I'm the same height and weight and I'm definitely overweight, I don't look it in the face or arms, I'm carrying it all in my stomach and arse

But you may have more muscle than me and not have excess belly fat like me?

My favourite weight is between 8.5-9 stone

Yes, me too. That's also my favourite weight.
However, I think I also look fine up to about 9stone 6lbs.
I carry weight on my stomach but also it's very visible on my face - so we differ in that regard!
No muscle mass at all.

I’m an inch shorter and weigh virtually the same and have NEVER thought of myself as being fat. It is the heaviest I’ve ever been, I’m 57 and on HRT. I was heavier at the start of menopause but following the fasting regime of eating which suits my needs.

In 1995 after my daughter was born I eventually got my weight back down to pre pregnancy, which was 9 stone 5 lbs. Judging by what some have said I appear to have been overweight most of my adult life, news to me 😲

Also, the army no longer uses BMI as a guide anymore, there’s too many variables, muscle weighs more than fat etc.

You sound fine to me, crack on and get the bikini out. Although I did purchase a Tankini last year, don’t know why there’s a lot bigger out there that just don’t care, good for them 😝

Ha, ha, thanks very much for this.
Yes, I might indeed get my bikini - possibly tankini - out next month when I am on hol.
Why not, eh?
Like you say, a lot bigger out there.

Very similar to you OP. I am 5ft 4, age 37 and I am currently 8 stone 9lbs after loosing 2 stone.

This is the lightest I have been for 7 years. I've managed to keep it off for about 10 weeks so far.

Had DD2 about 7 months ago. My average weight before was also 9 stone and 8 stone odd in my 20s.

I don't think you would look fat at that weight, I didn't think I did but I didn't really fit on any of my clothes, especially trousers.

X

Ah, that's an amazing achievement. I bet you feel great!
That has inspired me to keep going with my diet.

I'm exactly the same height and weight and was also around 9 stone before children. I have two children though, the youngest is four (!) and the extra stone I put on is still hanging around 🙁 I feel fat to be honest. I've just joined the gym to try and get back in shape. It's so hard to find the energy between the kids and work etc

Yes, me too.
No baby, no work, honestly think I'd be winning.
But really tricky to eat well I reckon when most food - especially convenience food - in shops is laden with fat and calories.

BMI is based on a 14th century man who was probably around 4 feet tall and malnourished so therefore absolute bollocks 😁. You sound fine OP.

Ha, ha, this is hilarious.
14th century man!
Yep, in that case, I am absolutely fine.

Confused19831983 · 23/06/2024 21:44

@NalafromtheLionKing yeah, it's complicated. I agree, men don't necessarily find skinny women more attractive.
However, women are DEFINITELY held to much higher standards of beauty (and in general) by both genders, regardless.

10 stone at 5 ft 4 sounds like a lovely size and weight @Confused19831983 !

In relation to what is a realistic weight for your lifestyle, I'd say whilst you are actively trying to lose weight focus on identifying low calorie alternatives that you feel you could be happy with long term. If you reset eating and activity habits to something you can continue long term then your weight will naturally align with that.

Three years ago I had shaded over into obese according to BMI and needed to lose at least 10 kg to get within healthy range. I lost 12 kg in 6 months "trying" and a further 6 kg after that just because the way I had learned to eat meant the weight carried on coming off. I now have a way of eating that means my weight will swing back to me having a BMI of about 22 in normal times - on holiday or at Christmas etc it will go up but that's fine because I know the habits that will take those couple of extra kg off again. Veggie options are top for being filling but lower calorie!

I am 47 and have two DC 11 and 14 fwiw.

Wow, that's an amazing achievement.
Really hope I am able to achieve the same.

At my skinniest, I was 10st 5lbs. I was a size 8/10. I went rock climbing and had to use a child's harness. I definitely was not fat. So I think it really must depend on a lot of factors! Why are you worried about it?

I am not massively worried.
Just wondering about people's opinions as I feel as though I am on the cusp of being thought chubby / a bit fat by others.

TheKoalaWhoCould · 23/06/2024 22:09

It varies so wildly it’s impossible to say without looking at you. I’m 5’5, but very hourglass. At 10 stone I’m a small size 8. At 12 stone I’m a 12-14.

FlowerPowerM · 23/06/2024 22:12

I almost could have written this post myself OP. I’m also 5ft 4 and had a baby a few months ago. I’m 10st 3 now, I don’t think I’m slim or fat. I used to be slim and I am working to get back to that.

You’ve had a baby and it takes some time to lose that weight, there’s no rush to do it. You need to fuel yourself in order to look after a little one, you aren’t overweight and like you said slow and steady wins the race. We’re too used to seeing women in the media looking like they were never pregnant a week after giving birth, but this is not the norm for many of us. You’ll get there in the end if that’s what you want.

Zanatdy · 23/06/2024 22:15

I doubt it. I am 5ft 1 and my weights gone up to 9st 9, which puts me into overweight and I definitely feel overweight, and my clothes don’t fit. Started a diet today. I’m pretty good at dieting once my head is in the zone but I find it hard in summer as I’m always meeting friends for food, and I’ve got a bad leg so can’t do the long walks with my walking group. I was 7st 7 in lockdown as I really focussed on calorie counting and exercise, but ideally I’d say my weight is best at 8.5 stone and that’s my plan to get back to that.

You're an inch taller than me and you weigh about 15lbs more than me. It's a little on the chubby side I would say. Your BMI is 24 which is in the upper range of normal. 25 is overweight. 30 is obese.

This is why bmi is so unhelpful. Someone could be super jacked and fit and weigh that. Or they could have no muscle mass to speak of and be carrying a lot of visceral and subcutaneous fat. Yet the BMI calculator will see them as the same.

HulaChick · 23/06/2024 22:27

No!@! You are NOT fat!! I am the same height & weigh 10st 13 atm. Trying to get down to 10st 7 but at 10st 13 I definitely don't like fat and can wear body con & feel good.

You’re telling someone with a normal BMI that they are a little on the chubby side? Mumsnet never fails to astound me. Absolute cesspit.

If you have a giggly belly that hangs over yes and untoned.

Opinionwontchangeluv · 23/06/2024 22:47

Bmi is nonsense. I am 5'5 and weigh between 11/12 stone and my stomach is completely flat, doesn't hang over jeans when I sit down. I'm considered over weight

I bet you’re one of those who “says it how it is” aren’t you?
