To not offer two types of beef burger at summer fair (halal and non halal)?

In addition a veggie option?

I’ve took responsibility for sorting the burgers for BBQ at summer school PTA fair.
I was thinking, I can buy all burgers as halal only. A good portion of the school population are either non-religious or Muslim.

However, DH is saying we should also offer a non-halal burger option (he is religious - Sikh and avoids halal due to his beliefs). However I think he is a minority and could have veggie? There are Hindus but they wouldn’t eat beef anyway so it’s a tiny amount of people other than DH who I think would care if we go full halal for the burgers.

IMO one type of beef burger that is suitable for most would be easiest. AIBU?

Lots of people don't want to eat halal.

I had no idea! Good to know.

The Islamophobia in this thread is insane, as quite a few PP have said.

OP, sounds sensible to serve only halal given the demographic.

It’s not Islamophobic to be against the particular type of slaughter used for some or all halal meat.
It is however discriminatory to completely ignore peoples moral beliefs.

Thanks, someone was quoting 85% or 88% last night so must depend on the source. The fact it's not 100% shows how inhumane this procedure is. I'm surprised the UK law allows it not to be 100%.

The source I used was the UK Food Standards Agency

It's not islamophobic for a non muslim not to follow rules related to islam.

Agree@Pinkbits
Im surprised also there is no requirement for the type and method of slaughter to be clearly labelled on all food, including pre prepared and in restaurants.

Very often the animals slaughtered in a halal manner do not get stunned: https://www.instagram.com/reel/C8Xftt1KxkC/?igsh=MXh2aHVoa2F1d2x3bA==
Warning: this is VERY hard to watch!

No, I would not. I have never visited any of those countries.

Then you are seriously missing out - the pyramids in Egypt, trekking through the Sahara desert in Morocco and seeing the amazing ruins at Ephesus in Turkey are some of the best trips I’ve ever experienced. And I’d love the chance to go to the Maldives some day.

tillytown · 19/06/2024 16:36

If you are going to cater for religious beliefs, you should cater for all religious beliefs not just one. And if that is too much hassle for you, then you shouldn't have offered to cater to begin with.

There is nothing Islamophobic about wanting everyone to use the most humane slaughter methods available in 2024.

The animals aren't Muslims and do not choose how they are slaughtered.

Not sarcasm - I had never heard of people who don't want to eat halal. This thread has been eye-opening. So I guess those people would have the same objection to kosher meat?

I sometimes buy it in Sainsburys because weirdly it is sometimes cheaper than non-halal. I've never really thought more about it before.

You realize that many of the English people at this fair are Muslim?

I doubt it - British maybe, but not English.

Just buy one set of the same burgers and on the day split them into two piles of 'Halal' and 'non halal' and just save yourself the hassle.

Totally ignorant comment.

I’m also very very surprised by how many meat eaters are so anti too. It wouldn’t bother me in the slightest.

OneBadKitty · 19/06/2024 16:42

Bet lots of people on this thread go to Indian restaurants and take-aways and eat halal meat.

Yes - there are people born in England who are Muslim. In Scotland and Wales too!!!

Where are you from that this surprises you so much?

Agree - doesn't bother me in the slightest either. If I had a party which some of those attending were Muslim (who can indeed be English too), I would have just bought halal meat for everyone. It would never have occurred to me that this was an issue

Why would they not be English if they were born and live in England? It's possible to be both British and English, or British and Scottish, Welsh or Irish surely?

I cannot speak for others but I don't need kosher or halal (or anything else treated in a special way).
Making halal cheaper is one way to inflate demand for it I suppose.
