To not offer two types of beef burger at summer fair (halal and non halal)?

NameChangedJune · 18/06/2024 21:31

In addition a veggie option?

I’ve took responsibility for sorting the burgers for BBQ at summer school PTA fair.
I was thinking, I can buy all burgers as halal only. A good portion of the school population are either non-religious or Muslim.

However, DH is saying we should also offer a non-halal burger option (he is religious - Sikh and avoids halal due to his beliefs). However I think he is a minority and could have veggie? There are Hindus but they wouldn’t eat beef anyway so it’s a tiny amount of people other than DH who I think would care if we go full halal for the burgers.

IMO one type of beef burger that is suitable for most would be easiest. AIBU?

BTW if you do go with halal don't plaster a great big sign saying halal. Just get a sticker with the logo and put it somewhere obvious.

Those people who want halal will know and understand, and those people who will happily eat a curry and not even think to ask the question, won't even know.

You've informed people, so its up to them to understand. I wouldn't go round trying to inflame it by making a big deal of it.

Columbuscircle · 19/06/2024 11:47

We had our school fayre last weekend. They offered beef burger, halal beef burger, pork sausages and veggie burger. All cooked separately.
Our school lunches have both halal and non halal meat options every day- the school is about a quarter Muslim.
I know people who won’t eat halal meat but wouldn’t want the veggie option either so if you are able to cater for three different lots of people then that would obviously be the best way to go.

YAB massively U.

I do not want to eat halal, and I also don't want to be left with the veggie option either.

I'm already fed up with a lot of places only serving halal chicken, meaning my only option is beef (if I want meat), without it happening to the beef option, too.

Why not do normal non halal beef burgers, halal chicken burgers and a veggie option, or halal beef, normal non halal chicken, and a veggie option? That at least gives meat eaters a non halal option.

Which places only serve halal? If a chain like KFC or Nando's offer halal only, they'll always ensure there is a branch within the near vicinity that serves non-halal. This is because it's too difficult to main halal and non-halal in the same kitchen.

So for example there are two KFCs within 3 miles of me, one is halal, one is not. Same for Nando's.

It's amazing that out of all the thousands of eateries available to you, you are hung up on the tiny percentage of chain branches that cater to Muslims. Count your blessings and think about how much more limited Muslims are.

peachescariad · 19/06/2024 11:52

IMO if you are providing halal burgers, you must let customers know. Halal meat is clearly labelled in Tesco, Sainsburys etc. so customers can make an informed choice.
You state a 'good portion' are muslim....so unless you want to faff with 2 separate grills/utensils etc. I'd do standard burgers and a veggie burger. Or after this thread, you may want to sack off the bbq altogether.

Edited

All the nandos near me are halal only. I have just checked.
I am vegetarian so I do not eat at Nandos ... But sadly non halal chicken doesn't exist around my area. :(

Rescinding Roe v Wade is an attack on the rights of every woman in the USA. As a result many states have introduced draconian measures, including bringing criminal charges against women who miscarry or have still births, and prosecuting the doctors who care for them. Some states are also cracking down on various methods of birth control, including the morning after pill.

So it’s a fair comparison.

No it is whataboutism. I was asked if I would visit a muslim country, I said no. I was asked why. I replied in good faith. Every post to me from countcalculia is whataboutism not a reply to anything I raised. Which is why I would engage that person anymore.

Anyone if free to start a thread about batshittery in the USA f they so choose. I won’t engage in deflections from this conversation, it does not lessen the human rights abuses mentioned in above posts.

eatsleepfarmrepeat · 18/06/2024 21:39

Do you understand what halal entails? Slitting their blood vessels and allowing them
to bleed to death without the stunning. It’s fucking barbaric less humane so YABU to not consider those who put morals above religion.

As I understand it, there is theological debate over stunning the animals. Some halal food is no more or less humane than the rest of the meat industry. However, as you say, there is a risk that the animal hasn't been stunned. I never eat halal as a result, despite not being religious.

I would have veggie though, in the circumstances.

Honestly the best thing is to move to a country where your beliefs and culture are aligned. If not capable and can’t adapt do not demand the whole country changes for you. Live and let live is my motto but the let live is one way here it seems.

I do not expect Muslims countries to adapt to me so I am unlikely to visit those countries that have different customs I am not prepare to follow. If that makes me racist. Well what you think of me is your issue.

Veryoldandtired · 19/06/2024 12:08

Why not serve Halal & veggie? For non halal meat eaters it would virtually taste the same? I often buy halal chicken because of what’s available and can’t tell the difference in taste 🤷🏻‍♀️

It has nothing to do with the taste. If you read the thread then you will see.

I would have non halal and veggie options. I would not buy halal or allow my children to have it.

All animal slaughter involves distress to the animals. none go gleefully skipping onto the killing floor.

Kosher is the meat that is never stunned.

A fair proportion of Halal animals are pre-stunned. Approx 50%

However, cheap non Halal meat has also has welfare issues attached to it -
Cheap meat means corners are cut- the budget supermarkets have chickens with fractures to the wing and thigh bones- literally smashed.

It made me feel ill

{Dog had stomach upset, so bought chicken for her from a budget supermarket- NO LONGER, after seeing the lesser quality of the meat {Filled with water [?] and the fractured bones from rough handling.

Welfare assured meat is the only way to go if you eat meat.

Jaxhog · 19/06/2024 12:13

I don't eat Halal either, but would just eat the Veggie. Why not just have Veggie?

BaselineDrop · 19/06/2024 12:16

We always do halal burgers and veggie burgers.

Nothing to do with taste-

Halal believe that animals should be killed with a surgically sharp blade while a Prayer is said over the animal.

The animal dies from blood loss while still aware.

Pre-stunning is done about 50% of the time, which is obviously much better for the animal.

Kosher meat is never stunned- but is always bled out.

Stunning at slaughter

Nick Marsh takes an impassioned stance on non-stunning at slaughter, insisting that if a total ban is out of the question, labelling on meat declaring it so is a much-needed consolation.

Just buy one set of the same burgers and on the day split them into two piles of 'Halal' and 'non halal' and just save yourself the hassle.

Don’t do this op

As the Vet Times article suggests, Stunned Halal meat should be labelled as ''Stunned'' - then it would be no crueller than non Halal meat.

No one seems to mention Kosher meat, which is never stunned, and always bled out {seems a horrible way to die, for any animal}

I find it so funny and ridiculous that the same idiots that have an issue with halal slaughter, halal meat and Muslims in general are the same idiots that embrace all sorts of degenerate behaviour. It's funny to see these how people with low morals and values draw the line at halal, but not at introducing or serving booze to their own children. For instance. Can't take people like this seriously.

With that said, in order to avoid conflict I would just provide halal, non-halal and vegetarian options.

DonnaBanana · 19/06/2024 12:37

Just buy more of one type of burger and split them up into the different "types" no one will be able to tell if you don't say anything

Grmumpy · 19/06/2024 12:38

I would never knowingly buy halal meat.

Consuming alcohol or letting your children consume alcohol (in a legal way) does not mean you have low morals and values!

(And I say that as someone who is teetotal)

DH & I are the same. We're both white British, get our chicken from Halal store as its not injected with water like supermarket chicken.

IMO Halal is no more brutal than non Halal.

In this event as the majority of attendees are Muslim it would be logical to serve Halal burgers plus vegetarian options.

Waitrose and Tesco welfare assured chickens are definitely not full of water -
Cheap chicken is a shocker- masses of fluid flows out of it, and the wing and thigh bones are often broken from rough handling- it doesn't keep as well, either. {discolouring even in the shop}

Organic and free range chickens are far better tasting and their bones are stronger {probably as they have room to walk about} -

Cheap meats are cheap for a reason...Welfare standards are not as high. More overcrowding. Stress.

OhmygodDont · 19/06/2024 12:41

Quite like the one a pp posted

standard beef burgers, Halal chicken burgers and veggie burgers.

Also covers people who wouldn’t care if it’s halal or not but don’t eat red meat. We Can’t do most veggie burgers due to intolerances.

Tho that still leaves out any Jewish people from eating meat… but covers for Sikhs and those who do just object to the stun/no stun.

If you are going to do all three bases, this is the way to go. No risk of confusion.

Strictlymad · 19/06/2024 12:43

It really is very hard to cater to all, hard enough in a summer bbq for your family let alone a whole school. I assume also resources and funds are limited too so can’t be doing a million choices. I’d be tempted to do one bbq with beef burgers and pork sausages, one with halal beef and lamb and one with a vegan burger, a veggie sausage and maybe some halloumi?
