We need the security services to shut the group down when they are carrying out what can be described as terrorist methods to influence govt policy.

I do that too.

So you don’t need a car then

How did throwing themselves under a horse, carrying out bombings and arson attacks win women the vote ?

Sometimes it takes more than polite petitions.

Mary Richardson, the suffragette who slashed the Rokeby Venus, went on to become a prominent member of the British Union of Fascists. Some people are just drawn to aggro for the sake of aggro.

Many of the actions of the suffragettes did nothing for their cause. Hunger strikes and forced feeding gained them support but arson and bombings just played into the hands of those who thought women too irrational and governed by emotions to vote. What really won it for women was persistent campaigning, persuasive and logical argument and the First World War.

Just Stop Oil are great at grabbing attention but terrible at winning over the public. All they do is damage their own cause while simultaneously making life harder for everyone else.

It's moving the A303 under part of the site. I didn't say it was going under the stones!

Yes you did. You said "the government approved a plan to build a tunnel under stone henge"

The tunnel is slightly further away from the stones than the current road.

Fireyflies · 19/06/2024 22:40

I don't think drawing parallels with the Suffragettes is helpful tbh. Granting votes to women required one simple act of parliament and was entirely within the gift of the British government. It did just need political will. Finding the technologies, political and economic solutions to move the entire world away from fossil fuels is a million times more complex.

They're building the tunnel under the site. The site is Stone Henge. I didn't say they were building the tunnel under the stones. It's called the Stone Henge World Heritage Site.

Fireyflies · 19/06/2024 22:41

Stone henge is a henge made of stones. The field 400+ meters away from it is not stone henge.

Do you think that having taken a lot of measures already that I haven’t considered it ?

It fails because public transport in my rural village is not fit for purpose. First bus out gets me to work at 10:30am, last back means I would have to leave at 4pm.

I think you have done a great deal to help We have done almost everything on your list Although we had a petrol car rather than a diesel car.
Our first solar panel still heats our water after 25 years. Luckily our back garden faces South do we do generate a lot of electricity in our more modern ones. We have also added battery.
We deliberately chose a home near our places of work. The bus service over the years has dwindled although I can cycle 3 miles to a train station for an hourly local service that connects to a mainline.
My worry about EV is how the minerals are mined and their sustainability. I know that is hypocritical as I have a battery for the panels and phones etc.
Hopefully, everybody can do some of the things your list. For many it maybe that they can't afford and EV or stuck in a flat that has no access to a charging point.
However, I think some of the actions of JSO is alienating a lot of people. You need the people on your side to actually make change.

Why not ?

saoirse31 · 19/06/2024 22:44

Disgusting thing to do.

Hibernating80 · 19/06/2024 22:45

I haven't read the article yet, but I just wonder, out of interest, what are posters doing to help tackle climate change?

Cooper77 · 19/06/2024 22:47

You can make your point without damaging historic buildings or works of art. Those imbeciles who slashed an 18th-century painting should have been sent to prison for five years. A work of art, or a historic building, is irreplaceable. You can’t make a new stone henge, or a new Monet painting. Once it’s gone, it’s gone forever. Why not smash up some rich oil baron’s Mercedes instead?

WhatANiceNewWord · 19/06/2024 22:51

Don't think they exactly induced terror...

Ecosystems are also irreplaceable. When people hear about catastrophic habitat loss they don’t care, don’t listen. Spray cornstarch on a rock and it’s top of the news.

Blackcats7 · 19/06/2024 20:02

Whilst I don’t think their methods are right I don’t agree that they are terrorists. They target things not people.

In the early days of these 'actions ',I recall an ambulance on an emergency call being blocked and these terrorists refusing to let it pass their blockade. Someone very ill was in that ambulance. I'd say that person was targeted by terrorists.
What made it worse was the nauseating self-righteousness they displayed in a TV interview. These morons were loving the attention.o

Harvestfestivalknickers · 19/06/2024 22:55

But does it being top of the news make people think 'stop oil' or does it makes them think 'wankers'?

cupcaske123 · 19/06/2024 22:55

Fireyflies · 19/06/2024 22:41

Stone henge is a henge made of stones. The field 400+ meters away from it is not stone henge.

It's called the Stone Henge World Heritage Site. Planning Inspectorate officials said that the tunnel would cause “permanent, irreversible harm” to the area. Despite that, the government gave it the go ahead. The area is of great archeological significance and shouldn't be touched. That's why the decision was challenged.

1ittlegreen · 19/06/2024 22:56

Whilst I don't disagree with the cause, I'm fuming that they desicrated a religious structure around Litha/Solstice.

Had they done this to a church at Easter, there would have been outcry.

How dare they ruin this sacred place for us? The rain water will never wash off all the orange particles.

Sp I no longer support them. Dickheads.

LimeandCourgette · 19/06/2024 22:56

cupcaske123 · 19/06/2024 20:16

I believe so. It's powder paint.

Several years on and I'm still waiting for the Extinction Rebellion symbols that were sprayed on with paint that will 'just wash off in the rain' to actually wash off.

Harvestfestivalknickers · 19/06/2024 22:55

Well it’s been a conversation starter. It’s making people on this thread and beyond talk about their position on climate change and their views on the protesters.

They used cornflour powder that didn't come of? Well that's a concern.

I think using the word terrorist Is quite frankly hysterical and also an insult to terror victims.

We are all outraged, the ruining of the king portrait and now stone henge along with the many other ridiculous and valdalous crimes committed. Something should be done quite frankly jail time is required to put a stop to this once and for all but please keep things in perspective.

I understand your point but the view of Lord Carlile of Berriew Q.C

"“The use of serious violence against persons or property, or threat to use such violence, to intimidate or coerce a government, the public or any section of the public, in order to promote political, social or ideological objectives.”

https://assets.publishing.service.gov.uk/media/5a7b9cb240f0b62826a04b08/7052.pdf

Violence is only possible against living beings, not objects.

The WHO definition works better;

"Violence is defined by the World Health Organization in the WRVH as “the intentional use of physical force or power, threatened or actual, against oneself, another person, or against a group or community, that either results in or has a high likelihood of resulting in injury, death, psychological harm, maldevelopment or deprivation.

This definition emphasises that a person or group must intend to use force or power against another person or group in order for an act to be classified as violent."

Spraying a stone with dyed cornstarch is hardley serious violence, ergp noy an act of terrorism, not terrorists.
Arseholes yes, terrorists, no

LOL at everyone tutting over disrespecting the witches!

I don't get what's funny about posters bringing up the significance of stone henge to people with different beliefs?
