To not offer two types of beef burger at summer fair (halal and non halal)?

NameChangedJune · 18/06/2024 21:31

In addition a veggie option?

I’ve took responsibility for sorting the burgers for BBQ at summer school PTA fair.
I was thinking, I can buy all burgers as halal only. A good portion of the school population are either non-religious or Muslim.

However, DH is saying we should also offer a non-halal burger option (he is religious - Sikh and avoids halal due to his beliefs). However I think he is a minority and could have veggie? There are Hindus but they wouldn’t eat beef anyway so it’s a tiny amount of people other than DH who I think would care if we go full halal for the burgers.

IMO one type of beef burger that is suitable for most would be easiest. AIBU?

I find it so funny that people try to take a moral high ground over halal. As though the animal killed for their burger was walking happily around a field grazing, instantly died and felt no fear or pain. News flash, your non halal cow was terrified, and had been for hours, watched its friends die, heard them, and may not have even been stunned correctly becuase of how many get slaughtered in one go. She may have been pregnant. She may have been unable to even stand by the time she was finally stunned.

If you are a person that only eats high welfare, humanely dispatched meat, you won't be buying the cheap burgers from OPs stall anyway.

This.

anotherlevel · 19/06/2024 09:07

All you people saying you wouldn't eat halal food because of how they are slaughtered, how do you think non halal meat are killed?

Heronwatcher · 19/06/2024 09:10

I wouldn’t eat a halal burger and I think that lots of my friends feel the same. As others have suggested I’d do veggie and non-halal meat.

Just buy one set of the same burgers and on the day split them into two piles of 'Halal' and 'non halal' and just save yourself the hassle.

Totally unethical and not recommended but I must admit this did make me chuckle!

There are very few Indian restaurants in the UK run by Indians (Hindu or otherwise). Most are actually Pakistani or Bangladeshi - Muslims.

Admittedly I don't know the actual numbers, but our local Indian restaurant is definitely run by owners of Indian origin and isn't halal (also doesn't serve beef which I have always imagined might be related to Hinduism, but could just be culinary tradition).

Tornado70 · 19/06/2024 09:13

What about vegan?

Maddy70 · 19/06/2024 09:15

Halal eaters can eat the veggie. Just do 2

Not all pakistani or Bangladeshis are Muslims. There are parts of the UK with Pakistani Christian populations. Mny moved to Britain to get away from persecution.

I used to frequent a cafe run be Persians, they happily sold and ate bacon.

Good riddance then!

Exactly my feeling, actually, good riddance to illiberal, homophobic, xenophobic, misogynistic, theocracies. There are plenty of liberal democracies for me to visit.

No, thats Kosher, the majority of animals killed in Halal slaughter are stunned, there is zero reason not to stun in Halal, where as Kosher forbids any form of stunning.

This is really interesting as I'd thought it was prohibited as per kosher. Having had a bit of a look it seems that there is some disagreement about it for halal because its a "practice after revealing",so some think stunning is also haram.

Irritating if there's no way of telling by the packaging because it changes my feelings about it quite a bit!

Triestre · 19/06/2024 09:17

‘What about vegan’

This lot took over vegetarian options. Everywhere is now vegan rather than vegetarian. Not eggs or cheese.

The joys of ‘ just a little thing that is going to be inclusive’ I can’t wait to go to non inclusive and be normal. Wherever normal is for me anyway 🤣🤣🤣

Luio · 19/06/2024 09:18

If a large proportion of the school community will only eat halal then the school lunches will all be halal. If it is ok for the children, it should be fine for the parents.

Pompleandprim · 19/06/2024 09:24

Halal and veggie is fine (saying this as someone who doesn’t specifically eat halal meat). You’ve said yourself that majority will prefer halal. Of those who don’t require halal meat, you’ll get some who ask if it’s non-halal and can then decide whether or not to have it, or those who don’t care enough to ask. I suspect the majority of those who don’t require halal won’t be bothered enough to ask.

CracklingLogsGalore · 19/06/2024 09:27

I wouldn’t eat halal because I fundamentally disagree with the way the animals are slaughtered. They can put whatever religious spin on it they want.

Yikes. Isn’t deliberately mislabelling food and selling it to the public illegal? PTAs have directors, whose names and reputations are legally on the line. If a lawsuit ever transpired against the PTA, it’s those volunteer parents listed as directors who are ultimately responsible. This is really reckless behaviour, especially as those directors aren’t even paid—they’re volunteers.

But I presume you're vegan if you have concerns about animal welfare, and in that case, the OP's choice of meat wouldn't affect you?

You won't know most of the time, there's no requirement to label halal meat.

In London loads of schools serve only halal meat, most "chicken shops" use halal chicken, Turkish restaurant?, probably halal. Indian (usually actually Bangaldeshi or Punjabi), very likely to be using halal meat. 80 Nandos branches in UK serve halal.

eatsleepfarmrepeat · 18/06/2024 21:39

Do you understand what halal entails? Slitting their blood vessels and allowing them
to bleed to death without the stunning. It’s fucking barbaric less humane so YABU to not consider those who put morals above religion.

Actually, no it doesn't. Go and google the process.

Jk987 · 19/06/2024 09:41

Don't bother with meat. Do vege all round.

Killingoffmyflowersonebyone · 19/06/2024 09:44

YABU.

If you want to make it inclusive (i.e.Halal so Muslims can eat it) then you're also making it non-inclusive for lots of other religions (as your DH is a prime example of). Or you go full veggie because otherwise regardless of what you do, you'll exclude different groups - so I guess the question is who you care about more.

I wouldn't ever support an action that excluded the vast majority of other regions just to cater for one religion - particularly in the current political climate.

Nesbi · 19/06/2024 09:45

As a non- Muslim meat eater I wouldn’t give a damn if it was Halal, total non issue.

Would feel totally hypocritical given I’ve holidayed in places like Turkey, and Morocco, eaten in countless fast food places over the years and never given a thought about whether the meat they were serving was Halal or not.

It just feels like another opportunity to do some online posturing but I bet a load of the people on here clutching their pearls in horror at the mere thought of it will have eaten plenty of Halal meat without complaint in the past as well.

such is the internet though - wave the flaming torches!!

Keepthosenamesgoing · 19/06/2024 09:46

@FunIsland what a useful article by the Muslim slaughter man. I thought it was well written and really insightful. Thank you

ChurchCats · 19/06/2024 09:47

Offer ordinary and vegetarian burgers.

Anyone who doesn't want to eat the ordinary can have a veggie burger or go hungry.

I would be disgusted if I found I had eaten a halal burger at a school fete.

If I were in Pakistan, I wouldn't be expecting them to provide a non-halal burger for me., which is just as well because I'm perfectly sure that they wouldn't,

Dodappydah · 19/06/2024 09:48

Wrong in so many ways, what is the issue with getting non halal burgers and veggie ones for those who either don't eat meat or who only eat halal? I'm personally fed up with how many meat options are going over to Halal and also sick of how much food at my kids primary school is halal so no it's halal or rolls for some days.

Poltershighclimb99 · 19/06/2024 09:50

Rosscameasdoody · 19/06/2024 09:05

Of course there is !! If l was going to slaughter l’m pretty sure l’d prefer to be stunned before having my throat slit. Halal is cruel and unnecessary. That’s why the disgust.

You may prefer to be stunned first but if you had a choice of not being slaughtered at all I think you’d choose that option wouldn’t you? I mean no matter how you’re killed you’d rather not be surely?
