To ask if you’ve got 3 kids?

How do you live? Ie how big is your home and what’s your set up?

how much do you earn gross and net monthly?

i know it’s super invasive but we’re all friends/ anonymous strangers here. My reason for asking was the fact I was absolutely slaughtered by some poster about my tiny tiddly 4 bed home by some posters on my other thread, so I’m genuinely wondering if I’m delulu for considering a 3rd

Have 2. Would love a third, but DH is wisely saying we would be exhausted/ financially stretched due to childcare costs.

Technically have a 6-bed. Though two rooms are home offices/ not big/ sensible layout. So we have the room. Age is against me though!

So you'll never afford a 5 bed but refuse to move to a larger house you can afford because you'll never afford a 5 bed?

No. We might afford a 5 bed, but they are not often on the market and tbh, we're not moving to something a little better, we're happy enough here, until or unless the ideal comes up.

LosGibertyisacelebration · 23/06/2024 18:36

We have 5 and a 5 bedroom house. At the moment our 3 youngest share a room because that's what they wanted when we moved here, but my middle one wants a single room now so we're in the process of changing the playroom into a bedroom for her. We do have two full bathrooms and that was the one thing I wouldn't compromise on when buying this time, two toilets, two showers/baths are essential. We are on a combined £60k-ish and live in a fairly cheap area.

@Coconutsandpalmtree I know its not easy . But please try not to let certain posters get to you. I think they often do it on purpose. Just take away whats helpful to you.

KevinDeBrioche · 23/06/2024 18:36

It’s not just housing and income, it’s the jump to bigger car / extra bed, seat, flight, visa on every holiday / extra teen to pay for phone, trips , clubs, clothes, trainers / another one to get through university (yes, parents are expected to contribute and no you can’t do it on loans and £10 a month anymore)

we have two teens and two adults in a five bed house. One bedroom is a study and we all have our own room (DH and I work totally different hours so this is necessary for everyone to get enough sleep).

Income £130k ish, housing costs around £450. / month. We are comfortable but I am so SO glad we stuck at two.

FluffyJellyCat · 23/06/2024 18:37

Five bed
Four kids

35 gross family income

Had a well paid corporate job in a past life, bought a house, extended it and no pressing need to go vack to work right now. Extremely lucky to buy a house just before the prices rocketed. Was very risky move that paid off. Could not have done it today

MistyHedgehog · 23/06/2024 18:38

To be fair OP, the issue wasn’t that the house you were looking at only has 3 rooms plus a study. It was that the rooms in that house were tiny, as most new builds are these days.

Topofthemountain · 23/06/2024 18:39

3 children. 3 bed larger detached, the eldest sleeps downstairs in the garage conversion.

Income £37k p.a. currently topped up with UC, CB and we get DLA for ds (but currently going through PIP assessment)

Mortgage £240 a month. We are old, bought before the boom in a cheap part of the NE. Our first house was also a 3 bed detached but it doubled in value in the 16 years we were there.

Hi, If you are the one that posted about the taylor wimpey monkford(?) house then I just wanted to let you know that my house is the same size with a different layout downstairs. Reading the comments upset me as to my mind my house is plenty big enough for us, including my three children.

We earn approx 75k combined so not ludicrous money and thus is the biggest house we could possibly afford in south east England. The biggest issue with three kids is the car! I had to upgrade mine to a 7 seater to fit three carseats in the back.

I think when we got it had a different name but I feel like they recycle the same shape up and down the country and give it a different name ending in ford or down 😅 but yeah that’s me!
(Can I ask how do you manage?, do you have your lounge in front and a kitchen diner out back with the cupboard as a utility?)

honestly posters were viscous. Talking about how low my budget was! Wouldn’t mind but these houses when sold go like hot cakes and are about £400k. We don’t live down south either.

we already have an xc90 which is good, the middle can take a seat but no support leg so, not ideal but we can make do!

OP posts:
Hankunamatata · 23/06/2024 18:49

Surely what you own is relative to the area you live in. A 3 bed house on south east is going to be way more expensive than 3 bed in NI for example

It’s not a house I was looking at, people seem unable to read, I’ve lived there for 6 years.

it’s not a 3 bed either it’s 4. I was told the rooms very tiny and the garden minuscule, only one of a decent size, which is fucking barmy as to my knowledge none of you have been to my house and I said the garden is smaller compared to older houses.

2 rooms are doubled and 2 are singles(that in the pic they put a double in the larger one, which you could esp if you got rid of the double wardrobe built in) but the comments that the kitchen is tiny and lounge small, are kind of nuts too, the minimum dimensions are listed on the side it’s not a palace but the comments very particularly nasty

We are looking for a new car to fit 3 teens into that's doesn't cost a fortune

TheSerenePinkOrca · 23/06/2024 18:53

I have 3 but only because the second baby ended up being twins.

It's important kids have their own personal space so I wanted them to have their own bedrooms. I'm a teacher and most kids I know hate sharing so I'd avoid it if possible.

The hardest thing about having 3 is spending quality time with each one and juggling activities for them. Not to mention the lack of space in the car when we go away! And the cost of holidays and needing an additional room!

Scottishgirl85 · 23/06/2024 18:54

3 kids. 5/6 bed home and approx £270k household income. We live very comfortably in the SE. You don't need as much finances, especially if further north, but I think space in the home is really important for larger families, to keep everyone's sanity!

Teens I think is a bit easier as they don’t need car seats, what about a kodiaq?

OP posts:
Hotspottt · 23/06/2024 18:56

3 children , all same sex. 3 bedroom house, two youngest share who are close in age, eldest has own room. All bedrooms are tiny, as is the house itself but huge garden. We manage just fine, 45k between us but appreciate we have cheap rent and we live in a cheap not the nicest area so outgoings are low. We afford holidays and don’t go without.

See thought teens would be easier but it's like all out wrestling ring as 'his leg is touching my leg' is still a thing 😂

fuckthetories2 · 23/06/2024 18:29

I have four, two of each sex, second two twins. Four bed, two bath, two older have their own room, second set share. An age gap so by the time eldest hits uni age, younger two will be year three... I think. Just me, 30K a year, north of England so doable. After my eldest moves out my younger two will get their own room. When I was a kid, four kids in a four bed house, I was the youngest so I was the last to get my own room 😂 it just works

Following your latest comments OP, I did need a bigger car, got an 8 seater so have plenty of boot room... bugger to park though 🙈 Loads of room for the four kids and I can put the double pram, set up, without folding in the boot. But house wise it works. Holidays etc are more expensive, but I didn't plan twins, life happens and you adapt

Fml your kitchen is not tiny. People are judt trying to pick at you .

I must apologise though. Because I did misunderstand I thought you was talking about 2 children. But it was 3 . As in there would be 3 if you had another child. So I'm sorry for that.

I grt shit on threads sometimes. I find myself either ignoring what's not helpful to me. Sometimes I may say that's not what i asked .

Just a suggestion for later could you consider a loft conversion?

Coconutsandpalmtree · 23/06/2024 19:04

So we have a small 4 bed and need a wfh space and earn 110k gross, mid 30s maybe get another 15/20k in bonuses (gross) but that other thread made me feel like utter dogshit for contemplating a 3rd.

we can’t afford to move right now, but when rates start to come down more and more, hopefully to that 3% figure then we’ll definitely be in a position to consider a move, esp with the equity in our home

We were told by the developer we can’t convert the loft, something to do with the build. I’m not sure what

OP posts:
Polelpuv · 23/06/2024 19:09

We have 3. Live in a 4 bed (4th bedroom is loft conversion). Twins share a room, youngest has their own room, 4th bedroom is spare room/ office. I work part time, dh full time but both in very flexible jobs so share school run, kids in after school club 2 days a week.

Mumsnet acts like having 3 kids is the most crazy/ outrageous thing, everyone must conform and stop at 2. So I wouldn’t worry too much about what someone was saying on here. I personally love having 3!

Dontevenlookatme · 23/06/2024 19:10

I have 3, all now adults. No regrets but cannot deny it was a struggle. Our income wouldn’t be helpful as it was a different time and a different economy but I don’t quite know how we did it.

Someone once said to me that going from one to two children was just more of the same, but two to three was like going from two to ten. So true! Everything needs upscaling, from house, to car, to holidays (no family of four deals). We moved from a three bed Victorian terrace in London to a six bed in the wilds. If we’d stayed in London our separate dining room would have eventually become a bedroom.

The costs aren’t just day to day but long term. You’ll need to think how you’ll afford to support all of them through university, getting married, buying their first home. I know not everyone does this and times have changed, but in our experience and social circle it was the norm.

I'm in a new build to. They do not look as will built as old build I wounder if that's why.

If you decide to have another baby. You will be ok . You will make it work. 💐
