Am I fat?

Confused19831983 · 23/06/2024 13:20

Posting here for traffic.

I am 5ft 4inch and I weigh 10stone.

I am 41.

One question.

Am I fat?

Genuinely interested in opinions.

Another day another fat thread.
Yes. You are fat. A drain on the nhs. Should be ashamed of yourself. Clearly stupid/lazy/smelly.
This is what genuine fat people experience.
When people who are either average or just a bit overweight ask for reassurance that they are not fat it feels to me like attention seeking that they aren’t the dreaded f word because clearly this would be terrible and they would then be part of the repulsive underclass so my answer is always Yes. You are huge. Probably need the fire brigade to knock down a wall to get you out of your house which you should then have to pay for because you have brought it all on yourself.
Feel free to slag me off if anyone so desires. I shan’t be reading notifications or responding because fatism is just too boring so crack on.

Thanks very much for the responses so far, it's interesting to hear the differing opinions!

I am white British. Not muscly at all.

Of average fitness.

I had a baby one year ago.

I am carrying excess weight around my stomach (I don't know waist circumference, but will try and find a tape measure).

I am fairly average in terms of build.

Yes, I feel fat.

Probably a size 12.

I struggle to find clothes that flatter.

I am quite top heavy.

I know I have a BMI of 24 so technically not overweight.

Was interested to hear what other people consider "fat".

Partner and relatives tell me I look slim (I don't think they would lie).

I don't feel slim.

BMI is only a rough guide, if you have a small skeleton you can carry a fair bit of fat and be in the ‘healthy’ range. Just after I gave birth I was 10kgs heavier than I was ‘normally’ (which admittedly would be deemed very slim as I am normally very active) and I was still not overweight according to my BMI. I definitely considered myself overweight - i have quite narrow hips and small wrists / ankles etc so probably looked more overweight than someone of a larger build and the same height (at the same weight).

Back21970 · 23/06/2024 14:13

What was your average weight before you were pregnant?

If it was a stone or so less then you are definitely going to feel fat, so it’s all relative I suppose.

At your weight very few folk would say to were fat if you asked

nippyout · 23/06/2024 14:36

No idea - depend on your body composition. An athlete with a really low body fat % could have those stats.

Anyway, assuming you're not an athlete or a very keen exerciser then you still sound fine. Upper end of healthy weight.

Go with how you feel. Do you feel better half a stone lighter?

nippyout · 23/06/2024 14:37

oops. missed your last post somehow.

JeysusH · 23/06/2024 14:43

Yeah, I'd say you're a bit chubby.

Not fat, but slightly overweight.

I'm 5' 8" and just under 10 stone and could probably lose half a stone.

NoNameNoOne · 23/06/2024 14:44

Am same age and height, am currently 8 stone 12, goal is 8 stone 6. I have been on a diet and exercise routine for a month or so and it's coming off sooooooo slowly. Gone are the days off a couple of days meal skipping and instant results!

If the problem is you don't feel slim, perhaps you should try to lose a bit of weight then?

I don't know what you want anyone here to say if the people you know in RL are telling you, you don't look fat and you don't think they're lying.

I mean they can actually SEE you, we can't!

mondaytosunday · 23/06/2024 14:50

My DD is 5'6.5" and a size 10-12. She's fine but wouldn't miss half a stone. Slightly pear shaped.
I think 5'4" and a size 12 is curvy, but as PP have said it all depends on your shape.

GingerPirate · 23/06/2024 14:51

Puh...
Probably a little overweight.
I'm 45, 10st and 5'8" and still not as slim as 20 years ago.
The stones and lbs are confusing to me, though.
I think most of us could lose a couple kgs....
😁

This is encouraging! Do you mind if I ask how much you lost in a month and how you did it?

Confused19831983 · 23/06/2024 15:18

Thanks again everyone for responses.

I was 9stone before my baby.

But since age of thirty fluctuated between 9stone and 10stone 8lbs.

Though was 11st 8lbs after birth so have lost a bit.

In 20s was always 8stone something.

My 20 something self would have been horrified by 10 stone.

But now I am here, yes, I feel fat but it's not as bad as I thought it would be.

I don't feel enormous.

But flabby - certainly.

I don't know really why I am posting. Genuinely interested in others views?

I think to some people I am probs super slim, and to others, beyond chubby.

Maybe I shouldn't obsess over it too much?

Or maybe yes - I am right to be on a diet?

I dunno.

Very much enjoying all the responses.

If you're asking, the answer is probably yes. But of course most people will say you're not, because most people (two-thirds of UK adults) are overweight or obese, and will be jealous of you. They will also say things like "if you lose any weight you will look gaunt" etc etc.

StinkyWizzleteets · 23/06/2024 15:22

You must be like a whale OP. How can you even leave the house looking like that? 🙄

/sarcasm
and please /fishing for compliments
who cares if you’re fat or thin? Be happy. Live well while you still have health and a degree of youth on your side. It can change too quickly and the worrying about being fat will be bottom of the list then. Make it bottom now.

JackieGoodman · 23/06/2024 15:27

You won't be especially "fat" but I wouldn't expect you to be slim either. I'm slim when I'm 10stone at 5ft 6 (size 10-12).
If you'd prefer to be slim then yes diet/exercise. But if you're happy to be medium then you aren't overweight and there is nothing wrong with your size.

Universalsnail · 23/06/2024 15:29

No this is a healthy bmi.

If you feel fat your probably just not very toned so you feel flabby. Not fat though.

I definitely think about it / worry about it too much.
I try to keep it in proportion but I find it difficult.
I think I grew up in an era that placed a lot of importance on size and looks.

I do wonder if part of the reason I only feel a bit chubby / am told I am slim is because most people are overweight or obese.
I think it's something like 70 odd per cent?
So I am slim by comparison?
I think it's difficult to stay slim in todays world.
No judgement of people who aren't.

I am almost exactly the same as you - an inch taller but also a few pounds heavier. I think I am neither thin nor fat. I’ve lost almost a stone in the last 6 months so definitely thinner than I was, but when I’m with actually thin people, I can see I’m not thin. I also love food though so there’s only so much I’m willing to sacrifice. I work hard to stay within my healthy weight range and not willing to get much thinner than that!

Yes, I love my wine and nice meals out!
I want to try and get down to 9stone but just not sure if it is a sustainable weight given my lifestyle.

You're an inch taller than me and you weigh about 15lbs more than me. It's a little on the chubby side I would say. Your BMI is 24 which is in the upper range of normal. 25 is overweight. 30 is obese.

If her BMI is in normal range you can’t say that’s “chubby” 🙄

No, people will say she’s not because her BMI is NORMAL 🤷🏼‍♀️

Exactly. Some really moronic responses on here. And OP…you know FULL WELL you are not fat with that BMI & clothes size. Why do you need strangers on the internet to reassure you?
