary). It was fine. Net income was probably just over 100,000. We were always broke as they went to private school (paid from our income) for secondary and then uni. All in their 20s now and seem ok!!!! It helped that my husband’s job was flexible and he could work from home if necessary. I was a teacher so we didn’t need child care for the holidays. We have 2 girls and a boy. (GBG)

Justwingingit2005 · 23/06/2024 17:58

Three dcs.
Large 3 bed house. 3 double size bedrooms.
Younger two share.
We have a low mortgage. I would like to move to a 4 bed but honestly nothing I've viewed has made me want to double my mortgage payments.
We prefer a nicer lifestyle.
Kids won't remember how big their house was but will remember travelling and seeing the world.

Hippee · 23/06/2024 17:58

I had an unexpected third child, who I would not be without, but it does make life more complicated. Holidays are the main thing. Once they are past the travel cot stage you can't usually get a family room in a hotel. It's either cottages, camping or youth hostels for us. You probably need a seven seater car - otherwise you can only manage your family and no friends/grandparents. We have 5 bedrooms, so we can have family to stay. My husband earns about £60,000 a year. I was a SAHM and then worked part-time until my youngest went to secondary school. I now work school hours and earn £20,000 a year. We are comfortable. Dreading the university years though.

WhyamInotvomiting · 23/06/2024 17:58

We are expecting our third. Our gross annual salary is about £50k. We both work PT. We live in a decently sized 3 bed terrace however the 2nd and 3rd bedrooms are both not big as it's originally a 2 bed terrace with the upstairs chopped up by a previous owner. Two of our kids will therefore share bedrooms eventually. This will be our eldest 2 to start with and then whichever are the same sex as the youngest reaches the age of say 3 or so.

Samsungfan · 23/06/2024 17:59

2 kids and me
3 bed with 2 en suit
Earn around 45-50k a year

ClassicBBQ · 23/06/2024 18:00

3 kids
3 bed terrace, although it's a large Victorian. Has a bigger square footage than the 4 bed new builds around here.
2 DSs share, DD has the smallest room.
Combined income gross £60,000 per year.
It's getting harder now the DCs are getting older. When they were tiny we actually lived in a 2 bed flat and that was easier. But now they want their own space when they have their friends round and we have to try and fit desks for homework, bikes, surf boards etc... We plan to move to a 5 bed within the next 2 years because it's only going to get harder!

blarneebeekeeper · 23/06/2024 18:00

I have 3 in a 3 bed house, though they are older now. My boys shared and my daughter had the smallest room. My boys now refuse to share (19&17) so the 17 year old has a day bed downstairs in what was our dining room. Which ever son moves out first, the other gets the bedroom. Its not ideal, but everyone is happy with the set up currently and has their own space.

SleepingStandingUp · 23/06/2024 18:02

So you'll never afford a 5 bed but refuse to move to a larger house you can afford because you'll never afford a 5 bed?

Barrenfieldoffucks · 23/06/2024 18:02

3 kids, 2 adults.

4 bed home.

We run a business from home so have an office downstairs.

Our mortgage is about £650, we earn around £3k between us cause we are keeping more money in the business.

2 kids are secondary age, one with an expensive hobby. Other child is primary and quite cheap to run so far!

emsyj37 · 23/06/2024 18:02

I have 3. Our house is a good size, 5 bed approx 2500 square feet. We have prioritised having this house over other things and we have shit cars, cheap holidays and we need a new kitchen and a lot of decorative jobs doing that will take us a while to get around to. 160k gross, about 8.5k net but my pension contributions are high and I still get max amount of childcare vouchers.
Before this we lived in a 1930s semi with a loft conversion and tiny garden. I am glad we moved, even though we would now be mortgage free with plenty of disposable income if we had stayed put. It is worth it to us, we enjoy having plenty of space - but we know many families with 3 kids doing just fine in much smaller houses. We realise it is a luxury for us to have a big house.
