Am I fat?

Confused19831983 · 23/06/2024 13:20

Posting here for traffic.

I am 5ft 4inch and I weigh 10stone.

I am 41.

One question.

Am I fat?

Genuinely interested in opinions.

A size 12 isn’t fat.

perhaps you feel self conscious about your body as you sound like you are perhaps a bit unfit? Coupled with post baby body, everything does tend to feel more jiggly. Maybe find an exercise that makes you feel really empowered and good about yourself for toning and self confidence?

sincerely, a 22 stone woman

ps: am I fat?

shearwater2 · 23/06/2024 16:18

I was that height and weight aged 14 and a size 10-12 in clothes (in 1989). I didn't look fat. Glad the internet didn't exist then or I might have read something like this and thought I was fat.

Hellogoodbyehello4321 · 23/06/2024 16:18

If you are within BMI limit and a size 12 then no you are not fat. However you may not look the best you could, you may look better being 10 lbs lighter or whatever but you are not overweight with a BMI of 24.

Some ppl at 5 ft 4 look amazing at 10 stone, size 12 and some look less amazing as pp have said it will depend on build, where you carry weight etc

If you don't feel toned or fit I'd work on that but don't be thinking you are fat. I'd say a size 12 at age 41 you probably look pretty good.

xTheLoudLeaderx · 23/06/2024 16:19

Oh my god, yesterday a guy in the street who had been drinking all day call me “A big turkey” !! I was also eating out (in a weatherspoond) and a guy walking past said “Christ those are big” on about my boobs !

I dont know what was in the water yesterday !

Im 5”2 and 11 stone, I was struggling also to find clothes that look good, I’ve ate and drank the same as my partner neatly all year and I feel like everything’s hit me at once !!

I would say 5”4 and 10 stone isn’t fat.

I do wonder if part of the reason I only feel a bit chubby / am told I am slim is because most people are overweight or obese.
I think it's something like 70 odd per cent?
So I am slim by comparison?
I think it's difficult to stay slim in todays world.
No judgement of people who aren't.

Certainly if you compare yourself to others you probably feel fine but comparisons only matter to how you feel, they won’t prevent the extra stress on your body from carrying unnecessary fat. It gets harder to stay slim as you get older because you lose muscle mass. I would nip it in the bud and lose the weight for the sake of your health (not for the sake of how you look)

Howbizarre22 · 23/06/2024 16:11

If her BMI is in normal range you can’t say that’s “chubby” 🙄

I said 'in the upper range of normal'. 25 is overweight. 30 is obese. 24 is one under 25, as in one point under being overweight. My BMI is 21.4, which is right in the middle of the range of what is considered a normal, healthy BMI for a woman my age and height. 'Chubby' isn't a dirty word. The Body Mass Index is a guideline anyway. My DH was really chubby, bordering on clinically obese. He's lost 55lbs recently because he hated how big he was. He now has a lot more energy and feels much better within himself.

FinallyHere · 23/06/2024 16:23

I'm 5ft 3inches, ten stone two was the point at which I stopped being able to 'get away with' a few pounds and (eventually) had to accept I could do with loosing some weight.

shearwater2 · 23/06/2024 16:24

When I compare myself to other women, and an awful lot of men as well, my actual knee bones/kneecap is bigger than their entire knee, flesh and all. I was not put on this earth to have skinny legs. That was confirmed when I went down to BMI 19 in my 20s and still had scrum half legs. That said, I am much slimmer in the middle than most other women, and far more muscular and toned.

Killingoffmyflowersonebyone · 23/06/2024 16:33

Sigh.

I'm 5,4 and 75KG. But I do 2-3 hours exercise (vigorous) a day. So, I weigh more than a stone more than you but I'm (probably) healthier though. Weight really doesn't mean much less you are clinically obese IMO.

If you're worried, then take action. Mumsnet can't help...as it's impossible for anyone to tell without knowing how active you are, what sort of lifestyle you lead, any health issues etc etc.

Depends on height to be fair. My 4’9 grandma compared to my 5’11 friend!

SouthEastCoast · 23/06/2024 13:40

I’m 5.4 as soon as I go over 60 kg or so I look beyond chubby at 10 stone I would consider myself fat but you’re probably not technically overweight.
we are all differently built though.

Me too. Currently sitting at 60kg after holiday and need to lose at least 4lbs for my jeans to be comfortable (currently quite tight) i’ve been big & over weight in the past & at 10 stone i wouldn’t say i was fat but i wouldn’t be happy or comfortable personally as it’s a stone over where i’m most comfortable / easy to maintain (8lbs 12-9 stone normally but have ate and drank loads past few weeks!)

i’m 40 & 5”4

Chickenuggetsticks · 23/06/2024 16:51

Check your waist to height ratio. If you are in a healthy BMI and your ratio is good then you are probably fine.

Works the other way too, DH at the bottom end of his BMI looks skeletal. He genuinely has massive bones, really wide shoulders big knees bones etc. everything is just stretched out on a big frame. OP could be like that.

BlackStrayCat · 23/06/2024 17:23

Certainly not slim and not fat either.

Personally, from what you have said, you would be happier if you lost half a stone, is my guess.

kitsuneghost · 23/06/2024 17:28

Chubby

I'm 5 foot 3 and 10st 3lbs. I'm fat although I'm in a 10. I'm trying to lose weight but it's hard work.

A bad strain of Dick-headitis by the sounds of it! Some men think it’s ok to pass derogatory comments to women-hope you gave it back

Same! I need to be 9.5 stone to look not chubby.

Ruthietuthie · 23/06/2024 17:49

It depends.
I am the same height as you. On the day I got married, after months of exercising with a trainer, I weighed 10 stone. I was in incredible shape, very fit, and a size 8 or 10.
I have broad shoulders and am muscular, but not "big" in any way. No-one would have said I was overweight. That said, people were frequently surprised that I weighed what I did.
How do you look? What dress size are you?

Allschoolsareartschools · 23/06/2024 17:53

Well yes you might be, compared to what you were.
But if you're going to consistently strive to weigh the same as you did pre baby & in your 20s, then you're in for a rough ride through life.

Confused19831983 · 23/06/2024 15:13

This is encouraging! Do you mind if I ask how much you lost in a month and how you did it?

I have been doing 1500 cal a day, at least 10,000 steps and 3 work puts a week. So far lost 5lbs. Slow and steady though right? X

I am a size 12.
My sister has a slightly bigger frame than me (also 5ft 4inch) and I remember being amazed at how great she looked at 10st 7lbs.
I probs am quite naturally slight and I am not very active at the moment, which won't be helping.

Yeah, you may have a point.

You are not fat. You may be a bit bigger than you would like, which is not the same thing.
