We need the security services to shut the group down when they are carrying out what can be described as terrorist methods to influence govt policy.

I think there is a difference between terrorism that seeks to kill and terrifying, and vandalism, no matter how high profile the target.

But also think that Just Stop Oil are doing so much damage to the cause they claim to care about. There has been a really good consensus across society of the need to move away from oil and gas and to net zero. There's enormous progress been made already, as well as lots still to do. But in this election for the first time in 30 years we're seeing a new political party emerge with very clear climate denialism and opposition to net zero. They won't win, but by stealing votes from the Tories they'll tempt them to go the same way to win them back. I hold Just Stop Oil at least in part responsible for turning people away from environmentalism and fuelling this really damaging reactionary movement.

I think some people don’t understand what ecocide is

How does throwing orange powder on Stonehenge improve/stop/alleviate/help find a solution to this 'ecocide' ?

Pippippip2024 · 19/06/2024 20:11

Won’t it all just wash off when it rains though?

How do they know, in nature orange colour comes from carrots and oranges (strangely enough) have they tested the colouring against that type of stone? What if the rain that next falls is slightly acid?

it was bad enough when they were stopping sick babies getting to hospital. Blocking the road with a boat...tower by a range rover. What pathetic twats

“Terrorism” ?? please.

If that’s terrorism then what was this ?

Deepwater Horizon

Oil extraction is responsible for ecosystem collapse, mass extinction of species, and dangerous changes to our climate.

And people are upset about the cornstarch based paint on a bit of stone.

And what are you using that enables you to write on this post? Something made with oil derivatives and probably energised by the same?

Soukmyfalafel · 19/06/2024 20:59

They are dicks, but they are not terrorists, not in the way most people view what a terroist is. Unless you can terrorise stones.

How did throwing themselves under a horse, carrying out bombings and arson attacks win women the vote ?

Sometimes it takes more than polite petitions.

TooBigForMyBoots · 19/06/2024 21:01

I'm from NI, they're not terrorists.Hmm YABU @FoxJTT047101111.

Bluevelvetsofa · 19/06/2024 21:01

They might be damaging things, but those things have an impact on people , so it’s disingenuous to say it’s a bit of lichen on stone and doesn’t matter.

Clearly, it’s far more than that. It’s a group of people damaging things that affect other people, just because they can. They’ve had a significant negative impact on people’s lives, by preventing them from going about their daily lives, by ruining art, celebrations and part of the historical fabric of this country and we are all paying for it one way or another.

They should be held to account, but I don’t suppose they will.

BoobyDazzler · 19/06/2024 21:02

Who are “they”?

Londonrach1 · 19/06/2024 21:02

This today lost them their cause!

BoobyDazzler · 19/06/2024 21:02

Who are “they”?

Just Stop Oil. Eco warriors and now everyone is talking about them.

Anyone who’s bothered about this vandalism has no idea the vandalism and destruction fossil fuel driven climate change is doing and will do.

Our governments are ignoring the science because they’re in the pockets of the fossil fuel industry.

So minimal effort then. Nothing positive involving too much effort. Let's go for easy targets, after all Stonehenge has such a large environmental footprint. Attention seeking Idiots.
If you're not helping to find a solution, you're part of the problem.

How is this going to improve the situation?

Dumb argument. Are you saying we can only question ecocide and mass extinction if we first 100% cleanse ourselves of all fossil fuels and derivatives?

I have:

  • Divested my pension
  • Divested my savings
  • Fitted solar and batteries
  • Switched to agile renewables
  • Replaced my diesel with EV
  • Stopped eating beef
  • Cut flights

It’s a good start, there’s lots more to do, I’m working on it !

Viscoelasticity · 19/06/2024 21:09

They’re not terrorists and they’ve damaged nothing. The colour was cornflower and will wash off in the rain.

They are desperately trying to draw attention to the fact we are destroying the world and rendering greater vandalism on the Earth every day!

Getting upset about Stone Henge? How do you think the South Pacific Islanders feel knowing their homes will soon completely disappear forever?

How do you feel about the Arctic disappearing along with its wealth of wildlife going extinct?

How did you feel watching Australia burn? What about famine and drought and woldwide food shortages?

Still bothered by a bit of orange flour on stonehenge? You need to sort your priorities out.

AngeloMysterioso · 19/06/2024 21:11

Oh come on, let’s not play fast and loose with the word terrorists. They didn’t blow anything up or destroy anything, or harm anybody, they chucked some brightly coloured powder at some (yes, I know, very important and sacred) old rocks.

To call it terrorism is to seriously downgrade genuine acts of terror. Nobody is terrorised by these twerps, they’re (mostly) just inconvenienced and pissed off.

Luxell934 · 19/06/2024 21:11

Stonehenge is beautiful and all, but when it’s all under water it will be irrelevant.

That's just conspiracy bollocks. Governments the world over are doing masses to try to combat climate change, as is industry - around half our electricity in the UK is now from renewables. Yes, you can argue that we should go faster. We could make harsher compromises against other agendas (spending money on health, education, defence, etc) But the idea that anyone is going to respond to paint being thrown by thinking "oh, people are really angry, we need to do X differently" is batshit crazy!

And governments of other countries responsible for deforestation, etc are going to stop because vandals throw paint in England???? Why would they?

Gladanotthwrteamonesomething · 19/06/2024 21:11

Vandals and yobs.

Damage to heritage, art, disruption everywhere.

Arrest and lock up.

Basically they are just twats, who on earth supports them.

Luminousalumnus · 19/06/2024 21:12

Allfur · 19/06/2024 20:12

Whilst the world burns, you're worried about a bit of paint on some old rocks, and I love stone henge

No. I'm worried that wankers like these are what people think of when they consider climate change. Have they ever converted anyone to their point of view? They appear stupid, privileged and out of touch. They make it easier for people to dismiss climate change. Are you sure they are not being financed by oil companies?

Takoneko · 19/06/2024 21:12

Non-violent direct action, even when it involves civil disobedience and minor property damage (which this is as it’s reversible) is not terrorism, not even under the UK legal definition, which is broader than in many places.

I personally don’t think it’s an effective strategy and disagree with them but calling it terrorism is not accurate. I can see why posters from NI would object so strongly to that false equivalence.

SerendipityJane · 19/06/2024 21:13

KimberleyClark · 19/06/2024 20:04

Stonehenge really should be off limits for these people. It represents the most remote human past of these islands.

Well, that and Reform

Gakpo · 19/06/2024 21:15

They really are fucking annoying, and I say that as someone who sympathises with a lot of elements of their cause.

That said, I did like the unintended comedy of the recent attack on the Magna Carta (or maybe that was someone else).

UnbelievableLie · 19/06/2024 21:19

They are so good at putting people off their mission, they might as well be on oil companies payroll.......
