To not offer two types of beef burger at summer fair (halal and non halal)?

NameChangedJune · 18/06/2024 21:31

In addition a veggie option?

I’ve took responsibility for sorting the burgers for BBQ at summer school PTA fair.
I was thinking, I can buy all burgers as halal only. A good portion of the school population are either non-religious or Muslim.

However, DH is saying we should also offer a non-halal burger option (he is religious - Sikh and avoids halal due to his beliefs). However I think he is a minority and could have veggie? There are Hindus but they wouldn’t eat beef anyway so it’s a tiny amount of people other than DH who I think would care if we go full halal for the burgers.

IMO one type of beef burger that is suitable for most would be easiest. AIBU?

Ah - so you think only white people are English? And Scottish, and Welsh?

@Iamwhoiamwhoareyou

Have you been to Bradford where people of Asian heritage speak English with broad Yorkshire accents.

Or parts of Scotland where people slip seamlessly between English, Hindi and Scots Gaelic?

OneBadKitty · 19/06/2024 16:53

@Iamwhoiamwhoareyou You know that 'English' is not a race don't you? Being born in England makes you English- even if you have ethnic ancestors you can still be English.

Maybe you mean 'white' British rather than English?

Yes

You can't just offer halal meat, it's not suitable for most, many people have a huge problem with it for various reasons. I'm neither Muslim nor a vegetarian and I wouldn't go to a BBQ where veggie or halal meat burgers were the only thing on offer 🤷‍♀️

If most of the market is Muslim, then it would absoluetely be appropriate because that would be what the demand was for.

OP states that there will be a significant number of Muslims present so actually it comes down to the breakdown of who is coming, not the general population.

OneBadKitty · 19/06/2024 16:54

I know Muslim people who consider themselves 'Yorkshire'.

Yes

So the men who are not white representing England in the football team are…. what? Cheating?

FUCKS SAKE.

Its not about flipping identity / ethnicity.

It comes down to how many burgers can I flog to make as much money as possible.

If the people coming are Muslim, then you ARE considering English people's preferences if you decide to cook halal food. Because the people coming to the summer fair ARE English.

You literally are catering for the English.

The number of illiterate racists on this thread, is really rather depressing.

MoMo999 · 19/06/2024 16:45

Agree - doesn't bother me in the slightest either. If I had a party which some of those attending were Muslim (who can indeed be English too), I would have just bought halal meat for everyone. It would never have occurred to me that this was an issue

But it would be an issue if you didn't buy non halal meat i guess?

No, I'm not white British, I am English. White British could refer to any white person who has settled here/has a British passport.

Yes

So what nationality are Shirley Bassey, Lenny Henry, Scary Spice, Romesh Ranganathan, Floella Benjamin, Rishi Sunak etc. etc. ?

Infinity234 · 19/06/2024 17:04

As a vegetarian the mind boggles when people go on about halal meat being cruel 🙄

Also those same people probably get a nice kebab or curry regularly!

From burgers to Shirley Bassey via bolt guns and Turkey. It's a thread that keeps on giving.

Decrement? You can’t even write in proper English!

Or go on holiday and don't even think about it or question it.

If I was inviting some people who were observant Muslims I'd always have a halal option, and if there were some observant Jewish people I'd have a kosher option. Beyond that I've never had a problem at parties, as in private parties my friends tend to eat whatever they are given and I haven't been the one catering at work parties.

At work once some of us really wanted to go to a surf n turf restaurant which didn't have vegan option so the one vegan person amongst us didn't go.

Poor OP - bet she wishes she’d never volunteered for BBQ duty now.

I’ve been on MN a while but hadn’t seen one of the racist/Islamaphobic threads before. Eye opening.

I think they’ve combined detriment and excrement to create an exciting new word.

RedToothBrush · 19/06/2024 17:09

I have to say that I believe that a sizeable percentage of people who refuse to eat halal don't refuse for animal welfare reasons. Its because they don't want to eat it because its muslim food.

I mean look at some of the responses on this thread and comments about english summer fairs and there being no muslims there!

RedToothBrush · 19/06/2024 17:10

And the ignorance about animal welfare standards generally.

VeryStressedMum · 19/06/2024 17:10

mswales · 19/06/2024 15:45

I'm gobsmacked that so many people think they are somehow standing on the side of animal welfare by eating only non-Halal meat. Do people have no idea of the reality of industrial farming? Live animal exports, overcrowding, disease? Do they realise that dairy involves female cows being repeatedly mated with against their will, having their newborn babies taken away (at which they howl for hours), then milked daily by a machine often with infected udders, until they are pregnant yet again? I am not a vegan by the way. But I can see that the dairy industry, and the meat industry, are utterly barbaric. That's before we even get to how they drive climate change. Anyone eating mass-produced meat or dairy (myself included) can make no claim to be on the moral high ground. Stunning of animals in their last moments is almost irrelevant given the utter misery and pain they experience in their lives beforehand.

Yes this! Good post

Agreed, but being white English and white British are not one and the same. I doubt a black person would only describe themselves as black British either, they would likely reference their ethnic/country of origin.
